  1. Newbie all around on Apple Releases Sherlock 3 SDK · · Score: 1

I'm looking to get into programming (currently, I'm just a poor web designer...html, javascript, php) and I thought this might be a good way. Any good pointers? I DL'ed the SDK and was completely lost (I found the examples in the dev folder..yes I installed dev tools). Anybody?

  2. Shocked to see my BBS listed on The "Find Your Old BBS Buddies" Database · · Score: 1
Wow. I ran a piddly little BBS in Newport News, VA called Afternoon Delight (yes, I know the site is slow). I let out a, "Holy shit!" here at work when I saw I was listed. They have my listing wrong, which I'll correct.

Yes, this does bring back the good old days. I was in high school (you can imagine what a hit I was with the ladies running my own BBS). So this was the early 90's. I can't remember what years I ran it. It was kind of popular. I started out on 2400 baud and upgraded to 14.4. I was considering adding a second node and was working with another local bbs, Widomaker (who is now an ISP in Hampton Roads) on adding internet e-mail right before I bit the dust. I ran a VBBS system and created my own message network. From what I remember it was called AfterNet or DelightNet. one of the two. We had about 3 participating BBSes. One local and one in the midwest.

And I had a dumb nick. I Am What I Am. That was it. People got tired of /whisper"ing" to I Am What I Am (too much to type) so I shortened it to IaWIa. My little brother I named as co-sysop, CiscoKid.

VBBS was a great BBS program. And the programmer, Roland DeGraaf (sp?) was a great guy. I didn't deal with him too much, but he was legally blind. He had a special monitor rigged so he could program

I also ran VGA Planets which is why a majority of the people were calling in (that and LORD). I'm glad to see this game is still going. I need to check it out.

You know, I wonder where we'll be 90 years from now with Sept. 11. I look at your list and see Titanic. I took a kid to Chuck-E-Cheeses and there was a Titanic ticket game complete with a partially submerged ship in the center of it all. Often you'll see a submerged Titanic sticking up in the middle of some county fair. A giant slide. So kids can have fun on the ship that carried so many people to their deaths. Now I don't think anything like this will happen with 9/11. But you better believe we'll see a blockbuster movie. Count how many events above have been turned into multi-million dollar pictures.

At least according to the sign at their telemarketer call center in Newport News, VA. The sign used to say something like, "Hiring bonus, $180." Now it just says "Apply now." So rest asured, /.'ers. You'll still get those annoying telemarker calls at dinner time.

  5. Pinball Construction, learn something? on Where are the 'Construction Set' Games? · · Score: 1

Ah, the days of C-64 and Pinball Construction set. I remember getting the ball stuck, bouncing back and forth between bumpers. Still, I don't remember learning much from this game. Now, Artworx Strip Poker, that tought me a thing or two.

This wouldn't work. I remember these at Trader Joes (what a kick ass store) in Brookline, MA (see also Stah Mah-ket and Stop & Shop). You have to close the door in order to activate the scanner. It spins the can (or bottle) around until it's able to read the UPC. So, stick no workie because you have to shut the door. And even if you got the door shut with your stick in there, you'd be screwed and stickless.

I'll have to agree with daviddennis. I may not be using iPhoto to touch up photos, but I do use it to organize my photos. And the combo with iDisk is just great. The export to homepage does come in handy when you need to just display some photos on the web quickly. (And there's BetterHTML export for those that want, well, a better HTML export).

And everyone developing plug-ins for iPhoto, it will just add to the functionality.

And here's a good article on digital photo goodies for Mac OS X.

  10. Stylus Scan 2500 OSX Support = nil on Epson Treats Mac Users Like Second-Class Citizens? · · Score: 1
I've been pontificating on various discussion boards about Epson's lack of support for their older printers (and I use the term very loosely). I bought my Stylus Scan 2500 a little less than a year before OSX came out from the Apple on-line store). I have repeatedly contacted Epson to find out if they plan on supporting the Stylus scan under OSX. Their respnonse? Buy a new, cheaper Epson. And I paid about 400 bucks for this all-in-one printer. True, some guy has found drivers that allow me to print (albeit with no quality control, no ability to switch betwen b&w and color, no scan support) which I'm thankful that I can just print out quick docs in OSX. I'd link to the site but it's been down lately.

Since I, and so many other Mac OSX users, have have been treated by Epson this way (BUY A NEW PRINTER! FEED INTO CONSUMERISM!), I doubt many of us will be buying epson in the future. Too bad. It was a great printer.

  12. Cox running warning messages on Cable TV service on @Home Network Approaching Shutdown · · Score: 1
Here in Hampton Roads, Cox is running a crawl on all of their channels telling viewers to turn to a special information channel concerning the possible disconnection. On it it states that users should go to www.juno.com to download their free access software because it's probable that service will end tonight.

And I just got the service this week. I figure that at the most, we'll lose service for a month. They can't afford to be down for too long. The only reason I got @home is because DSL is not available in my area.

  13. Road Runner Tech support on Road Runner Doesn't Do XP · · Score: 1
Being a Road Runner customer, I can atest to their Customer Support. It really is quite shabby (as is most tech support, I know). They inadvertly disabled my cable modem once and it took them almost 2 weeks to remedy the situation. Their 3 tier tech support is a call back service. You have to leave a message with a job order number and they will contact you within "2 business days." On most occasions this is more like 3 to many business days. And if they call when you're not home, tough luck.

They do reimburse you for days that you miss and don't argue with you really (at least our local office doesn't).

As for the non-support of XP, it doesn't suprise me. I'm running OSX and I'd be willing to bet they don't support that either just too new for both platforms. I don't think it's an AOL spite thing (yes, I am aware of the past).

One last gripe. At one point, I ordered 2 IP's. I wasn't running a router and needed a second IP so I just used a hub with the 2nd ordered IP. I has having issues not having one of the IP addresses show up and I called. They said we sell the 2nd IP but we don't support it. They just support from the modem to the computer.

But customer support is customer support (don't you just love when you call CS and YOU teach the specialist something?). It's a shame that we have come to expect shitty CS.

  14. Played at Target, Grinding noise? on Crashing Xbox Kiosks · · Score: 1
I played it at Target (Wilmington, NC) and the only playable demo was Oddworld. I was going to check out the non-playable demos, but there was some kid waiting to play and my wife made me give it up ("You're stealing it from a kid."). It was OK, graphics seemed pretty close to a PS2.

But the interesting thing was a severe grinding noise that was definately coming out of the Xbox. The kiosk had Xbox, PS2 and I believe n64 (which i'm sure will be replaced with the game cube at some point) and the grinding noise was DEFINATELY coming out of the Xbox. Did anybody else experience this? I'm not sure if it was the disc spinning or harddrive noises. And I think the controller sucked. I'll stick to my less obtrusive, less buttoned PS2 controller.

  15. Makes sense on Sony Annouces Linux PS2 Port for US · · Score: 4, Interesting
Wouldn't this make sense for Sony to do? With the release of the HD/Ethernet port coming up (November?), it seems like this would be a great solution for the elusive set top box. And could this be a server farm solution right out of the box?

It's also nice to see a company do this. While it would be fun to hack the Xbox, this will be a nice solution to those just getting their hands dirty with Linux (myself included...Mac OSX has whetted my appitite. Next stop, YellowDog).

    Kudos Sony!
