Of course a pretty webpage is no excuse for bad content. Just looks will ensure that people visit your front page and dont really come back. For the invitation you need the eye candy, for the substance you need content. so you need balance.
However some webpages are all eyecandy and everything else is a pain. A proper balance is needed. A good example of balance is this site.
Then CNN is also an okay example though it gets a bit cluttered.
Sadly, most webdesigners use some invalid M$ only code in their website, and non windows ppl have a problem surfing. These guys realize that 95% of surfers wont mind the nonsense. This is web democracy majority rules. Most sites which are coming up new are focusing all on eye candy.
You have other extremes too. Some people want to make it easy for lynx users, result, sites look good only in lynx! This is going too much over the board. IMHO a good site should have valid HTML, and simple valid javascript. Also a site map is a must. I really hate those sites with lots of clutter. The search engine can take some serious work. Otherwise I just love it, its simple, has never crashed my browser and dosent take too much time to load.

Great Idea. Do it. What is stopping you. I presume you have been hanking around with KDE and know some quirks which annoy end users. DID YOU document them... If not.. why not. Remember those guys are giving you "free software" with much fewer bugs and oddities than some closed source alternatives. They are not deliberately making it tough for you. So help if you can. If you dont like something, go to the site. Very prominent is "contact us". I have done that and if you are polite they get back to you and try incorporate the changes you request. So why whine. Ask them for it. They will try to do it.

You are quite right. no matter what people say about real, their technology is amazing. G2 protocol supports on the fly downshifting, ok other protocols are there but on real its seamless. And the size is also small. If only we could increase quality. I guess helix will go a long way.

Spirit of the law... sounds nice. Frankly speaking the business community dosent care. This will make then money, and everything else can go take a walk. Making laws wont halp, neither blaming the manufacturers. They do this for money and we can say that they do wrong. But every wonder why they do the wrong thing... coz its us, the customers who want to violate the law. they just provide us the tools.
Floodgate opening will take some time. The reason is that the chip industry is a very very challenging market. The costs involved to make a semiconductor plant is huge, and open hardware may not be as viable a business model, except for some things which will have a huge customer base.
Another major daunting factor is cost to developer. Open source developers need a computer and gcc or g++ or java... etc. easy cheap. But for VLSI design you need tools for which very few viable products are available. Of course we have open source simulators and open source compilers for verilog etc, but they are useless for anything more complicated as a 20 gate oscillator. Moreover cell libraries are all developed in house by companies and even if people sit and write freee verilog code, it will be difficult to productize it again for the same reasons that making hardware is way too more expensive that software.
I know many will differ on this and give the argument that OSS also started like this, but what people tend to forget that the major input in software is brain, intelligence and infrastucture is a relatively small percentage, however in hardware, a major input is "machinery" "fabs" which are actual physical things costing loads of money. It will be good if atleast open verilog or VHDL code starts to float around more that today.

I would say the novice dosent really exist. No matter what ppl say, currently there is no distribution which a novice can handle.. some level of expertise or atleast the aptitude is necessary. When we have distributions reaching that point we can say Linux has arrived.
However, we dont need all distros to reach there. Thats the beauty of OSS, chose what you like. So currently we have mandrake, redhat approaching the novice user, we have debian for the masters. But requiring some aptitude is actually a good thing. It gives a real novice a great kick to graduate to slightly expirience. The proof is in haloween docs, where the M$ guy says "It was fun, even addictive" . Making ppp work by giving a noauth option may seem rudimentry to a slashdot crowd, but to someone totally unaware of unix world fixing such a problem will provide a great ego kick. That I did it feeling.
So IMHO, the desktops should require some expertise, albeit little, but lots of documentation. Think this way, what would a novice choose, some illegal exception at blah blah blah and then crash, or neat messages telling exactly what went wrong.
Look in the automobile world, nowdays cars require expertise with so many gadgets, but the current generation goes for it, coz it kind of gives them with geekiness. Dont forget that a person who can program his HI-FI audio has an aptitude for *tinkering*. Its just the presentation. Give the user the power, make his/her learning curve an enlightling experience.

Wouldnt it be better if instead of stripping these things, they would make them availale as modules. While installation, the user can disable the modules he dosent want. So you have speed and ppl who want mail and news have that too.
