  1. The author is a Science Fiction writer on SF Author Robert J. Sawyer Looks at 2014 · · Score: 1

and that's how his prediction will remain , mere fiction.

The reason is he has simply not considered the cost of implementing these new technologies.

The author doesnt know how much it costs to lay a mile of tarmac, let alone one embedded with sensors. And normal working/middle class people arent looking for a super duper car with fancy tech but one which doesnt break the bank.

And most of the people i know either use their mobile phones or a £10 alarm clock, not the fancy £59.99 auto light up alarm from Argos.

While new technology is always exciting,it has to climb down a few magnitutes in price before it becomes omnipresent. An example is the microwave oven,it has been around,IIRC,since late sixties. But its only in the last 10 years that it has become ubiquitous.

Most people look for value for money and thats why low fare,no frills airlines are increasingly popular. And thats why people travel in coaches rather than in more comfortable trains.

And since we are making predictions let me make some of my own.

Consider the new Airbus 380.Instead of onboard massage parlours, shops etc,we will have maybe 800 seats stuck together for cheaper London - Sydney flights.

Our entertainment will be more and more online.Cheap(the operative word here is cheap)broadband will see more and more people coming online for their information/fun.TV/Movies/Music just wont be on the air/cable/satellite dish but all over.

I am afraid not.Indian mathematicians were the first to postulate Zero

Infact the first person to discuss this was Brahmagupta

What are commonly known as Arabic numerals were infact Indian Numerals.About 6th century A.D. saw the advent of tradesman in the arab peninsula.Relying on the monsoon winds they would often travel to India, where they found and started using the Indian numeral system.

When the crusades took place ,European scholars came in contact with the numeral system in use by the Arabs. They adopted it ,as it was superior to the Roman System and called it Arabic as it was encountered in Arabia.Hence the term Arabic numerals.

Do read up on the history of Mathematics as its a very fascinating subject.Though I am afraid Wikepedia is seriusly lacking in Content over this.

And the reason newham is one of the key olympic boroughs is simple.

Most of the financially strong councils dont want the olympics because londoners will end up paying for it.All the spending will come from londoners and the extra revenue(Taxes, tourist revenues) will go to Whitehall.

Dear Ken ,before he goes, wants the olympics as a massive ego boost/memorial.Therefore ,he's bribing the poorer east london boroughs to support his olympic bid and the quid pro pro is the facilities for the games.

Makes me thankful to live in Wandsworth, with the second lowest council tax in England.

  7. Re:Naturally heading towards socialism on The Next Social Revolution? · · Score: 1

Sorry but i Dont agree Communism failed.

1.To begin with there is a vast difference between COMMUNISM and COMMUNISTS.

2.Most of the so called coomunist nations were actually socialist which ASPIRED to be Communist and usually said so in their constitutions.

eg.Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics etc.

3.The only place in the world where communism truly and purely was successful were the kibbutz (plural kibbutzim) of Israel.I have a feeling the reason they succeded was that Israel at that time was going through a life and death phase and that most of these people had to suspend their natural jeolousies/greed to survive.

4.Another excellent example can be the OSS movement. From each according to their ability and to each for their needs.

5.Therefore,COMMUNISM good BUT COMMUNISTS Very BAD.Just because socialism has being practiced while being called communism doesnt make communism a failure.its a pity it hasn't been tried on a larger scale.

The parent raises a very good point.Except, this erosion hasnt just begun but has been going for quite a long time.

In Europe, titles of nobility were a sort of positional titles, for that era,so that people knew who that person was. Therefore we had King George,Lord Norfolk and so forth.

Similar Titles exist in US as President Bush,Secretary Cheney,Administrator o'Keefe,Ambassaor such and such etc.

Therefore ,they are nothing but titles of nobility especially since people retain their titles throughout their life.

In Modern day Europe, apart from titles of nobility which carry no meaning, there arent any more such anachronisms.A Person occupying a position is distinct and seperate from his/her post.

Therefore, we have The Rt. Hon.Anthony Blair ,MP,Prime Minister,Monsieur Jacques Chirac,Le President Du France etc.

The Americans have enthusiastically adopted the very same cultural tags which the founding fathers of America abhorred and wanted to do away with.
