    Ha,

Yes, my employer knows that it's being used, and though I'm not with the same employer that I was with when FC first came out, everyone of them has had a hand in the decision process to use Fedora when applicable. It has proven to be a very capable and stable distro. As a matter of fact, when people say that it's too unstable, I'd like to know exactly what issues they actually have had with it. Cause while I have had a few occasional minor issues, I've never run across a real show-stopper using FC. Most of the time, the issues I've had are the traced back to the way it was configured when someone first set it up.

I've been a linux user since 1997 (RH4), and have worked from the Mom N Pop ISP/Hosting companies to Data Centers with thousands of servers to QA department for a company that sells very high end spam/virus mail scanning linux only products. This is where I'm at now. Admittedly, in the QA dept, we are using mostly RH3/4 with a sprinkling of the others. However, all the admin/internal servers (NFS/LDAP/DCHP/HTTP/sFTP,cfengine, etc etc) are running FC4/5

Unfortunately, I've never setup a FC server in my Mom's basement, but I DO have one in mine. ;-)

Man someone's a little whiney today....

Yes, Fedora is considered Beta. However, it's Beta in the same way that Google is Beta. I've been using Fedora since Core 1, and it has been deployed in many many production environments that I have worked in/around. Never had a problem.

Debian is nice if you have software from 1995 that needs to run, or don't need features in newer versions of software that it comes with. Or the setup and config tools that make admining a RH/FC server much easier. Ubuntu, is a great desktop, but the few times I've used it, it felt like it still needed some work. I had all the same issues with missing drivers (very few) that FC has, and Synaptic is not the installer God that all the fanboys seem to proclaim. Gentoo is even worse for production. With portage/emerge, good luck making sure that the binaries from one production server to the next are 100% the same.

I also use Puppy/DSL/IPCop, and have eval'ed quite a few more, but FC is at the core of what I do.

Yeah, I got screwed by the RH FC split too, but you know what? business is business. I adjusted, I use RH when certain apps my business needs require it, and FC when not. I even use SuSE and Ubuntu, when appropriate, and I support all linux Distros.

It makes me sad when people bash other *nix Distros... It's like calling your Mom fat and ugly. Well someone didn't think so, otherwise you wouldn't be here. Each one has it's own place, and fits a particular need. Otherwise said distro wouldn't exist.

I believe that this is a tool, like any other tool, it can be abused or used for good. I have a story to tell it's happening right now, and is causing two parent considerable grief...

First of all let me frame this story. My wife and I own a duplex, we live in one side of it and rent the other. My tenants are good hard-working lower middle class Blue collar workers. They do their very best to raise their kids (2 boys). Their youngest who just turned 16 is feeling his oats and starting to challenge his parents authority. Talking back, swearing at his parents, staying out late and sometimes not coming home at all. They are at their wits end as to what to do with him. They recently had a friend of theirs a, county sheriff, stop by and talk to them about their options. I also managed to take part of some of this conversation, and related a tory of mine.

When I was his age, I got into an argument with my mother, (I don't even remember what it was about now) feeling my oats and decided that it was a Good Idea to call her a "F*cking Bit.." I NEVER had a chance to finish that cuss, as unbeknownst to me my father had been standing behind me the whole time, and next thing I knew I was on the ground 5 feet away with my head on the other side of my shoulders. I NEVER attempted to call my parents names again as I had learned my lesson. My parents never abused me, this was the ONLY time I was EVER struck by my parents (other than being spanked occasionally when I was younger). I can count the times I was physically disciplined on 2 hands with a few fingers left over. I personally do not consider this abuse, but according to the sheriff, times have changed, and you can go to jail for this sort of "child abuse" now. It's rediculous!

Anyways back to my story, their youngest has now not come home for 4 days, they have no idea where he is, and have now reported him as a "Runaway Child". He DOES however, have a cell phone on him that his parents provided him. I have recommended getting one of the "tracking services" that are being advertised by cell phone companies now so they can find out where he is. They are currently looking into this, and I hope that they can find him.

In this case I think that GPS cell phone tracking is a good thing and an important tool that parents have at their disposal. On the other hand Government agency or private company tracking without a warrant or permission is abhorable.

Since you sound like a Gentoo Ricer to me, I just want to share my recent "emerge" experiences. I had the dubious honor of admining/updating a Gentoo system for a friend the other day. After hearing all the GFanbois going on and on about emerge, I was looking forward to "taking it for a spin" so to speak.

    Server Specs
    Dual PIII 1.4 GHz
    1GB RAM
    HW SCSI RAID 5 ARRAY

Not sexy in any sense, but not uncommon either in production environments. So after reading the Gentoo Emerge man and website I began my journey...

First thing I ran into after I did a emerge --sync && emerge update was blocking packages. So I had to unmerge the blocking packages. Repeat this a few times and I was ready to go. emerge world... Went to bed, expecting a fresh updated system... No, I get errors about needing USE flags set to properly install some of the packages. OK a little more research and reading I update /etc/make.conf with the appropriate flags. Ran emerge oneshot on the dep package, and then ran emerge world again... went to work, came home expecting a fresh updated system.... Oops missing more USE flags... Fixed the problem... and fixed another one again... So then I tried to install a so called "webapp": phpmyadmin. Oops again! I can't install it properly because the webapp-config file is not correct... It turns out that from the time the system was originally installed and when I updated it the "webapp-config" app was re-written in Python from Bash, and emerge didn't notify me that I needed to do anything regarding this file, so after MORE research I fixed that issue, and then had to look forward to etc-config'ing over 137 changed etc files.... Boy that was fun...

So almost 48 hours later I had a fresh updated Gentoo box...

My opinion is this: emerge has many of the same issues that ANY other package management system has, it solves some of the problems that RPM and DEBS have but also has many problems of its own. Plus, on older systems it takes forever to compile and update everything for a negligable speed benefit... I'll take apt-get/yum/up2date any day over emerge for real production systems.

Gentoo is probably great for desktops on boxes that have lots of glowing lights, see-through panels and Type-R stickers, but probably not so great in production...

I completely agree. Anyone with enough experience with computers knows that if you give people that are relatively new to them whether it be windows or linux, a complete hand holding . They will take advantage of you even for the smallest of things, things that you have explained 2-3 times already. I'm a patient person, and early on was taken advantage of alot like this. Now, my rule is the first time you ask me something, I'll explain it step by step or sit down with them and show them how to do it, and give URL's or notes or something to help that person out. Second time the same question is asked, I'll try to explain it a different way, use different analogies etc. If they ask me a third time, I'm like "WTF I've told you twice, why didn't you take notes? I gave you links, documents etc to help you out.", and I'll explain it again. Fourth time: RTFM

Now I may be a little "more" patient than some. When I started out with linux, I pretty much always would google, browse list archives, etc. BEFORE I would post my question, and when I did eventually post my question, I would include steps of what I have done already, the lists I have browsed, and the parts of the docs that I didn't really understand.

This technique has, 99.9% of the time, let to helpful answers, and not just responses like RTFM.

Questions from people where it is blatantly obvious they have done none of the aforementioned steps piss people off. My favorite questions to ignore are the ones where it is obvious that they haven't read the docs, and want step by step hand holding, as if it is their right as a newbie to not have to research anything, they typically go something like this: "I want to setup my webserver, I'm a newbie and just want step by step instructions, I don't have time to RTFM, or search google. I have posted this question before and all I got was RTFM, or no response. I need it done now for my job, it's an emergency! What is up with all these rude people out in linux land?"
