Islam may be problematic, but Muslims are NOT the enemy. Even if you do not respect Islam (for something founded and justified) it is irrational to blame everyone who grows up in an Islamic culture, or label them as enemies. There are plenty of Muslims who are skeptical about religious literalism. We're much better off treating them as friends, and let them come to their own conclusions, as much as we can.

  7. Re:Wind power efficiency on World's Largest Wind Turbine · · Score: 0

European countries have subsidies in place that encourage wind energy investment. In the US, the subsidy expires every 2 years, which creates a lot of uncertainty in the industry. Investors wait for the subsidy to be renewed before investing, hence a boom-crash cycle; we were in a boom from 2000-2002 or so, and now we are in a crash. Since alternative energy does not rate in Darth Cheney's America, the subsidy has expired. It is worth noting the US is subsidizing oil on a massive scale, to the tune of hundreds of billions per year. What portion of our military budget is devoted to securing access to oil? How many huge tax breaks do the big oil companies push through? If we subsidized alternative energy like we do oil, we would be leading the world. The problems of of renewables (higher cost and energy storage) can be solved. But, of course, there is no imagination emanating from Washington right now. That's what you get when the president does not retain advisors who disagree with him, and cannot speak coherently, think rationally, or engage in a moment of self-reflection.

The attitude I try to take is this: the work will be there tomorrow. If you get complaints about how trouble tickets are not cleared fast enough, make your case that there is not enough of you to go around. Set an expectation about the hours you are willing to work. If a critical system is offline, make an exception, but if there is a problem that inconveniences one person, let 'em wait. I do not yet have a family but I have found brandishing an imaginary one wards off panhandlers in the streets of San Francisco like a charm, as in "I've got my own family to take care of". Think of the people you support like they were panhandlers - at least when they make unreasonable requests!

  23. It's the backstory, stupid! on LOTR: Two Towers Extended Edition Reviewed · · Score: 1

There has already been mention of both trilogy's backstories. I feel that it is worth mentioning that LOTR's backstory is epic, and The Matrix's backstory (the Animatrix) is CRAP. Did you watch that idiotic thing about the machines founding a city called "01" in Iraq? It was so insulting, so phoned in, that it left me wondering why they didn't bother even trying.

Now I'll admit that the bulk of The Silmarillion is difficult to read, particularly the story of the Elves' battle with Morgoth (the first age). The idea of the story was solid, though, and the references to it in LOTR work incredibly well. In fact it is widely recognized as a groundbreaking work of literature for good reason. The story of Numenor (the second age) was gripping. In fact, I wish Peter Jackson would make another epic trilogy based on that. Can you imagine how much better it would be than the latest Star Wars, where we watched George Lucas, surrounded by sycophantic yes-men, defacate on his legacy.
