How about make release deals with game design companies and build in easy-to-use tools to help ensure cross-compatibility?
If Apple wanted to be a heavy hitter, they could easily do it. But they'd need to do the following:
Lower initial purchase price of desktops.
Ensure cross-compatible games with a couple firms (Red Storm, EA Games etc).
Spread out the burden of lowering cost over non-Apple manufacturers (OEM).
The great number of user use IE because it's already there, pre-installed.
They aren't going to go out of their way to download another browser simply because a 1 page ad in the Metropolitan section of a newspaper touts a couple features that they aren't sure benefit them or not.
It's cute though.
Long gone are the fat, surly geeks who sit around quoting Star Trek and going to conventions.
Most up-and-coming techies aschew Star Trek and even Star Wars. The hip nerds of today don't even watch Babylon 5.
The geeks of this day and age spend their time playing video games and enjoying a social life. Actually going out in the sunlight and enjoying outdoor activities.
It's closed minded to group all techies in with the grossly over-weight, hygenically challenged nreds of yester-year.
It's not the platform MSTK3K is concerned about it's the NAME, "Mr. Sinus Theatre 3000".
Whether or not they make any shows, ever is moot. They own the name, they can enforce their rights.
Those 3 little words are why this happenend.
The OS will be ready to roll on Common Access Cards and use it's native pki within CAC for authentication and encryption.
Open Source will be cloning this next year.
Why? Because that's about the only thing Open Source has been doing for the last few years to "compete" with commercial software suites.
Accept it, until open source somehow unifies and is capable of providing apps that install *seemlessly* regardless of hardware AND provides prettier UI's. MS will always be on top.
Now maybe we'll see the death of illegal file swapping and the subsequent software that permits it.
Which means I'll stop seeing negative impacts on my production networks.

I'm sure it will be as interesting as it sounds. BBS. 7 hours. I wonder if I'll get those 7 hours back?

No one here has ever had an original idea posted up, with the possible exception of the book/movie/game reviews.
