  1. Re:$100,000 by 32???? on Generation Wrecked · · Score: 2

Good points. I have changed careers though, luckily I have more than one marketable skill that I enjoy, and that helped with the salary, so I do own now. But to be honest, my wife, who is still in restaraunts, has never made more than $28,000, and that was at a very high profile restaraunt in Seattle, with a sous chef position. A few chefs make a lot of money, most don't, and those that toil underneath them make much less, with benefits that would make a normal 9 to 5'er choke. Sorry about sliding slightly OT.

After going to culinary school, my starting income was $18,600. This was for a sous chef position at a large, expensive hotel. This was 9 years ago. Over the next 5 years, my income in the culinary industry, rose to a whopping $26,000 per year. I'm at a loss on how I should have saved $100,000 during that time, purchased a house, and had more than $20,000 in equity in it. I wasn't exactly driving a BMW during that time. 4 years ago, I changed careers, ( I wanted to have a regular family life), and my income has changed becuase of it, so it's easier to save now, but I think the expectations in the article are a bit higher than what the average person is capable of.

My cable company told me I couldn't modify my box to get free pay-per-view. When I left them, my satellite company said I couldn't modify my card to get all the channels. (I have a friend who PAYS for all the channels, but he has a hacked card, because he wants to see the local networks, and because the cable companies are so greedy, his satellite provider couldn't offer it.)

There's a difference in services though. While you pay for an Xbox, you own it, and should be able do what you want to it, but you don't own your cable box, it's still the property of the cable company, well, unless you buy one. However, the cable company still pays a fee to the companies that provide it content so you can have something to watch, so by modding a cable box to get free anything, you're cheating the cable company, and causing a real loss. The same goes for satellite. Console mods don't cheat anyone out of possible income to cover costs. I do agree with you on cell phones though, but the fact is, that cell phone companies don't make much money off of hardware, recurring revenue is their lifeblood.

I was baking in 5th grade, geeking on a VIC20 by the 9th, and attended Culinary School instead of college where I got my geek fix by doing my work study in the computer lab. I've had careers since then in both fields, starting with restaraunts and catering, moving to desktop support and now administration. Many of the skills I learned in the culinary industry carry over very well into the tech industry.

The similarities in the processes of catering a 1500 person event, and rolling out 500 workstations are greater than you may imagine.

Geeks should make great chefs, we're inherently curious, and can approach things in both a logical and creative manner.

Most of the great chefs I met, are on the inside, great geeks as well.

I don't understand this 'Free TV' Concept. Where I live you need cable in order to get any type of decent reception. Maybe it's time for the broadcast networks to change their business model to the Slashdot one. Over the air is free, with no commercials, over cable could be a subscription, with no commercials. Cable and Sattelite providers could simply sell the major networks as a package, much like the premium packages they sell. There's no reason I can think of why this wouldn't be possible, and face it, since the best programming resides elsewhere, you could avoid them altogether.
