It's hard to even tell it's a book he's talking about. it could be some game or some back room pot smoking gibberish that could include things like "maybe each atom is like a little solar system. with the nucleus being the sun and the electrons the planets" "whoa dude, trippy"
let me put it in your language (as best i can fudge, i'm not a programmer myself...
"programmer" =! "good book reviewer"
hmmm, not sure how to say, could be, but not necessarily... damn 1 cred class of c++ two years ago, i can't remember that shite!
---is it drinking alone if you're talking to someone on IM?
True, just like there were a couple computer viruses that searched out and destroyed the bad ones.
of course, this wouldn't work. viruses can't attack each other.
perhaps we can make viruses to attack bacteria strains? but this is too questionable. what if you make a strain that kills off good bacteria that we need? no, too risky. kinda like the bacteria that eat petroleum, and could make it into some underground reservoir. just too dangerous
so what good could these virii do for us? safely, not much. there's too many things that go wrong with simple chemicals we use in regular drugs, much less a biochemical virus, which is much more complicated than anything we can wholley, fully, and correctly predict
that's what it reminds me of, asimov's historians on the main planet of the Empire, going through old records that are slowly dilapidating into nothingness. eventually, we forget earth his the 'motherland' too.
of course, i'd rather be the solarians, living forever and a half, screwing everything in sight...
very true, Mac / OSX has good software. but, how expensive is the hardware? i can pick up a cheap mobo about anywhere for a PC, and build my own computer. don't hear about that as much as a Mac. 'open-hardware' if you will.
also, the big thing M$ did, was switch to the NT kernal with win2k and XP. the stability, though not as great as they may claim, as i crash XP daily at work, was enough to make it a lesser evil, and keep linux from more desktops
reasons for windoze winning:
1) they have the marketing clout, and already entrenched software base, which a formidable mountain to climb in any case. this goes along with compatibility issues. i'd use something else if it ran everything this POS OS does. e.g. Lindows, good, but not the bestest ever, how many hundreds of millions to advertise the xbox? who else could imaginably think of that
2) they have people updating their OS's for things other than security, making things nifty for the common idiot ahead of anyone else. sure, OSX can do that too, they have resources. e.g. XP remote access. even i think that's nifty, though if i trust it as of yet. and passport, which is a story in its own right
3) common idiots can barely figure out how to click on things in windows, much less type something in a command line. e.g. some people don't even know what OS they have if you ask them
4) monopolistic tactics. yes, they really do use them, believe it or not. really, any business would if in the same position, so we can't really fault them as much as we do. e.g. licensing scare tactics against PC makers
5) general attack strategy. they don't wait for something to be refined in order to declare it the best ever. they throw it out there, let it mess crap up, then patch it. remember when they said they'd support bluetooth? yeah, they kinda took a too big step there. also, they attacked into other domains, such as the internet. at first, they were far behind anyone else, and basically ignored the internet. then, they decided not only to try it, they threw ever bit of effort they could at it. it was a battle, but the giant won in the end. e.g. netscape died, xbox
i think windows is faltering though. they're trying to control too much with passport. they're restricting too much in XP. when a tech person in the family says don't use XP, even common idiots listen. with the right breakthroughs, and perhaps some god-knows-what killer ap that only works on *nix, the mountain, the giant, could fall.
why don't we just let them decide everything for us. then everyone will be happy happy happy.
seriously, unless the big 3 or 4 or whatever have incentive do unite their IM's, there will be none
but, if you unite, there is a security issue. of all people, the readers of/. should know this. it's one reason why M$ gets targeted by virii... they're the baby seals with big eyes just looking for a beating. this is what would happen with such a unified system. but, if it were open-source... (*gasp* says the big companies! heresy!)
besides security, the issue of servers comes into play. who will host this crap for cheap? will people pay 2 bucks a month for IM? i doubt it, knowing those who only have something like 5 - 10 people on their list. will there be advertisements like there is now? will there be run-arounds like ther is now? it'd be nice if everyone just got along, but what's the chances of that happening, huh?
and unless you want to be a mathematician, or research engineer, the best way to go.
to quote an engineer at our Institute of Technology (which does research for gov't projects, high level stuff) "why are you taking calculus classes at "-my university-"? they're math department is horrible! go take them at "-the main community college-.
i personally couldn't get enough out of just reading a book. i wouldn't have the patience or self discipline to set a work schedule for them. so, i also suggest finding an online course. even if it's not an accredited school, it's just a refresher really. good luck!
talk about off topic... but imagine me, an electrical engineer who builds networks, albeit of a controls engineering sort, is not even allowed to view the computer Date/Time Properties, much less install a program. oh, and i'm violating company policy by going to/., they log all my emails, and they block sites, sometimes relevant ones by accident. then, i tell them yesterdaythat my vid card is fux0red and won't show green anymore. i know why: the power supply fan died, and the computer overheated, which fried a chip that is involved in the color green. i keep telling them, sometimes when they're in a cubicle right by me, and they ignore it. please, IT is not the godhead they (sometimes at least) make themselves out to be.
As someone who grew up on a farm, it's really not a big deal to me. my sister really had fun looking at things while we did... now she's a doctor. go figure
any time i use MY handle, i get downtrodden, no matter how informative i am, or whatnot. i'm not sure if it's/.'s people who mod me down or what, but sometimes it seems like it's not really worth it to play the 'popularity contest' to see who gets modded up the most. oh, mod this down, cause it's my own opinion.
how do they stabilize it? in a conventional fuselage, the sets of wings do this. with one wing, with one center of gravity to work with, they have to do something to move weight. do they move fuel while flying? what?
a more detailed (engineer-friendly) page would be nice
It does make you wonder at how our sewers and cities are affecting how animals evolve. crayfish and regular fish adapting to those tunnels, living with the chemicals and shit we put down there, all has to affect their 'natural selection' to an extent. i wouldn't be surprised if some animal, raccoon perhaps, would evolve to only live on those kinds of animals, and we'd have an entire ecosystem. perhaps with bums at the top, eating the 'coons? who knows!
have to look to the future for these cases. we all know that technology will become more and more advanced, and evetually be so cheap and readily available that not much can stop it.
ing the right to the military and police to do this just for the possible, but unknown and unsubstantiated 'terroroist,' is a little paranoid to me. and, once the upper officials have this protection, won't ones below them as well?
every time you give some right to the government that the common people do not have, chaos of some sort screws sh1t up.
just an american "individual-rights-freak" opinion though.
How durable are they? i assume with a smaller laser, they're just putting more lines and bits onto one CD. with lines closer together, wouldn't that mean that even a slight smudge would obliterate obscene amounts of data? thus, they really need a case, as previously stated. which would only work with the small "coin sized" version, and not with the regular CD/DVD-sized version (those would just be monstrous)
back in high school, we had macs. and, the computer teacher was a huge bolo fan (remember bolo, the little 2-D tank game?) well, we had a club for that, which even got its picture in the school year-book.
Now that i'm in college, i've met people who've set up yet another game club. although we have a network campus-wide to play on, which we do, each saturday or friday, we get to use the library. although this isn't sanctioned by the university, and we have to reformat the computers after each session (and install games each time as well), it's been a lot of fun. and now that our University is busting down on drinking (underrage, and public intox as well), it's provided an alternative to the incessant parties and drinking that pervades our campus. although, i usually go to parties instead..
yes i'm an electrical engineer who reads/. constantly, but still has a g/f. just call me a minority cracka
um, all those posts above me are nonsensical. they're sending more than one bit at a time, not waiting for each one to reach before sending the next. so, the time each takes cannot be accurately calculated. anywho, maybe i'm wrong, but maybe i'm not... who even knows truth from fiction in these damn replies

what if he uses mapquest to find his way. THAT would be a bit more dangerous. oh wait, that's what those goddam GPS cars have!

whoa, my bad... i just typed and submitted.. and i'm usually good at catching that crap! and dis be modded down to an offtopic...

poop, there goes my karma
good info i guess, even though it's blocked from my work connection... boo IT! :P
i'm more interested in the Bud Light than the balloon.
and, for the non-americans ("don't drink that piss water, blah blah blah"), at least he had to urinate more, over your, pardon the pun, peon countries
Congratulations, you are the only one of the hundred people who will point this mistake out who is not redundant.
sadly, a little grammatical mistake makes any discussion on the actual topic impossible. thank you immature slashdotters!

IF that happened, they would lose another court case against their monopolistic practices. so, PLEASE do this. PLEASE
if it's good, peope will buy it. even if it's slightly shitty, people will buy it.
but if it totally obstructs those features we love, average schmoes will go to wal-mart and buy the 'Lindows' computer. economics work themselves out.have to look to the future for these cases. we all know that technology will become more and more advanced, and evetually be so cheap and readily available that not much can stop it.

thus, you'd need a large media size, such as CD size.
which would be way too bulky by that point to be acceptable.
i agree though, perfect for digital cameras. or digital video cameras. yeh, i'd use a regular CD sized disk in a protection case for a video.
