I didn't actually try one of the alternatives mentioned in this discussion. But when I look at the web sites of the different solutions, it's remarkable that only the home page of Plonevalidates as XHTHML 1.0 transitional, and uses div structures instead of tabulars. If I need a content management system one day, I'll try this one first.
If MS offers this 250K, they are actually indirectly donating 250K to the FBI. I don't know how independent the FBI is/should be (I'm not from America), but to me this doesn't seem to be a very healthy situation.
How can you blame them? MS provides the hardware, the bandwidth, and the assumes the risk of operating this chat network.
I don't blame Microsoft for locking out 3rd party clients. But I do have problems with the way they `trap' users in their closed network.
MSN Messenger is installed on almost every new computer running Microsoft Windows (My Windows Update calls it an update to the operating system, but I didn't install it). Once installed, there is no trivial way to remove it. And if it is there, why should someone use anything else?
Windows users are almost forced into MSN, and locking out 3rd party clients is locking out Linux/Unix users from the I.M. network that almost everybody uses. (The majority of the PC users runs MS Windows.)
I think that if Microsoft closes its network, it should clearly display this information when a new user registers (I doubt it does). Even better, there should be pointers to open IM networks for those who want to be able to communicate with `non-MSN people'.
(Disclaimer: I do realize this will never happen;-))
what is so damn hard about unzipping it to C:\Program Files and creating a link for the executable in the startmenu and on the desktop...
Indeed, for us, the Slashdot crowd, this is not difficult at all. But If I tell this to 90% of my friends, then they'll say that I shoud talk normal and don't use all this difficult computer science speak.
They don't know what unzipping is, they don't know how to find C:\Program Files. They don't know what an executable is, and how to find/recognize it. They don't know how to create a link to it, they even don't know what a link is. Nevetheless they aren't stupid.
As I see it, there are (were?) two problems which make the switch from I.E. towards Firebird `frightening' for modal Windows users: (1) the lack of a Windows installer, and (2) the troubles for installing e.g. a flash plugin.
I don't know whether these things are fixed in the new release, but as long as they aren't, I will recommend Mozilla as I.E. alternative instead of Firebird. It would be a pity if Firebird users switched back to I.E. because of these little problems.
I think it'd be a good idea to just set the cutoff at 18 years of age, or whatever age of adulthood is in a particular country, and make it legal to track minors.
Then I would set the cutoff at 6. Minors should develop a sense of responsability before they're adult. They should be taught to let their parents know where they are themselves. And if they want to be alone for some time, this should be possible without their parents knowing exactly where they are.
I don't think you grow responsable people if you monitor them until they're 18. What responsability is left if someone is tracking every move you make?
It will ship Windows with security precautions activated that are now left off -- for instance, a firewall program that stops Internet worms such as Blaster.
Hmmm... And which firewall program will this be? Will there be a choice, or are we heading to a similar situation as what happened to Internet Explorer on the browser front?
Here is a clickable link. Though this technique seemed effective, I'm not sure it's a good idea. What is worse, spamming people for making money, or spamming people for revenge?
It's not as easy or fast to copy DVD's as it is to copy CDs. It takes 4 hours+ to rip a DVD plus DVD costs.
That's the situation right now. But I can imagine that once copying DVD's will be as easy as copying CD's today. How will this affect the movie industry ?
There isn't such a thing as `the Belgian dark beer'. You have Westmalle triple, blue Chimay, McChouffe, dark Tongerlo, Orval, Rochefort, Leffe, Grimbergen, and many many more. And they all differ in taste and strength. I'm pretty sure there exists a dark Belgian beer which is less strong than the standard US beer. Nevertheless it is true that most of them are stronger.
Most Belgian beer isn't brewed by monks. Althoug several beers were originally brewed by monks, nowadays this isn't the case anymore. Monks are less and less common in Belgium, the beers won't disappear.
However, the world's best beers are imho Belgian indeed.
You can access ext2/3 partition using explore2fs. There is writing support too, but I think this is still in a testing phase.

It seems that McDonalds characterizes the story as pure speculation.

Yes, you're right. Mea culpa. I guess this last link was added after the story moved from `the mysterious future' to 2:31 pm. Sorry about it.
on this (in)famous story about NASA's space pen.
Here is a link. Does anybody know how legal this is?
The Xbox of course! (If you install a decent operating system)
According to grahamlee, Microsoft didn't lock out 3rd party clients, but just changed to a new (uncompatible) protocol. So nihil novi sub sole for the moment...

I'm not sure that this is what a user needs, but it is what a user expects... It is what BillG made them expect.

A lot of spam I get has the same link on it indeed:
Hotmail: your free e-mail ! Click here !For those who RTFA, here are links to the articles about retro gaming and Nintendo.
I wonder when this slashdot discussion will show up in the search results.

I think I've found one at economist.com.
Did anybody write a perl script to scramble the words this way?

Two remarks :
However, the world's best beers are imho Belgian indeed.
I'm not an expert in these things, but isn't it possible that these conversion filters become illegal because of the DMCA ?
