As though 802.11 wasn't bad enough. Now we can have someone sniffing hard drive accesses as well?
Every new tech starts with issues. 802.11 is getting there. So will bluetooth when need comes up. But in the case of BT, you will have to be real real close to the person to *snort*. And so it is not really that big a security risk
oil lobby.. as long as it is stront it will oppose alcohol, fuel cell etc.,
There is a oily extract from a tree which can be used to make a diesel like fuel with better properties than diesel. But no widespread use coz this will hit the oil lobby.
Brazil had no option. they couldnt afford gas.. so they embarked on alco. and this really helped the balance of trade. Unless legistlators insist on regulations that make use of alco. compulsary.. this wont take off.
btw in india the govt has directed that by 2003 all gasoline will have to have a 5% alco mix, then engine modifications will be done and this increased to 25%, this way dependance on OPEC will be lessened. When this happens in US, the exessive middle east meddling will thankfully reduce coz then the govt wont have much interest in that area. Rather that stupid lobbying with OPEC and giving them concessions govt should make all alternate fuels tax free and cars and vehicals using alternate fuels and electricity totally tax free, this will ensure self sufficency in energy
Well, many ppl would have already discovered this, but for others, this could be useful.
RedHat says there is no mp3 support, but surprisingly there is!;-) The trick. Mozilla:). They have by default added a plugin(plugger). Plugger can play Quicktime, mpg and mp3 in the browser window. Well not many of us like to listen to mp3 in mozilla, but this completely refutes Red Hats claim about not including mp3 support coz "We dont want to be the first to be sued". To be frank, wether the support is in mozilla or xmms, if hypothetically there was a case of patent violation, it wouldnt really matter. Well now that the roayalty has been removed it dosent matter, but my guess is that this hindsight was there mostly due to lack of knowledge... or mebbe there is some developer sitting with a sense of humour!
I know I know, many people are right now saying this is bull shit and all. I decided to come with a short list on what had happened if 50 years or 100 years before such stupid patents had been accepted, note that what is stupid today may not have been stupid 50 years before, so its kinda contexted to that era. lets start
Flying... Yea man dosent fly, if somebody can then its very much patentable, infact much more patentable than swinging sideways in a swing.
Using fire for locomotion... think in that era it was actually an achievment
Using non matter to transmit information, ie radio waves instead of paper
Scary huh, these are a few examples. By having thse stupid patents all we are doing is creating a ditch for the future generations. Ever wonder why all researchers and scientists prefer europe to amer.?..
"If ATI were a Winston Cup NASCAR, we'd say that the company is efficiently firing on all eight cylinders. The Mobility RADEON 9000 rules the mobile market, the well publicized RADEON 9700 Pro delivers the best performance to gaming enthusiasts, and the RADEON 9000 Pro is a solid mainstream card. Further, ATI's latest round of hardware has been complimented by relatively stable drivers - a first, as far as the gaming community is concerned."
This is kind of irresponsible journalism, the reviewer has simply lost the objectiveness, and the article seems to be biased, infact heavily biased.I know many wouldnt agree and swear by ATi, its not about ATI being good or bad, its about over hyping a product.
Infact while reveiw, the whole commentry is manufacturers spec sheet. Where are the facts buddy!!? No comparison, as if it were the only card in the market?
I am sure it must be a good card but we need hard specs actual figures, not sensationalist journalism.
Also, there is no Java installed. No Macromedia Flash or Real Player either. And that brings me in the multimedia offerings of this distro. Or its lack there of. Red Hat 8 has to be the poorest multimedia-ready distro by default that I ever ran (except Gentoo of course, which comes with virtually nothing by default:). So, there are no movie players on Psyche (except the limited Kaboodle which is not even installed by default). None. No XINE, no VLC, no XMovie, no NoATun, no nothing.
Wonder what the are trying.... it is a real funny business decision, I wonder how many home users will really want a distro without those...time to switch to mandrake 9?
And the KDE hacking sucks.. those people have not even given them credits... all abouts have been removed... It is really unethical
Get it?.... Such devices are common, I have owned one for a year. A processor is understandable... but I guess free advert for mice is a bit off the head.
Reminds me of slashdot omellete... I certainly dont like mice in my omelette
I expect that if these devices become widespread then someone will build a device to spoof them. and once someone has got hold of your data there is nothing you can do about it
Dont worry by the time somebody is able to do it, you will also be able to change your retinal signature.... and Minority report is still far away... wait a minute the russian doc is just outside my door,...hmmm
"As long as Security measures have to take second place to privacy concerns, the terrorists will win."
Wrong, privacy and security do not equate in the way you think. The terrorists win when the rulers use security as an excuse to monitor their subjects. Then the whole point of security is lost. Actual security should just prevent people from carrying dangerous weapons on board, and sadly confiscating nail clippers does not serve the purpose.
"
So, does is this a sign for how we might eventually get out of the patent mess we're in now? Some catastrophic event brings everyone together and the locking up of ideas with overly broad patents finally ends?"
I don't think so... no catastrophe can cure us at this stage. We are far too gone now. Back in 1914 if you saw somebody lying wounded on road you would take him/her to the hostpital, today you Rob the person.
So most probably if you have a bit catastrophy coming, you can expect a patent on the method to fight it. Period
how will it help.
Geocities has been slashdotted,,memo's been approved the harms been done.
And this time they didnt boil the frog, the put it in hot water first!
On the other hand, all is there is something by satanishere, geocities is trashed. So no proof. Is this story true? And Mr.Editors you know too well not to post links to geocities.. dont you. Better aproach would have been to download the images and then put them on slashdot.
Another thing, apparently DOI has 70000 employees, are any of them on slashdot.. I really want to hear what they say about it. Or if none of them are there on/. i would presume that its very good for them to be on M$. Come to think of it.... its about improving productivity. If a 70000 workforce says that wanna work on M$ why should anyone stop them.... But I guess this wont be true, there will be numerous who are opposing this.... and in this case slashdotters cant do anything except slashdot the DOI site every second day.... Its upto those employees to get together and raise a ruckus.
This Story is not on slashdot front page!!!
I got to it through the sidebar !!
in the story it says previous story is gene map and next is KODAK, but on the front page there is no sotry between these 2 stories!!
TAco theres a bug in slashdot!!
There is a very intersting applet about wing warping on NASA site.
Actually wing warping was discontinued due to the fact that as modern airplanes became bigger and heavier rigid Duralium(Aluminium+Copper) and steel was used, which was not very conductive to bending, But I guess with carbon fibre based materials that will change.
Wing warping gives a large degree of control. It is Demostrated very well in the java applet which shows the lift, the forces, the mechanics and the attitude on a model plane(like the one used by wright brothers).
I remember around 7 years ago we had a lan with novel netware installed. cant remember the version.. I think 4. something. And it was pretty decent. It was stable hardly any crashes and we personally had no issued. Have mostly been on solaris/linux since then.... I really dont know how they are now
Its just a game. Ok just a game. Comapring it with a diploma is.. well follishness! This gives the guys oppertunity to earn some after market money, so whats wrong.
Call is a flaimbait ifyouwant,ut I cant understand the GLUt in peoples minds. If a developing nation puts up satellite they can use it to put missiles, on the otherhand if a developed nation does a nuclear test then its for development of science. India is the worlds largest democracy and people there are not sadists that they want to nuke all the countries of the world.
You may be surprised to know that in 2000 years of indian civilisation, India has never ever attacked another nation.
As for nuclear weapon development look at this way, supposed USA didnt have nuclear weapons but canada and mexico did and were hostile to US, how would you feel, scared.. right. So when you have two nulcear armed dictatorships sitting at your borders you cannot expect otherwise.
It is real funny a developed nation has a moral right to have nuclear weapons but an underdeveloped dosent.
As far as space reasearch is concerened satellite launches came much after nuclear weapons. India achieved nuclear capability in 1971. Satellite lauches are for an economic reason. Already france and other european and african contries are looking at ISRO as a launchpad for their satellite and this will bring in much needed cash.
no, PSLV is proven and satellites work properly. The Cost reduction is primarily due to the fact that the components are indegenous with very less import content. Due to cheap labour and manufacturing in India the costs are down.
Another reason for the low price is the ISRO(Indian Space Reasearch Org) does not have unlimited funds unlike china where funding is much more liberal, so cost cutting is high on agenda.
No problem, it will behave like marvin and all the hostilities will die of depression ;-)

You always have a choice. A person is responsible for his/her life. what happened to us was due to us. putting it on someone else wont solve anything
