No, I'm simply saying I do not appreciate being lumped into the mp3 p1r4t3 d00dz category like the parent post would imply. And I refuse to pay even more when what I'm already overcharged for the laughable connection I have as it is. Don't they realise that these noble, honourable souls constantly downloading gigabytes upon gigabytes of MP3s and porn deserve a free ride?

No, but I'm already paying by the month for my MP3s. And Comcast is already gouging me for $55 each month for the cable modem.

The connection is shitty, with frequent lag spikes. Ever had a Google search page stall while loading? It's pretty sad, and I experience it multiple times every day. $55 is already outrageous for the crap quality of the connection they give me, and now I'll be expected to pay more for those laggy, stalling downloads of MP3s I've already paid for.

    Thanks, but no thanks.

I believe you could do something similar with apt-get and a crontab. :) Put the Debian security server in your sources.list, and have apt-get upgrade your packages from it on a daily/weekly/monthly/whatever basis. There may be a downside to doing this, I honestly have never tried it - but I can't think of any reason off the top of my head why it wouldn't work.

I've been following AbiWord development for a while, and I'm still amazed by this little piece of software. I use it for all my small- and medium-sized documents (anything larger and I use LyX), and I love it.

One of the strong points of AbiWord is there's all sorts of nice "little things" features, such as the ability to import and export PalmDoc and PsionWord documents (I have both a PalmOS handheld and a Psion/EPOC/Symbian/whatever handheld). The lack of tables is a drag, but once that's added, I think this will truly be the perfect lightweight word processor. None of that useless bloat a la MS Office, just the features 99% of people need 99% of the time. Kudos to the AbiWord team.

It wraps its own sound functions around the program, and records any audio output. It's worked with every program I've tried -- RealPlayer, mikmod, web browsers with plugins, and so forth.

When you look back at all the enthusiasm Americans (and indeed, the world) had for such things as setting foot on the moon, and when practically every friggin' launch was televised to eager audiences everywhere... Contrast that to today, and you realize just how much it's changed.

The first thing that came into my mind when reading the parent post was Homer sitting at the TV, and a televised NASA launch comes on. He struggles to change the channel, the batteries fall out of the remote, etc. etc. I figure this is how a lot of people feel these days about NASA and space exploration. Yes, the part you're missing is that Microsoft does not want the license transferred at all if it was a copy of Windows that came with your PC. With regards to this school stuff, they're talking about transfer of Windows with the PC it came with. That, to them, is ok.

But they're saying that if the PC does not appear to come with the originally-bunbled copy of Windows, then the school should not accept it. Supposedly the original purchaser of the PC is off enjoying (heh) their copy of Windows on another system, which would be a big no-no in Microsoft's eyes.

Ok, 96877 is rather serious, but c'mon... the home button not appearing in the main toolbar? Whoopdidoo. In my mind, it belongs on the link bar with the other links. Back is not a link. Front is not a link. Stop is not a link. Home is a link, and so are the items in my Bookmark menu and my favorites toolbar. An option to toggle where it appears would be handy for those who want to change it, but I don't see this as a show-stopper.

As for the external editor bit, yeah that's a good point, but for 90% of users, will it matter much? No. The average user does not know that you can view the source of HTML, much less edit it as such. And a lot of them don't really care. They just want to browse the web in a pleasant fashion, which is something Mozilla does an admirable job of providing, IMHO.

  24. Re:Pay For Play? on Music 20 Cents a Track in India · · Score: 2

I'm equally skeptical that people will pony up money when they can still easily get it for free

The problem with stuff like Gnutella, Kazaa, etc. is you generally have to know EXACTLY what you're looking for. One of the reasons I joined emusic.com (a pay service, $10-15 a month depending on which subscription you get) is because I can find all sorts of stuff simply by genre and style, or by specific artist/song if I choose.

I can't go to Gnutella and say "find some contemporary jazz" and expect to get anything decent. I can go and type "Louis Armstrong" if I know that's what I want, but I don't always know what I want. Most people don't either.

Here's a sum-up list of why I pay for emusic:

    • Search by artist, track, album, or browse the genres. The latter is something you really can't do well in existing file-sharing networks.
    • Excellent download speeds at constant rates. I can snag multiple tracks off emusic at 180-200k/sec pretty much anytime, day or night. Contrast this to the crappy 2-5k/sec I got from people on Gnutella.
    • Lots of music in the styles I like. I'm not much for what's "cool" like Brititney Spears or whatever. Since the filesharing networks, by their very nature, tend to only have what the majority of people like, it's hard to find the music *I* enjoy. I don't see a lot of smooth jazz or caribbean music out there on the leech networks.

Other than that, all I can say is - go try out the 30 day trial and see for yourself. It's pretty sucky you have to have a credit card to sign up for the friggin' trial, but you may be surprised what good music there is to be found on there. Personally, what I find is worth paying for.

  25. Makes me glad... on Best Buy Backs CD Copy Impairment · · Score: 2

... that I just signed up for emusic.com. You won't find Britney Spears or the like there, but then again, that may be a good thing depending on your point of view. I've found all sorts of good stuff on there from independent artists, things the RIAA doesn't seem inclined to try and sell. $15 a month is a little steep, but then again, that's cheaper than a single CD with the latest shovel-songs courtesy of the RIAA... And there's a free trial, too. :)
