If you have a "job" in the piracy field, the software makers get no money, your revinue wont be taxed either so a government misses out also. Being a car thief could also be called a job, the person who loses the car gets insurance payout, thief gets/sells the car, insurance company raises premiums to pay for it. Everyone wins!
An extremely large European region gets mentioned but because the lack of geographic education is rampant on Slashdot people laugh at this "non-news", some small hickville school in the US adopts free software and everyone raves about it.
" a lot of stereotypes are based off of some truth"
So true, after all a stereotype can not come about unless a significant amount of a certain trait can be found in something. Sometimes its called racist or sexist or any other.ist but its just an attempt to hide from a factor of truth.
"Nick Robertson deserves the "large sack of the year award" for staying in Bagdad.
" Along with the other tens of reporters from around the world? Right now im watching Sky News live and about 600 yards in front of their reporter some cruise missiles hit a guard building as we were watching. CNN does not cover news well, it is heavily diluted and biased. To get a good view of things going on dont stick to one news source.
It really is Hollywood news coverage isnt it, CNNs take on the war is so awful and tacky I think they should hire editors from TheOnion and at least make it funny if their creating pages like this.
Amen Brother! Heh for years they didnt care about prices and how much fuel they used, it makes a small increase and suddenly fuel use is an issue. The huge engines are amazingly inefficient and dont give the same power as Euro/Jap cars with similar engines.
If you save 1 life more than you kill then its worth it at the end of the day. Its a numbers game pure and simple, forget emotions, forget ethics, if 100 000 live because 1 000 die then damn thats worth it, your looking at it wrong, its not 1 000 you killed, its 100 000 you saved, otherwise your saying the 1000 people who die are worth more than the 100 000 who might otherwise live!!
Life is not a utopia, just be glad your one of the ones that live. The British SAS understand that, they will leave men behind rather than risk killing their whole group! Its harsh but common sense, the "dont leave a man behind" attitude just causes senseless extra deaths.
The US subsidize industry to hell of an extent, and then if that doesnt work it just slaps on huge trade tarrifs to make their dosmetic more attractive than imports..then if your a friend of the country like the UK, you can argue for excemption etc, politics, lovely game.
"When most commercial software wasn't written in Pakastani or Indian programmer-warehouses."
Not arguing with your other statements, but with this one your trying to make it sound like a bad thing that there is some competition..If they didnt do the work, they would not get the contract..You have to compete in this global economy, its not handed to you on a plate in America any more!
True, heh Americans tend to forget that although their not as popular in America, their as common as muck in Europe and Asia, and thats a bloody big market!
Maybe most people in the US, but mobiles are becoming an every day item for every day people in Asia and Europe, text messaging, picture messaging, phone calls, not just yuppie Japanese, but grandmothers/fathers too primary school kids are all making use of them.
In the UK Pay As You Go minutes used to expire aswell as per minute billing rather than seconds, but no longer, eventually telcos start to realise people wont put up with it and they become much friendlier.
Well MY 386 with 64Meg of RAM is handling 1 000 000 users just great with over 1 billion messages per day, and I still play tetris on it at lunch breaks.
"Version numbers of other software for which Windows Update provides updates "
Did it say that they provide all updates for all software?? No, it states that it checks versions of other software for which it also provides updates too, gfx drivers, sound drivers etc Microsoft did not create you can ALSO update from them as I assume the companys give the code to Microsoft to make it easy for people to update. I use FreeBSD ports to get packages for my systems, I dont assume that FreeBSD coders created them all.
I think it was creating extremely easy to use development studio, regardless of the rights/wrongs and "clueless" VB programmers etc etc knocking out bloated code, it enabled a quick and varied software library for Windows, they also brought the first mostly easy to use OS out, regardless of how instable it was, security flaws etc, it got the average Joe Blow user starting to use computers in their home and tried to take it away from the Geek Elite. This is why Windows is so widely used, its not just their business practices, its because the mass market is NOT geeks no matter what Slashdotters like to think, its John/Jane Doe who first got used to a Microsoft world. There have been many superior technologies in the world that have done worse than their counterparts due to both marketing, and reluctance of general public to adopt something different.
I agree, the "solutions" that people are posting to combat the list are ones that could be applied to many sites that collect data, however this being Google it seems to have a Geekness factor that blinds most people on Slashdot.
Funny, when its Microsoft people start complaining about how restrictive their licenses are and squashing inovation etc etc, Apple do the same thing and its "Not their fault if you dont like their license". When Microsoft takes legal action to prevent something being done with the XBox or their software etc, people are up in arms.
This is true, but how about also the high costs of running business in the US, health care, insurance, wages, extreme litigation culture. also the US isnt the most neutral nation in the world, and although has no conflicts directly on its borders, it is still a target, the fact the missile shield is going ahead indicates the Government at least think its in danger of nuclear attack.
As you say, theres alot of variables to take into account.
If you have a proven track record then yes qualifications can be pushed aside to an extent, but to get that record will take alot of faith on initial customers, Word of mouth is great if you know someone who knows someone...but when im looking up a directory for an electrician or plumber all I get is a phone number and id like to know if hes qualified/certified, I dont know if he is a God with what he does or if hes the biggest Cowboy under the sun. They dont prove 100% your getting someone decent, but id take someone with that bit of paper over someone who doesnt with nothing else to go by.
You dont HAVE to be certified to repair VCRs, TVs etc etc, but I damn well wouldnt take my electronics to anyone but a qualified electrician, Electrocution isnt some minor mishap you want to happen to you!
PC repair is fairly simple, but I know people I help rather get in touch with someone that has a proven record rather than some free ad in local newspaper "Call Chuck for Cheap PC Repair"

Someone mod this up Funny! You make it sound like all Slashdot comments are well thought out, mature and informative with no bias!! HAHAH good one!

"The country with the larger population will have the biggest market and thus the strongest economy."
If that was true then India and China would already haven beaten America.

But I thought OSS was all about inovation right now? Surely it cant be copying designs from Microsoft as only Microsoft doesnt inovate or create.

Tiptronic gear changing, most luxury cars have it like new Porsches etc.

Ok, so computer generated pr0n, like some hardcore anime or something perhaps would match the idea more closely. Still needs an 18 rating.
