I agree fully, the world does not have the resources to bring everyone up to the standard Europeans and Americans are used to, as well as some Asian countrys. Not just education but living standards, imagine trying to give every china man, indian, african, a house (not some shack, im talking a proper house), couple of cars, and also jobs that are well paid for every single one of them, and the resources needed for that?? Hey I admit im generalising a bit, not every person in these countrys are poor/unfed/eneducated etc, but the vast vast majority are. Utopia will never happen, not while things are finite and energy costs money.
mud.arctic.org 2700, a Dragonlance mud...this has been going 10 years and has loads of players, reason? Its fun, it can be challenging information is guarded and new players find it tough. But the Gods take punishment to the extreme, abuse a game flaw then your char is abyssed, maybe deleted, maybe all your chars are deleted if its serious enough. Pester people, exact same. As the help file states "Ignorance is no excuse", while this seems harsh and has earned Arctic the name "Nazi Mud" at times, it keeps everyone honest, you dont dare cheat if you think your going to lose months of work. There is no shouting equipment stats, this will have the item removed from you. This game truly works at keeping the player involved in learning for themselves. Also shouting out abuse of any kind will get you deleted, Gods play regularly and sometimes stay invisable so you never know if they are listening.
Char aging also happens in this game, after a while your char will become useless (mostly tho they have a player wipe before this happens) depending on your race Human, dwarf etc, depends on what happens +wis/int -str +dex etc etc, also, die too many times? Permanently deleted, this stops "trash chars" from pestering others.
"After slogging 60+ hour work weeks for 10+ years and still not a millionaire, I've learned my lesson."
Alot of people do the exact same, becoming a millionaire doesnt just come from Y number of hours for X Years, expectations sometimes are just unrealistic, the vast majority of people in this world will work their entire life and never have near 1 million in the bank.
Heh yep, not trolling, but if you had the same amount of tax on fuel etc in the states as there is in the UK you would all soon quickly get rid of your gas guzzlers. UK pays about 75.7 pence per litre, while US pays 25.8 if my source is accurate : http://www.see-search.com/business/fuelandpetrolpr iceseurope.htm
Im in the UK and have a 2Mbs aDSL link, 256kbs upstream as all UK adsl is, I pay 100 UK pounds per month for this, which is pricey for me but I love the fact I get zero restrictions, my ISP (Griffin Internet UK) doesnt care what servers I run or how often I run them, gives me 8 Static IP address's and really good support (my router died last night, called support in the morning, new router installed in the afternoon). I couldnt ask for more really. I have a Windows 2000 server running and 2 FreeBSD servers running managing my databases, web, mail and dns and use file sharing progs all the time with no worries.
There is no clause in the contract saying "You will not block our crawler/monitor as long as you deem it ok", you quite simply agree to let them monitor it with no restrictions, the added clause "but not doing that in any way *they* want to" is your opinion and addition, but not actually within the contract agreed, so unless you get a private agreement or they change it themselves its not written that you have to like the way they do it.
This is all good and well, until the bills keep coming through the door but you now dont have a paycheck. As with OSS, at end of the day, no matter how much you want to do things for free you still have to live and maybe support a family and thus need income from somewhere.
Your opinions are just that, opinions and speculation. Your view is no more valid than that of someone who thinks there is some alien life millions of light years away. Unfortunatly neither arguments can be proven, at least not yet. I would like to think there are other life forms out there, but im not commiting myself to one side or the other as no one knows! As Tommy Lee Jones in MIB said few hundred years ago everyone was -certain- the earth was flat, the earth was centre of the universe etc etc...
How arrogant can you get? People have different skills and different knowledge.
Also Slashdot is good for people to learn new things, the whole point of articles is to bring to light information that people can discuss and be informed!!
"It's really sad to see advocates of Windows/Microsoft jumping on every bug in OSS. Surely, we [OSS developers, users, lovers] criticize the downsides of commercial, closed-source software - but we don't go party, if there is a bug announced and say "ha ha, you aren't any better than we"."
Erm, is there another Slashdot site out there I dont know about?? I dont feel the need to post links to prove my point, one just has to go through Slashdot archives to prove otherwise to your argument.
I dont consider it pointing and laughing, its more of an attempt at making Linux people feel better. As for originality, when are we going to rename the KDE Kaskbar, Kxplorer, Kotopshop, Koutlook Express.....
Well the fact is biology has a greater impact on morals than just about every other science. It is directly pulling at the threads of life to see "What makes it tick?", on the other hand physics, maths etc are not. Sure they can be put to use in a bad way i.e. Atomic Bomb, but "Physics" and "Maths" are basicly terms for the same thing, "working with numbers" and applying them to real life. Biology im sure has more than its fair share of complex mathmatics, its the use that the mathmatics is put too that is key! Biology has been the force behind some of the most dreadful creations to date ASWELL as some of the best! Its never the subject, but the application.
Turning a machine off after you have used it?
Not to sound too much like a tree hugger, but I dont see why non essential computers are left on 24/7, is 2mins really too long to wait booting up? Even just turning off the machine when you go to bed saves a bit of money/power until the morning. Over time it all adds up.
I'm rebooting this machine probably four and five times a week
Ditto, I use FreeBSD for my servers apart from one Win2k Server, but on the whole Windows 2K on the desktop for me cant be beat. Its rock solid, the sheer amount of available software that isnt what seems like continually in Beta phase. And the development tools, VB is great for quick little gui programs and using components from other programs, it may be awful to alot of people and bloated whatever, but its so simple and fast to do, and the.NET tools are even better in mixing code types and producing GUIs. I do sensible things like avoid Outlook for security reasons etc so I dont trust Microsoft entirely, but I wont be switching for a long while.
I am damn PROUD that we and the Canunks use the most enegery.. we do the most good for the world too.
Does that include all those "freedom fighting incursions" that the US is so fond of? I think alot of the world would rather get on with it than to take the help the US offers. And this love afair Americans have that makes them think they single handedly won WW2 is just laughable.
Also your premis that your energy use directly relates to "good for the world" is just so...so....American....
Not your opinion, but your wrong assumption from the maps. If you compare the high res Aerosol Optical Depth map, you can plainly see large concentrations located directly over California and the rest of the Southern USA, with a seam extending accross the mid Atlantic ocean, yes Asia clearly has the heaviest amounts according to this map but Europe also has very little in comparison. LESS than the USA.
Do not forget also, that it is not just Aerosols that the Kyoto is set to fix, indeed they have been banned in most Western countries, but carbon emissions from OTHER sources. USA and, suprisngly Canada are the worst in the world for energy usage (Per Person!)
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/canenv2.html
"Canada's 1999 per capita energy consumption, 410.7 million Btu per person, was the highest in North America, above the U.S. level of 355.9 million Btu per person. Relative to other OECD countries, Canada's per capita energy consumption is considerably higher than the United Kingdom (167.8 million Btu per person), France (173.6), Japan (171.6), Germany (170.4), and Italy (139.7)."
I think what the American people like in their cars would come a distant 2nd place to the oil companies that would complain about the US gas guzzlers being removed. I dont understand how US cars seem to be just designed to drink fuel.
Being a Brit, I see that being competitive is far more prevelant in the USA than here in just about every single thing, it seems more of a way of life in the states and drummed into you at an early age. E.g. Fear Factor, the British version and Amerian version are so far removed, the American version without fail the contestants are all "Yeah I am the best, no one can beat me..." yada yada I laugh so hard when they fail miserably, theres being competitive, and theres arrogance and inflated egos that so often goes with it. Then again I think that sometimes the British lack the drive and motivation that comes with being competitive which is a bad thing. On the whole though, I think the best is somewhere between the US and the UK attitudes, UK goes not far enough, US, to far.
Alot of Europe has very old infrastructure, far more so than the US, think about it, the US is basically European expats + some other continents. The US on the whole does NOT have a long history compared to a great deal of the world, + it has a huge land mass for building new infrastructure, the US can afford to build new while keeping the old, places like the UK which is basically the size of Florida -have- to reuse old buildings as we can not afford to demolish all/rebuild and dont have the space for simply building all new extra. Also although countries in Europe etc were more involved in getting hit by Wars the rebuilding was done 50 years ago and it was not a total desimation of citys thus requireing total city rebuild.
What can I say...Ditto! My family worked hard for what it has and then you have people thinking you owe them something because "you can afford it". Then I had a friend who with over 20 000 dollars debt paid 1500 dollars to go on holiday, I said, why not pay back some of your ever increasing debt? She said "Debt will still be there afterwards so I may as well enjoy myself"??? WTF?! I look forward to all these people taking out huge mortgages to buy homes they cant really afford then interest rates going up and then finally finding out that Just because you live in a nice big house doesnt make it yours if your 10 000s of dollars in debt!
Wealth is a privalige not a right. Wake up and take some responsibilty and ambition (I.e. something other than the national lottery).
"I was making 36k/year. I'm worth 55k/year "
Not to sound cold hearted, but, your only worth what people are willing to pay you. If a company can fill the job you want by paying 36k a year instead of your 55k a year, why pay more? Perhaps you have more skills/knowledge/experience, but if the company feel the extra money is worth what you can bring, then thats it.
You make it sound as if making more than one product is dubious, and that improving those products is also dubious.
You could compare and contrast a load of companys that fit the same mold.
Same could be said of nasty hardcore animal fetish porn, just a bunch of pixels and lines on the screen, should be no problem as a Barney replacement for Kindergarden.

Does this include the GPL license agreement with all open source software?? Yay, im gonna go steal me some code.
