That was a pretty ballsy move on Wired's part. I imagine their lawyers are eating their Wheaties today.

The document itself seems pretty harmless to me--but thumbing the face of the court that "sealed" it is a huge F-U to the court system.
The said thing is that the litigation fees will probably be passed down to the AT&T customers.

  3. As a father... on Politicians Target Social Sites For Restrictions · · Score: 3, Interesting

OK, I'm a dad. I am not concerned about predators ever reaching my daughter over the internet. Why? Because I keep an eye on my kid and pay attention to her. My wife does, too. Responsible parents don't let the TV, iPod, video games, or computers babysit their children.

If kids can't get the attention they need from their parents, they'll look for it elsewhere.

You can't legislate that. Parents just have to pull their heads out of their asses and be parents.

Politicians are reactionary organisms that will do anything to please the masses so they can get re-elected. Bills like this are merely placebos that make the government appear that they're doing something about a problem that should be addressed at home.

This is a waste of time and a distraction from REAL issues. But I don't have any stong opinions about it ;-)

You have to be honest about what you're in it for:

-First thing you tell people when you build them a system is that you don't do tech support unless there's a problem with the hardware itself.

-Second, if they need system level support, recommend a friend who does it.

-Third, if that doesn't work, declare that the going rate for computer tech support is $75/hour. For a min. of 2 hours.

-Fourth, if they're still insistent, get new friends and don't answer the phone :)

A friend of mine who is a doctor gave me some great advice about all the "free professional advice moochers:"

Intrusive Acquaintance: Say, I have this pain in my leg and some blood in my stool...
Target of Instrusion: That sounds serious...you should see your doctor about that...

    There's also great Dilbert cartoon:

Office mate: Dilbert, how 'bout you come over to my place tonight and fix my computer?
Dilbert: OK, while I do that, you can go to my place and clean the grout in my shower!
    Office mate: That's crazy talk.
Dilbert: Well, I'm not the one who majored in "Comparative Literature."

Maybe you can trade tech support for some help with those domestic duties you mentioned? :-D

Entering the Linux world reminded me very much of my experience in the Marine Corps.

You're introduced with verbal abuse and treated like a complete sub-human moron. Then, you gradually get promoted and you pass on the tradition of bashing newbies.

As with any "geeky" culture, the Linux crowd has a tendency to attract people with some issues:

-socially challenged individuals ignorant or apathetic toward others
-marginalized zealots of a "cult" technology (misunderstood or cast aside by the dominant paradigm)
-insecure, passive-aggressive people with a chip on their shoulder

Not all Linux-heads are like this, but like religious fanatics, it only takes one or two loudmouths to misrepresent the whole movement to newcomers or outsiders.

Now, if you want to reply with a flame or you feel a little defensive about what I've typed here, you might want to evaluate the motives behind your emotional response. I'm not talking about everyone in the linux community, I'm just making an observation about the types of people I've worked with in IT and the linux community over the last 15 years and these are some tendencies of my own as well as those around me. Some, if not most, are helpful and encouraging.

If you're one of those jerks (I've seen alot of them here on Slashdot), get help. Learn to be patient. Don't continue the chain of abuse, grasshopper.

  9. Microsoft Ennui on Is Microsoft Silent Before a Deadly Storm? · · Score: 1
[I wish I could RTFA--it seems they've been /.ed. However, I have a thought or two about the rumored MS "storm"]

If corporations are the new empires, then MS is Rome.

Rome grew--it conquered and absorbed other cultures. Eventually, it grew to be quite large--so large, in fact, that it began to have breakdowns in central authority, etc. Rome fell eventually.

Microsoft has the same problem that Rome had: the world is never enough. MS wants to compete in every market: gaming, operating systems, desktop, server, search engine, email, etc. MS has always had some quality control issues and outgrowing their supportable size has only exacerbated that problem.

Sure, Microsoft might be lining up to dish out a huge new line of products and/or services, but I think many people are starting to get the MS Ennui--inside the hedges at Redmond and outside in consumer land as well.

I wouldn't say MS is "doomed" per se, but I do think they are in for a downsizing. (Which, I suppose is doom to shareholders and top brass).

If I could say anything to Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, it would be this:

Fight the battles you can win and don't start new wars before your current ones are finished. Fix your security probems, stream-line your product lines, focus on quality not quantity, and accept the fact that not all the computing world belongs to you. Don't expand your empire beyond what you can control. Don't let the past fan your hubris into a raging inferno of complacency.

However, I think it's too late for them--they're already so ate-up with corporate jingoism that they'll set themselves up for a fall.

  13. There is some value, dammit... on Bunk Camp - Apple Gets It Wrong? · · Score: 1

I do digital media--I do it on a Mac because it's easy, low maintenance, and very mature. I am also a professional tech for my day job--so I deal with Windows, Linux, Solaris, and MacOS X issues all day long. What some people are panning as "bunk" is gold to me--now I don't have to borrow a PC to flash the ROM in some of my devices because the vendor doesn't support Macs. Now, with one computer, I can have a REAL native WinXP installation to test things on instead of a sucky VPC session or a terminal server connection AND have my trusty MacOS X. Everyone here wants Apple to release MacOS X for the standard PC--dream on. If Apple did this, they would be getting into the same problem MS has--spreading themselves too thin. Apple does a few things very well while Microsoft tries to compete in every freakin' market known to man (mediocre at best). Apple wants to sell computers AND software--the whole package. Releasing MacOS X into the wild to be run on all the permutations of hardware out there would reduce the quality and control they enjoy now. It's simply not a good business decision in the long run. Apple doesn't want to support Windows, either. They'll help you boot it, but they're hoping you'll see just how crappy it is compared to their OS. Booting it on the same hardware makes you see both OSes side by side on pretty decent hardware. Reality check: nobody is going to buy a Macbook Pro just to wipe the drive and run Windows--unless their just plain silly with math. Apple knows that--they're not trying to convert anyone to use Macs to run Windows. Apple is also banking on the fact that it's a pain in the ass to dual boot. While it is a convenient option for people who want Macs but are stuck in a Windows world, it's not practical day to day. If anything, Apple's REAL strategy is that the Win-on-Macintel phenom will help sell new versions of MacOS X 10.5 where virtualization is fully supported. I mean, why would anyone buy Vista if they can run the Apps on top of their Mac?
