  4. Well, duh... on Press Favored Obama Throughout Campaign · · Score: 1

I used to think the press was "liberal" but I don't think so anymore. These are people who would sell their own souls and their children just to scoop each other. It's all about sensationalism. Reporting on topics that are "liberal" causes controversy which creates a story. I really don't think they care enough about anything to promote an agenda. It's all about ratings and getting the story first.

Obama was a hot topic because he was the dark horse candidate--he was a greenhorn senator, the youngest candidate, left of center, and a black man. When this guy started getting the voters' attention, by virtue of his underdog status, he suddenly became "the story" to report. Obama went from being the "awe, how cute--he's running for president against the big dogs" story to the "holy crap, this guy really could win" story.

No matter what your political affiliation is, you have to admit that Obama's campaign and his victory are as remarkable as well as historic. Even if he ends up being the Calvin Coolidge or Andrew Johnson of this century, his election is already manifesting itself as a great healing to the wounds of racism in the United States. That alone is something MLK and his disciples could not do.

If the economy were in good shape, the wars were going well, and unemployment were low, I doubt as many Americans would have voted for the change Obama promised on the stump--if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? Perhaps the Democrats do owe the victory to the media for reporting on the unraveling of those during Bush's tenure in the Oval Office.

  14. Fear & Loathing on the Internet on Tufts Tells Judge, We Can't Tie IP To MAC Addresses · · Score: 1

Our unnamed university uses Cisco Clean Access which registers every MAC address to a particular user. If the RIAA/MPAA were to subpoena that information from us, we'd not have the luxury to make that argument. We make a point to tell our students this and it has somewhat reduced the number of nasty cease and desist letters. (I think they've found other solutions like "Tor" to keep themselves anonymous).

We have a visitor wireless network that is the preferred "anonymizer" for students. The networking guys throttled this network to make P2P sharing a total pain although many students use it.

It's kind of a shame because there are plenty of legit uses for P2P sharing but the overwhelmingly negative reputation for them is for piracy.

It's funny how the RIAA/MPAA lawyers throw the book at people and basically blackmail them into a settlement but when one of their goons totally brings down a media company with a DoS, they pretend they didn't break federal laws.

  16. stop the silly competitions on How Do You Fix Education? · · Score: 3, Insightful

There is this silly competition mentality in higher ed--competing for being bigger and badder. Everything is becoming so "corporate" in culture.

There is an unhealthy arena of competition for grants and research funding that puts the focus on the research track instead of education. The competition manifests itself by the universities pushing a "brand name" and trying to become larger.

In the end, the university becomes an entity who doesn't care about the student but rather its reputation and rankings in magazines.

This is kind of a problem that stems from the new breed of philanthropy that really isn't philanthropy--it's advertising and marketing for the donors. The development departments are getting suckered into making these silly deals with donors (especially corporate donors) that places the focus on promotional consideration for the donor rather than the spirit of the cause.

Small schools with low ratios from teacher to student are probably the best way to go to maximize your exposure in the apprentice model.

  17. Too bad on Have Modern Gamers Lost the Patience For Puzzles? · · Score: 1

One of my favorite FPS games of yore was Bungie's "Marathon" series precisely because you had to solve puzzles (granted, they weren't terribly difficult, but tricky when under fire from space critters). Same thing with Half-Life.

I really enjoyed the puzzle part of getting through a level.

But, with both of these games came the next big adrenaline spike: network play against each other. Network game play and broad band networking gave everyone instant gratification to frag and test your skills against real people in real time.

Even if AI gets really good in these games, the bragging rights of arena playing on-line are just too alluring to compete with the puzzle.

Perhaps if you had to do both that might level the playing field for the "smart" people who can do the puzzles and the "fraggers" with inhuman reflexes?

I suppose there are some games out there--usually they are team play with particular roles for each. This keeps trigger happy people in check with the reality of the mission and objective (not just jousting to the death).

Unfortunately, the patent office knows only how to patent physical devices and they fail to understand the difference between the broad concept and the actual methodology.
