Enough, we can see through this ploy by the christian right... oh boy here they come again. Seriously, ANYONE can see that MEAN is just an anagram for AMEN!
Because this is Slashdot and it is required that all stories be written as poorly as possible.
I believe a more scientific observation would be because our society provides roles for those not capable enough to participate in a field themselves to act as cheerleaders for it - no different than sports writers, most contemporary "news" writers/critics, reporters.... and, you know, those that observe and discuss, but do not do. (like me)
Seriously, is this what stupid people think science is?
Science is not "trust and verify" - science is "Skeptical until proven".
Trust is faith, and faith of any kind is only born from a lack of reasoning capacity. The unwillingness to put in the hard work with the mind.
A few of the problems are that there's too much catering to peoples feelings (lie of compassion), pursuit of wealth (lie of greed), or intellectual authority (lie of arrogance).
Science - real "capital S" Science, exists beyond the petty constraints of humanity.
Welcome to the fruits of standardized testing, and pop culture science. You're not looking at Science.
Well, I'd expect that if Mr. Meier feels pressured or put upon in any way he can always go start "Firaxis Studios II" and have no problem finding investment capital. No issue here, the franchise is safe.
I interpret this as you having to go against your instinct, which would have been in an aggressive tone. Which makes sense, I'm sure you were/are pissed off... no need to rationalize, emotions are the antipathy of rational.
And I'm right there with you... do you think my normal handle is TelevisioSledgicus? Hell no, I just got fed up trying to come up with something close to my original handle. I'm in the same boat with you regarding virtual aliases and identities, as I'm sure are many others that have been using the internet since the dark ages.
But what can you do, there is no patent system for online aliases to say who came up with the handle first, and I really don't think there should be. Even if we went to real names, there are a mass of John Smiths and John Lees on this planet, so there's no solution there.
Is there a solution? I don't know, but I do understand your "pain".
Developers in the PC arena are going to shift over more and more to the ESD model (Steam, Direct2Drive, etc.) and cut the brick & mortars out of the profit loop entirely.
Nextgen consoles are all about the network connectivity. This generation may not have enough local storage, but I bet developers will begin pushing for large local storage for Nextgen+1 systems, so they can move to the ESD distribution there as well.
Publishers will probably have to opt for some sort of contractual negotiations with the brick and mortars forbidding used sales by policy in order to maintain a profit, and to get the rights from developers to produce box copies of software to sell through this channel.
I fully understand that it's not *just* a remote control. I'm just pointing out the idiocy of making a "revolutionary" controller identical to something not-so-revolutionary.
This is a case of right concept, wrong implementaion.
You and the poster that replied to you miss my point, and that is that of "Joe Consumer's" first impression.
I get that the 3d motion sensing is kick ass, and the functionality alone is truly revolutionary, and I applaud them for that.
However, the bottom line is it's looks like a remote control, and that is exactly the impression mom, pop, and the rest are going to have when they see it. They will lose sales because of it.
Well, I'm one of those people that picked up the game after it had been determined to be an AO product. In fact, I picked it up specifically because it was AO (never mind that towel next to the computer).
Shortly thereafter the patch was released that converts the product I purchased, the AO version of GTA:SA, into a different product, that of the M version of GTA:SA.
I immediately contacted both Rockstar tech support and the mouthoff address they provide on their http://www.nomorehotcoffee.com/ web page, asking about a bug-fix patch version of 1.01 that doesn't include the "breaking/altering" of the product I purchased into a different product.
Tech support of course replied the with generic "The patch works with all shipping versions" and ignored the fact that as far as I'm concerned it also BREAKS my AO version by turning it into the M version.
And I never heard anything from the mouthoff address.
Needless to say I never patched, and am left with a (very slightly) buggy, unsupported product unless they decide to properly support their AO customers.
FYI: It hangs on a 7800GTX SLI system, switch to non-SLI mode and it works fine.
-----
I will also say this, I specifically went out and purchased the game after the asinine ruling by the ESRB that changed the rating, to show support for Rockstar. While I do have the mod downloaded somewhere, I haven't had time to mess with it, and have only gotten to the point in the game where you go into the first crack house (i.e. I don't have much time for games).
I know you'll make excuses like "you don't play it anyway, why bother asking for a patch", etc. but the bottom line is I want Rockstar to be standing up for freedom of speech alongside me, not behind me, and supporting the AO product branch is the least they could do.
Actually his statement is right on the money. The job of schools is to enable the parent(s) to be productive members of society. If any given student picks up (or has) the capability and desire to also become a productive member of society, they'll learn something from the teacher and possibly go on to do so. If not we also have a very fine prison system.
Teacher dedication really has nothing to do with it. If you have, know, or are a dedicated teacher, that's just a bonus to the students, but not core to our society. Teacher salaries point that out very clearly.
We do a lot of contract software development for aerospace, gov't & military. Because of this we also get the occasional request to deliver our software ready to go on a server.
Every time so far I've built a server myself in house white-box style, just as I do for our in-house use. Then I hand it over to the Navy (most of the time) or whomever, and they go through their required processes to confirm that it is in fact "secure".
I've never had to do anything special on my end. Though since they were Windows boxes how secure can they be?:)
They've even shipped them back to me for service (got a big batch of bad quantum scsi drives one time), and didn't require anything special from me then either.
Granted these were only classed "secret" not higher, and they had network connections, so I expect YMMV depending on the particular purpose and destination of each server.
Well, I hope they don't pull the tard move the previous developers were and restrict the Skaven race to GM's only. If I can't play a Skaven I'm not interested, I can play dwarves, elves, humans, etc. in any of the other crappy MMO's out there already.
This is a good example of why there should be some laws allowing the public to seize IP from companies to prevent it's abuse.
Once an IP holder fails in providing proper support and care for any given intellectual property, a class action style suit should be able to be brought, and if enough public sentiment is behind it, move the IP and all associate assets into the public domain.
Others might argue the Star Wars IP might be another excellent example of IP not given the proper care.
However, I'm sure if all of the Tribes assests were added to the public domain we'd still have an excellent "product" out there, probably running across multiple platforms (linux, OS X, Win32) as well.
If it's any help to Macrovision, I vowed when purchasing my XBox that I'd never buy a single game for it, and have stayed true to my word to this day.
Don't support consoles.

Just because someone is capable of, and has occasion to make use of skills the cross over from another field does by default make them a worker in that field.

I'm pretty sure I read this travesty of an "article" a while back, I certainly remember that the author's lack of logic was driving me crazy. Then I caught on that it was written by a woman, and that explained that. It's better because it's purty!
It certainly didn't make me want to try a Mac the way the articles over at Anandtech did, but it did make me want to beat something into a bloody mess.
If the author is never allowed to write another article it will be too soon.

Color me unimpressed by the ingenuity of Nintendo on this one.

Never claimed I wasn't a hypocrit, my apologies for not being perfect. I do strive to be, however the PS2 got me hooked for a while. Sue me.
Score one for you, 0 for the rest. While the box has been through a lot, it's now a dedicated XBMC box. Rather sweet media unit.
:) less than two weeks to go!
As for games, if it's worth playing it will show up on the PC, or on a Sony gaming product.
I wonder how long before we get a working linux installation on the PSP
