I'm not surprised by the government document or the tactics--war is an age-old craft and it's a dirty one at that.

What I am surprised by is the naivete of the more liberal-minded folks who are so outraged. There's nothing wrong with being an idealist, a pacifist, or an over-all peace monger, but it's down-right ignorant to think that a war of any scale and/or any other type of police action can be waged without these tactics. It's not just a war in Iraq and Afghanistan; our foreign policies over the years, as well-meaning as it might be, hasn't exactly made us many friends. Political alliances and friendships are fickle and unstable--Iraq was our friend when Iran was the enemy. Afghanistan got help from us and Israel when the Soviets were the enemy.

We Americans like to think we're the good guys but we, like many disenchanted college freshmen, are outraged to learn of the unfortunate realities of world politics: the biggest difference between the good guys and the bad guys seems to be which side you're on!

The ugliest part of it is that our standard of living in the USA was brought to us by these same practices--be they economic or military. In the present paradigm, our continued enjoyment, unfortunately, seems to rely on perpetuating the practices outlined in this document.

When the present administration says, "Spreading Democracy" what the really mean to say is "Preserving the Status Quo." The "Democracy" candy coating makes it go down easier.

Everyone loses something--their life, their innocence, their money, their liberty, or all of the above. The idea is to restrict most of the losses on the other side.

  5. The rub... on Nokia Unveils "World's Thinnest" QWERTY Smartphone · · Score: 1

Really, when it comes down to it, it's all about what you want in the device. The cool thing about the market now is that there are so many choices to meet the needs/opinions.

Oh, wait. They already do that--except we call it kidnapping. The difference is we know they are the evil ones, right? (Well--we don't behead them on video so that makes us less evil).

It's funny how the current administration's practices parallel the rise of the Nazis in the early 20th century. Well, not funny "ha ha" but more like funny "uh oh."

Don't be a jackass. Seriously, If you have an opinion, express it thoughtfully but avoid assigning labels to those with different opinions.

    For example:
"Apple fanboys are so stupid--they'll pay too much money for a computer they can't upgrade or build for themselves."

This is how an immature person makes an argument. I know I'm asking a lot here on slashdot, but it would be great to see the above opinion expressed in the following way:

"I'm not sure it's wise to spend one's money on a computer that can't be upgraded or one that can't be assembled from parts you pick for yourself. For me, the convenience tax and premium prices for Apple hardware are way too high to be justified."

Macintosh users should note that taking the former flamebait only reinforces the baiting behavior. You paid a pretty penny for the computer you're using to respond so try to use more than just the "CFCKYUO" keys in your response. As much as you might try, it's futile to explain the subjective nature of the "Mac experience" to the kind of person who types flamebait anyways.

    Just say no to flamebait.

OK, just to be fair. The trailer looked really kick-ass and I am looking forward to seeing the movie. It's a great franchise but I hope it doesn't go the way of Lucas's Star Wars where he had way too much say in the production (he was too deep into it to know what should have been cut from the film--the best Star Wars episodes are the ones Lucas did NOT direct).

For this film, my expectations are simple: to be entertained. I don't expect the film to break any new ground with regard to visual effects and the story seems very unoriginal if not similar to the previous offerings.

On a similar note: I am looking forward to the next offering from Pixar: Wall-E. These guys are slaves to story--their films are amazingly in both technical quality and story. Andrew Stanton, John Lassetter, and Brad Bird know what they're doing. If there's anyone in the Hollywood system that is in touch how to strike a balance between the story and spectacle, it's Pixar.
