Tomorrow you can expect that to stop, and only 'certified' individuals will get software that will work without DRMizing all the content first. This would be to prevent 'joe user' from doing 'unauthorized' things with his ( err, their ) content.
Sort of like how you cant buy freon unless you are government certifed.
Expect dev tools to fall under this same sort of control down the road someday. And before you say 'screw them, ill just use free xyz', when the compiler wont run on the board due to mandated TPM ( for our securty of course ), no you wont.
Um we are discussion a distribution here, not linux in general.
While i wont debate the validity of the general statement that its not ready ( or is ) , reviewing a single *expiremental* distro and generalizing that linux is not 'enterprise ready' is sort of silly.
Remember, we all fought XP as well. And slowly it crept into being 'required' most everywhere. Between the required upgrade path at work ( MOLPs ) and the dissapearnce of the previous platform from the shelves when you buy a new PC its just a matter of time. The required upgrade to Office2007 will also play into this, which can easily render your documents unreadable on other/older versions.
Dont forget too that most software makers are in the same boat, if they dont support the new thing they cut off their nose, and once new libraries stop supporting the old systems, then you have to upgrade your OS ( and hardware mostlikly ) to run anything you buy off the shelf. Much like 2000 was delcared dead, as Microsoff wont port Net3 to it, so all new net apps will be incompatible. XP will have the same fate within a few years too. ( Net4 )
Oh, there are plenty of us left, but we dont have any sayso in the matter. Only the 'elite' have the power now and the 'common man' is just a nuisance these days.
And if we DO speak out, we might just get put on a list and get investigated and perhaps 'detained' for a while, as a deterrent to speaking out of line in the future. Which could easily ruin your career/family/etc for life.
Run the bastards into the ground. They brought this on themselves when they declared war on their customers.
Though i doubt its true, and i bet it is really just more 'spin' ( lies for you that are a slow ) to gain sympathy from the lawmakers for the next round.
1 - I pretty much have stopped eating out, due to the advertising and 'sports taxes' on resturants. Most of what i eat is prepared at home, mostly from scratch.
2 - Sure, there are always things you realistically have to buy, but i *do* make a point to at least choose companies that are the lesser of the evils. Besides, there are plenty of local stores you can take your business to that dont use the 'in-your-face' advertising techniques. Even if it costs a little more, we all should be supporting our local mom and pop stores as much as possible and support 'choice', or we will all lose choice and be stuck with the mega-marts of the world. ( if you dont have local mom and pop stores, then its too late for you and i feel sorry for you ). Often times the small shops quality is higher anyway, so its really not more expensive if you look at it properly.
3 - By using the last technique from #2, you really dont need to memorize who you dont want to business with.
Personally, i make it a point of not shopping at places that shove their ads in my face. And reward the ones that dont, with my business. not that my little influence in the world will close a company down, but i at least did my part. Have you?
Forgetting the driver issue ( which is a whole different discussion ), modern distributions are not that hard to install if you want to choose a full disk install. ( dual boot isnt for 'ease of install' )
Boot the cd, press a couple of ok buttons and when its done you have a desktop.
Usability now that its installed, well that is another topic.
None of that matters when they get the letter. They have to fork it over regardless of what agreement you made with them at that point anyway.
I just wonder how long it will take to start general 'fishing expeditions' of search history to show 'possible intent' of comitting a crime and get warrants based on that 'suspicion'. " we see here you did a search for the word crack, come with us". " we dont care that what you have searched for might have been legal when you searched, its not now".
Scary stuff.
Curiosity did kill the cat, and it may kill the rest of us too...
2 - yes, i did insult you. I'm surprised you even figured it out.
And you honestly believe that you havent already done this?
1 - its not just microsoft.
2 - it will eventually happen, and when it does, remember that you were too short sighted to see it coming.
Today.

We might not get those millions from Microsoft.

He did that decades ago, and actually had the idea instead of recycling it. Wasnt practical then either.
Besides, since when is a 'side bar' or an application *part* of an OS?
Cars are for driving and living rooms are for watching TV.
Drivers are already bad enough, they dont need yet another distraction out on the road.
Hate to break it to you, its the present of voting now. Many areas went down the path of no return already.

Sounds like you want Python.
I have a 'present' to send them.

Might be a marketing executive.

Wasnt the beginning of the end, it was just a big push in that direction.
Sounds like one of many optical 'processing' techniques from the recent past.
All technology today ( and predicted for near future ) sounds like recycled ideas from the past that didnt make it due to one reason or another.
Why would they help out? Thinkpads are not their product anylonger.
Speaking of,what is up with the ibm logo on that picture of the tablet?

Will just go back on Oprah claim its people that are causing it and we need to act now.
Oh, and sell more books.

They can just remove all the packages i dont care about. That should reduce it to a manageable level.
Unless what you are installing on doesnt have a network connection. Then having a proper cd based distro is important.
