  1. It's happened to me.. on Is Your Computer a Fire Hazard Waiting to Happen? · · Score: 1

I've had my fan die before. I could only tell because a sick stench began pouring out of the power supply about an hour after it had stopped. I immediatly turned it off, hit it, and it was fine after that. Dust is a major concern, but just general life will cause fans to begin to fail I think..
I think a solution might be hard to find, as most would require a temperature check. But there's probably a power difference when the fan stops, so it might be easy to just put in a fuse that would break the power supply if the fan stopped.
Of course, this would mean crashing the computer... but perhaps at the cost of saving your power supply/not having a fire it might be worth it..

    You missed my point.
I don't have a problem with Microsoft, but if they release a Linux version then they're going to just try to monopolise it. Personally, I like debian, redhat, slackware, the many choices... I'd rather they stay with what they're doing, and leave the open sourcers to themselves.

It's a linux expo? I mean, I have nothing against Microsoft, but I'm pretty damn sure they don't have a linux distrobution (God forbid the day of a "Microsoft Linux").
Anyways, I guess they're just going to try to show the competition.... but that makes absolutely NO sense because, again, it's a LINUX EXPO.

  5. Re:XML And Java.. on XML and Java, Developing Web Applications · · Score: 1

No doubt that web applications are now becomming the more mainstream. However, if that was the case (ie. having to make a web application and not being able to use server side scripting) then I think that .NET would be my choice over Java.

But even going from ATA100 to ATA133 with a 7,200RPM drive, there's a speed increase (granted not very large).

But if there are speed increases from just upping the bus, then perhaps increasing the RPM isn't necessary as much yet.

I do agree though, we need faster spinning drives now if we really want better speed... or maybe just huge ram drives

  7. XML And Java.. on XML and Java, Developing Web Applications · · Score: 2, Interesting

Because Microsoft is trying to drop Java, and Sun isn't driving it as hard as it used to, I personally don't view Java as a viable solution for web development anymore. Java had it's place, but I think it's no longer fast enough for current practices. I think PHP or another webside language/scripting language would be more beneficial at this point than using Java, and certainly easier to intereface with XML from what I've seen. In fact, with HTML servers these days there's already native XML/XSLT support, making server side scripting/applications not even needed in some cases.

Wasn't the BSA the ones cracking down on the huge warez a few years back on IRC? This seems odd... the cable companies are doing it to stop the mass amounts of warez (and pr0n/mp3) from being transferred, that would indirectly help a lot of those companies (ie. less pirating of Windows)...
It just seems weird that now all of a sudden they're more interested in keeping people online with unlimited bandwidth...
