I honestly believe that it's only a matter of time until Apple decides to try their hand at the SMB market once again. To some extent they've simply come in the back door in terms of popularizing certain aspects of their product line to the point that it's ubiquitous with computing in general (iPod). While having a iPod/iPhone doesn't translate directly to buying their schtuff for the front/back-office, it does have an affect on general acceptance. If Jobs puts his mind to it, he can improve XServe and associated management/server services to the extent necessary to be a major player. Apple has enormous cash reserves and they understand the power that yields in terms of RDT&E success. Maybe I'm dead wrong and Jobs has no intention of entering the market. I can't imagine him leaving that kind of money on the table, though.

I promised myself a looooong time ago that I would do my best not to get into a situation where my job could bend my ethics due to need for the check every two weeks. Show me a person with little to no debt, a stout (not huge mind you) savings that knows how to live within or below their means and I'll show you someone who won't hesitate to 'blow the whistle', call a spade a spade, insert cliche here. Sadly, employers know as well as retailers and lenders that debt equals power over the indebted. This is not 100% of the problem, but in my opinion it is a very big part of it.

This is a highly polarized topic. I must say, I'm a little surprised that anyone here is downplaying the importance of MIT vs. a less prestigious school (or even no college at all). I'll give you my two cents. I'm 15+ years in the industry (INFOSEC mostly), deep into 6 figures now, was making $80k at 26 years of age. I dropped out of school after a year and a half. I'm slowly finishing my degree, but on my terms and someone else's dime. If someone wants to see the 'piece of paper', they'll foot the bill. Period. My year and a half in school (a prestigious private institution) was a farce. I didn't leave due to too much partying or lack of funds. On the contrary, I had a decent job outside of school that allowed me to pay the exorbitant tuition. I left because the cost/benefit analysis said to. Sorry, but in the end it really is just a piece of paper. The meat of what you'll do for a living is going to be learned in the classroom of experience. Would I be regarded more highly if I had a degree from MIT? Of course! I'm not going to kid you; MIT would have never accepted me. On the flip side, would I be making any more than I am now if I had graduated from MIT, Yale, etc? No way. I work with folks who did in fact graduate from such institutions and where there is a difference in salary, they have some catching up to do. You will be happy if you make a living doing what you love. If you're intelligent and good (very good) at what you love and that 'thing' you do is valuable in the marketplace...then you'll make a very good living; MIT diploma or no. Save your money. If you're really as good as you think you are (so good that a company like Google should want to invest six figures into you for the promise that your awesomeness will come work for them (uhhhhh...yeah)) then you'll have no problems. Get the quickest degree you can from an accredited institution then get to the real learning. The exception to all this would be if your goal is to go into research...in which case you can ignore all of my advice. Just my two cents...many others will disagree whole heartedly.

Anyway, because I believe that it's significant, I will again point out that Google would seem to be coalescing to the wishes of governments such as China. Google's automated the process of blocking particular videos in particular countries via new country blocking XML tags ([media :restriction type="country" relationship="deny">CN]") that they've added in YouTube/Google Video. If you're not familiar with Google's latest (Do no evil???) addition to YouTube, see the write-up that YouTomb did on the matter. I have a VoIP carrier I'm very happy with that I use at home with a second line for my n810. Works fine over HSDP and works 'okay' over EDGE. Even the VTC over SIP works over HSDP. When I'm some place with WiFi, the n810 'prefers' that. Pidgin for chat. Full IMAP client. Bazillions of Linux apps. Sweet new interface with OS2008. I'm happy as a clam. Also worth noting that Nokia released OS2008 for the n800 which you can pick up brand new for only $250ish. I like the slide out keyboard on the 810 though...worth the price diff. Who cares! Apple missed an entire demographic by bringing out a product that was essentially obsolete on day one. First, it max's its data throughput at EDGE. For a phone that is heavily dependent on data services, this was idiotic. Unless Apple has a nifty trick up their sleeve to 'enable' HSDP at some later date, the iPhone usefulness is limited by this. Shoot, if it had HSDPA they could've integrated a camera and real-time VTC a la iChat (I've used iChat over my tethered V3XX via an HSDPA connection). Second, it has very limited Web 2.0 capabilities. Want to run the Google apps (or similar) you've come to depend upon like Documents, Reader, Talk, etc.? Too bad. Want to write your own? Too bad. The iPhone has some cool stuff, but for the money give me a Blackberry. Yeah, it's EDGE only too, but at least it's useful and can run all my Java apps.
