Am I the only one that reads these titles that say "A peak inside X's datacenter" and go "OMG Datacenter pics!!!!!!"? Only to be disappointed by a text article with no pics? I DEMAND MY SERVER PR0N!
I work for a very small ISP (1000-2000 customers(I don't care to give specifics)), we give what we advertise. I review my bandwidth graphs twice a day at the very least. This includes Saturdays and Sundays, etc. I understand this comment wasn't directed at ISPs like the kind I run, but I want people to understand, not ALL ISPs are horrible, lying piles of shite. We put a lot of work into keeping our customers happy.
Also to note, at home I cannot subscribe to the ISP I work for, so I use Mediacom. Ironically, I pay for 5Mbps, and I only show about 2Mbps at most bandwidth meters. Yet, on bittorrent, at any given time, I get around 950-980KB/s (7.4Mbps-7.6Mbps). Getting more bandwidth than I'm paying for?:)
This should help. Its for long exposure shots but the same concept applies. Keep in mind that your camera sensor won't always show the same noise. So you'll probably end up doing this for every shot.
Unfortunately (in the US atleast), not everyone has 52Meg DSL available to them (Or even close). The town I live in 7M is about the highest, in the town I work in 1.5M is the highest. Add to that the push for HDTV, which requires even more bandwidth and you've pretty much slaughtered any possible use of IPTV in the near future. On top of this is the fact that almost every ISP in the US oversells their bandwidth. I know my provider does. I pay for "Up to 7Mbit cable". During the day when no one is on, I can pull around 6-6.5Mbit, not too shaby. From 4PM to 11PM (I would guess this is where most people watch tv), I get 500Kbps normally, 1Mbit if I'm lucky.
Just my 2 cents.
It would be nice if Square-Enix would come out and say: "Since Sony is so confident in their machine, we upped the graphics on FF XIII. We found that the PS3 cannot handle the that level of graphics, so we had to turn them down. Sorry Sony, try again."
I agree completely. And the fact that he's 'protecting' the company that wants to sue him? WTF? I'm calling his bluff. If someone was trying to sue me for something stupid, I would advertise it to the best of my abilities. If you're gonna sue me for something stupid, I'm going to let EVERYONE know just how stupid you are.
I just got 2x 200G drives for $20 each. (Staples, evil black friday) They have 3 year warranties on them. Wonder why warranties aren't mentioned in this article at all.
Why did I get 2? I don't trust hard drives, and that 3 year warranty doesn't protect my data... but that ide raid card does!:)
it would also permit municipalities to offer their own broadband services.
Did I read this wrong? Some municipalities already offer their own broadband services. I know this because I'm "Broadband Services Coordinator" at a municipal utility. So I ask.. WTF?
I read about how these movies suck all the time. I watch these movies, and I enjoy them quite a bit. I guess I'm easily entertained. I'm sure glad I'm not like you, it must really suck to never find any good entertainment.:)
And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.
And again, the internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck.
Dear Senator Ted Stevens,
The French can figure this shit out, why can't you?
Love, rm
I am totally with the "good games". Now, I don't games as much as I used to, mostly because of the lack of time I have in my life now. But the little time I do have, I find myself trying to decide which game sucks the least. I'm not going to get into details about liking game X or thinking its better than Y. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I'm finding quite a few games that are hardly entertaining anymore. On the other hand, I've been playing the crap out of my NES/SNES rom stash. I think its time for a GPX2.
My company is currently working on this. We currently have, in development, a linux box going with Postgresql, and VMWare, win2k3 running in VMware. The reason?
Our application requires 2 things.
1: Postgresql (Performs way better on linux than windows for us)
2: IIS ((ASP.NET), we've tested mono... "it isn't there yet")
This allows us to ship linux and windows on the same box, and get the advantages of both, without shipping two boxes.
I used to work at an ISP that has atleast 3 SCSI HDD's there that have been spinning non-stop (sans power outages) since 1993. They are still in production too, which is insane. But, thats not my problem anymore.:)

MacOSX: It just works
Windows Vista: It looks like OSX, but just DOESN'T work.
YMMV

I guess I'm a rare geek then. 6'0", 180lbs. Most of the other geeks that I know personally in my area are 180-220ish as well.
At the same time, I have a wife and 2 kids, quite a ways away from the stereotypical slashdotter.

Jurisdiction. They can only sue the whole frickin United States and territories. :)
Wheee. I knew this was coming down the pipe because I used to work with one of the people working on the case.

Better look out, mother nature is going to take you to court for violating the DMCA when you reverse engineer her cancer.
No gadgets in the bed room? BORING! We have pleanty of battery operated "gadgets" in our bed room. And we both enjoy them quite a bit. >:)
I bow to you sir. I was also a Nintendo zeolot. Oh those were the days. Cuz ya know.. "Sega's graphics suck!" ;)
In honor of Sys admin day, I'm putting in my 2 weeks and going back to being a sys admin. :)
:)
No, I'm not kidding, finalized the deal last night. Ironic, eh?
But...It's a series of tubes.

Will this make him HD Jon, or Blue-Ray Jon? Ray Jon?
I can!

My mistake, it's been a long day. :)
For those of us that are used to the english system: 85.4 kph = 53.0650998 mph
I don't think I average that on my drive to work.
Oh, and for those too lazy to google: http://www.gp2x.com/
This isn't the site I originally remember, but its the same device.
