An actor (as opposed to a 'star') can create subtleties of expression that may be beyond CGI. Think about it - intelligence, experience and talent, directly controlling facial muscles. As opposed to a CGI-jockey with a mouse shifting polygons around. Our brains are hard-wired to decrypt those facial signals and quickly notice when they are 'off' in some way. So, yes, this might replace some actors, but only the bad ones! Oh - and porn of course.

Exactly - just look at the BBC still broadcasting in mono to steam powered bakelite radios. Privatising them would force them to embrace new technology like TV, digital radio and the web.

  8. What about Wilco? on Shawn Fanning Is Back Into Digital Music · · Score: 1

Just one example of a band who uploaded their own music and shared it freely. This proved to be an incredibly sound business move for them. For their evil DRM schemes to work, the monopolists will have to lobby to make giving your own music away an illegal act.

  11. Circumvent DRM with a badge on Longhorn's Copy Protection Standard · · Score: 1

Suggestion - an (anti) industry standard 'No DRM' logo for indie bands and lables to print on their CDs and CD boxes. Aware consumers then have a visible mark of righteousness that shows -
1 - the band or label respects their rights
2 - the band or label is not part of the RIAA/BMI Axis of Feeble

BTW - MSFT apparently wants to promote a Secure Audio Path all the way to the speakers - unless they also overnight convert every single pair of speakers and headphones in the world to digital, there's still an analog output to rip from. You might need to buy a couple of resistors...

I've got one - first generation Compaq tablet PC obtained very cheap. Runs only iTunes, maximised full-screen. The aluminum housing goes well with iTunes. Maybe they didn't go the most efficient/difficult/brag-worthy route. So what? Everything they've learned will be useful, regardless of what hardware/software they end up using in the 'real' world. They probably had fun and have achieved something real, instead of just sitting back criticising.

Good point about the cruise missile though...

A SonyAppleIBMTendo spokesman commented, "serves them bloody well right".
