It really is amazing the amount of trouble and money we all have to go through to rid ourselve of this plague of unwanted advertsing. Seems like it should be illegal, don't it?

From the article:
Studios are very keen to prevent copies of their films hitting the black market, denting box office takings.
In April, a 33-year-old California man was arrested and charged with illegally videotaping films - if convicted, he faces up to 26 years in federal prison
Kill, rape or beat someone to within an inch of their lives and you'll probably receive less than half of the sentence this guy faces. I realize he most likely won't get 26 years, but what's wrong with a society where you get more hardcore jail time for swiping a copy of the latest Disney flick than for say running down the Director.
Egads! I didn't anticipate the first of the "three-finger salute" bots until my third or fourth championship when the competition finally started wising up.
I guess I'll need to switch to Linux at that point.
I suppose as long as Candy Cruncher isn't his new crowning achievement. It's just with those creditals I was expecting something a bit more, umm, exciting... or at least involving a chainsaw, grenade launcher or a battle axe.
With all due respect... what has happened to you Mr. Hook?!?

Way cool screenshot.
Hmm, the main link was slashdotted, so I tried the OS's website http://www.opencroquet.org. Maybe they should change their main graphic to the "Way Cool screenshot" rather than the Monet looking Croquet game they have going on right now. They might garner a bit more interest.
The 1Ds's full-frame 11MP CMOS sensor produces a 32MB file -- as big as a typical scan. But this file is sharper and more noise free than any scan I have ever seen, including drum scans. There simply isn't a contest any longer.
I believe analog film still is superior when not having to digitize a photo.
Other con's against these high-res digital cameras would have to be portablity and speed.
At 32mb a picture, you can fill even a 40gig HDD pretty fast not to mention saturating the connection (firewire or USB) and there must be a delay in shooting speed i.e. 1 picture/per 3 seconds.
Of course, none of this matters for certain applications. I'm just think about the notion of replacing regular 35mm's with these new digitals.

Too bad there are 99% easier ways to compromise "secure" online transaction systems, not to mention ways to compromising the servers that run these systems.
So, even if MS manages to kill of all of the mod. chip makers, you can still do a homebrew mod by flashing a flashrom on your computer mobo with the hacked bios and wiring it up.
This puts the power to mod. you XBox in your hands, but unfortunately it looks as if MS is targeting people illegally using their XDK. What we need is an open sdk for the XBox and/or to wait a bit longer for XBox Linux.
Anyway, I'm glad I grabbed MAMEX already.
A bunch of the highly modded comments make this out to be old news or not very important ("my dreamcast can play divx").
To clear things up, two major exciting point:
1. The cracked XBox Bios is floating around the net along with wiring diagrams for the XBox motherboard. Therefore, anyone with a EEPROM programmer or even some PC motherboards can flash a old bios chip and wire it up themselves for essentially free. With this hack you can then run homebrew and unsigned software from ANY media the XBox reads AND the ethernet connection. Oh, and the XBox even has a hard drive for some more advanced apps.
2. The guys who hacked the XBMedia Player together finally figured out how to read media from the ethernet connection. So essentially you pay $200 for a MP3, Divx, DVD, etc.,. player (plus it plays some pretty cool games too) that will play files over your network from your PC media server. You'll soon also see web browsers, instant messengers, etc.,. as well. I think this would be pretty sweet hooked up to every TV/stereo I own.
BTW, here is the FTC's current attempts at curtailing E-mail SPAM .

Now, I just need to know what Battlebot weight class I'm in with my new robomonster!
Seriously though, it's base set-up doesn't look very rugged, nor stable... I doubt your laptop would survive the first fall down a couple stairs.
It's still wicked cool for the price however.
Imagine the new interface possibilties. Who needs a mouse!

Really, I registered a free account with this combo.
Oww! My retinas! I'll never play Conterstrike again!!! You bastards!

Perhaps the lower and lower profit margains on this type of activity will eventually put an end to sonafabitches like this.
Actually a 6% drop sound VERY GOOD compared to just about every tech. related BIZ. They should be celebrating... the bastards.
Anything over TCP/IP is Digital... there is no frequency beside on and off.
The article says "Chafe wondered if variations in jitter [they defined as the deviations in the ping] could be converted into a musical form."
Fine convert the jitter to music... but how is that going to help you beyond what a numeric display would tell you?
I have a feeling none of these people have a clue about what they are babbling about.
I believe the reference in the news blurb is to "The Island Of Doctor Moreau" by HG Wells. :)

SHWEET!
What are the legalities involved with swapping software both physically and "virtually" like this over a central server?
If it was checked out and fully uninstalled once you were finished using it, before it was returned, would this fly?
I'm suprised... reporting that he is going to explain it isn't a $50,000 fine. Have you editors read the fine-print?

Yes, that is one EULA you'll want to read _thoroughly_ before clicking "Accept". Could this be how the Matrix began?
Besides the next generation of the current crop of MMORPG's like Asheron's Call 2 and EverQuest 2, Cyan has finally announced their intentions of doing a MMORPG with the MYST universe.
