But, I'll bite anyways.:-) To be a "first world power", you need nuclear weapons. I am not passing judgement as to whether or not that is in the interest of long-term wealth creation all I am saying is that it is what it is. If India is to be taken seriously with respect to math/science/engineering/technical/etc, then a nuclear program is one way of doing that.
This is one of the very reasons I read Slashdot so frequently.
I am in the market for a sat radio system (I'm in sales) and after reading that XM is partly owned by Clear Channel, welp, that just made my decision VERY easy.
CC has been *on record* as saying their primary purpose in life is to push ads. They are unapologetic about the fact that they have zero interest in promoting culture or diversity in their "playlists". Not to mention, they are the biggest supporter/supplier of payola, which has already been mentioned.
In other words, this is a no-brainer for me. I hate Clear Channel and will vote with my $$$ this time.
Are you out there in Post Rock country? My lord, by the sound of it, I place you somewhere in the Colby/Hayes area.
For those who don't know, think of the largest fields you've ever seen -- and then multiply it by 50. It's so flat out there, birds are falling out of the sky due because there's no place to land.
This is a new thing since the early days. I used to d/l gigs and gigs a day through their system but realize....that was the old days. Most of the ppl in Lawrence had never even heard of this thing called "the Internet".
Sounds like things have changed - for the worse.
I know SWBell is the telco up there. Have you considered using them? I have used them where I live now and have zero complaints. Bandwidth has never been an issue and trust me, I've used my fair share (and run servers). To this day, all I've heard from them is "thank you for your payment". Seems like a good deal to me:-)
Not sure on that...but, I can decidedly say that OK uses lethal injection. There may be some arcane law that allows them to use the firing squad but AFAIK, they don't.
Note: I grew up in OK and have strong ties there. I have *never* heard of any criminals being executed via firing squad. All have been injected with the the state's "love" potion...
There are a lot of schools like this. I grew up in Oklahoma/Texas and I assure you, being a nerd is still *not* cool. Not unless you like getting beat up, picked on, etc.
If OSS is going to be successful over the long run, remember that the market responds to what IT wants -- not what the OSS community wants.
The only reason I say this is because most of the replies seem to go something like this, "yes, but forking is good for software". Well, it may be good for the people producing the software but it really sucks for customers.
I echo this same frustration on a daily basis. I must admit that, over the years, the lack of interest and total apathy towards understanding this stuff has quelled my enthusiasm for sharing what I know with others.
At some point, after talking to yourself for so long, you just throw in the towel and do what YOU need to do . Let everyone else fend for themselves.
Remember, you are an "armed" techo-geek. The very fact that you know and understand this stuff puts you MILES ahead of everyone else. That's just fact.
"The government is simply an extension of the people."
Dude, wtf have you been smoking? Yea, I read the same textbooks back when I was in school but experience tells me your statement is simply nonsense. Not to be a conspiracy nut or a tinfoil hat guy, but I think its pretty obvious that government is not just an extension of the people -- it has taken on a life of its own -- outside of the influence of "the people".
Would anyone deny this given all that you know about how government works?
As "common" programming becomes increasingly commoditized, more and more of it will be outsourced -- just as manufacturing has experienced over the last 20 years. By "common" programming, I mean C++, Java, and the like. Newer technologies, which could be considered bleeding edge, are not what is being outsourced. The stuff being outsourced is the "blocking and tackling" of the IT world. There will always be a place for leading edge technical development and engineering, however, if you think that your 31337 h4x0r java programming is worth a premium -- you would be wrong in most cases. The people making the decisions just don't think so. It goes back to money. If I can pay an Indian 20% of what I have to pay you - for the same skills - then why would I pay you a 500% premium over what the market dictates? While you may think you are worth it, I would counter by asking you: what can you bring to the table that he can't? (and rememeber, we are talking programming ONLY, forget the communication skills argument. For what I pay, I can friggin hire a translator if I have to -- and still have some left over)
There are exceptions to this rule, of course, but for the most part, programming is becoming a commoditized product. Need proof? Check the IT unemployment rolls to see how necessary programming is in the big picture.
Regarding indie albums -- I agreee....what constitutes an "indie" album?
And secondly, and most important, where can I get reviews of indie albums/bands? I simply do not have the time to wade through piles of shit to find that one diamond in the rough. While Billboard 100 is not my fav, it does provide me an easy way to sift through the fluff and find a few nuggets here and there. Is there something similar for indies/non-RIAA labels?
I live in an area that was served by a "mini" CO that was connected by fiber to the real CO (NOC). After about 6 months of phone calls, SBC finally put in a remote DSLAM and got my neighborhood up and running with DSL. Quite frankly, I was shocked at how quickly that happened (note: we were part of Project Pronto way back when....the $6 bil project to roll out DSL. I think its since been cancelled but not sure)
Since then, the prices have dropped a bit and now I get 1.5 down and 256k up -- for $49.95/mo. Not bad if you ask me but I did notice that I have -ZERO- options as far as competitive ISP's. For whatever reason, I simply cannot go with another ISP even if I wanted to....and believe me, I've looked. SBC has almost no NNTP access so it would be a compelling reason to switch if someone could offer better NNTP services.
On the positive side, I can run ANY service I want to on my home PC's. There is no port blocking or redirecting like Verizon and I have never received ANYTHING from SBC other than a bill.
Soooo, while people may be up in arms over this, I for one, can say that SBC has been very good to me considering my situation. (note: I live in the city of Dallas).
Ok, after reading some of the threads here, I was obliged to throw in my.02 euros
Don't forget that the purpose of class action suits is NOT to enrich the victims, rather, it is to send a message to the company perpetrating the malaise. Just like the famous McDonalds case. People freaked out because the woman won $10mil or so -- but they forget that the $10mil was not to ease her suffering, rather, it was to punish McDonalds. We could argue about whether or not that's punishment or not but the fact still remains....those large jury awards you keep seeing are mostly to punish the perps, not to amend the victims.
I don't make the rules. I just tell it like it is.
For a second there, I had forgotten what my OLD cubefarm looked like.
Get out of corporate hell. Start your own business doing SOMETHING and then you don't have to worry about what to do with your cube over the holidays.
Sheesh...
I hope you weren't serious with your question.

Yea, its called .mp3

Wrong on the Oklahoma account. Not sure about Idaho (but doubtful)....but you are right about Utah.
To my knowledge, Utah is the only state that still has a firing squad. OK uses lethal injection.
Ahh, I distinctly remember Sunflower cable back in my Univ of Kansas days.
:-)
Don't know what has become of them now but they were my first cable modem. Back in 1995
Yea, I was one of the first.

I, for one, welcome our new nerd overl....wait a minute. That's us!
Correct. And if you aren't careful, it will be remembered in the same way Minix is.
"Hey, do you remember that cool little thing that mimicked Unix? What was that called?"
"Do you mean Minix?"
"Yea, thats the one. Man, that was cool in its time".

Imagine how much porn I could look at using a connection like this.
My god, I just stumbled on to something:
1) Get ultra-fast connection to the net
2) Download lots of porn
3) ???
4) Profit!!!
I've seen numerous estimates of churn. Currently, they (whoever they are) expect about 50% of people to switch providers.
Pretty high, huh?
No, you are an adult.
In this world, there are things for adults and things for children. Sometimes, the things for adults should not be consumed by children.
Pretty simple, huh? Its amazing to me how many people miss it.
This is an excellent idea. In fact, you can do it on a personal level as well. Remember that.
Thank you for quoting this. That book is a wonderful, wonderful book.

Unless you are McKinsey or Booz-Allen (large strategic consulting firms), processes don't sell.
Products do.
Linux has a far greater chance of success if it is a product.
Mod this post up, please!
