  1. Why do they need everyone on the new version 6? on Instant Messaging Giveaway · · Score: 1

My question is why Microsoft wants everyone on version 6 so bad, I am still using 4.7 (when not on trillian) and it does everything that I need. Why the big push to get everyone on 6? Is there some great new feature that is going to give us everything we were missing on the internet? I wonder what else this software is "giving" us besides the ability to change the background of the messanger??? just some food for thought

This is once again M$ using is dominance in the warketplace to kill competition through deceptive means. It is really sad that people will defend this large conglomerate corporation when they keep showing time and time again that all they really care about is the bottom line.. money..

THe Microsoft corporation doesn't care who they put out of work in the process or what sort of innovation and creativity that they stifle(sp?). They dont love you or your dog, don't care about your "web experience" they just want your money.

Granted they are a for profit corporation and that mean they need to make money.. But look at the cost of their means.. innovation, jobs, consumer choice, there is quite a bit more (not enough coffee to list them).

Hopefully M$ will one day change their tactics and begin to embrace the new technologies that other people create instead of holding them under the waves untill they drown in a sea of Microsoft Brand Technology(tm).

Here's my thought on the MSN site. If MSN was a real website they would try to get as many people there (and returning) as they possibly could, this would give them value with advertisers and MSN would continue to make money as an advertising/news service site. THis doesn't seem to be the case. This tactic shows that MSN is nothing more than a web tool that is being used to make people get off of competing web

browsers/Operating Systems.. You know why they are not doing this with Netscape/Mozilla.. they already got in trouble with the DOJ regarding NS and they wouldn't push that envolope again.. but opera, what can opera do without revinue.. (get the slashdot community on their cause!)

What can slashdot do you might ask?? think of it this way. With enough butterflys, you can make a hurricane.

Oh well, maybe one day Microsoft will realise that they don't need to kill competition, and they can make ALOT more money in the long run by fostering the market, instead of destroying it.

    just some thoughts....

  10. memory is a cellular event on What's Your Earliest Memory? · · Score: 2, Interesting

A couple of years ago I came across a book at a pharmacy that I was contracting for. Brain Longevity has alot of interesting facts and studies about memory and the brain in general. One of the studies that was done to prove that memory was cellular was. A group of earth worms were put in a special tray and a light would be shone on the worms and they would simultainiously recieve an electrical shock causing the worms to curl up. After a few runs of this test the worm were then ground up and fed to other worms (pretty gross eh??) now when the new worms were put in a tray and the light would shine on them (no shock this time) the worms would curl up and react just like the set of worms that would recieve the electric shock. Thus proving (in earth worms anyways) that memory is cellular. Another good quote from the book referencing the fact that we barely understood the brain of an insect. at this time if we were to know everything about our brain we would be too dumb to understand it (well, it went something like that).

Now back to the topic.. My earliest memory was from 3 years old when my uncle tried to ride his motorcycle up a set of wooden steps that went up to our front porch and colapsed the old stairs. I remember being scared that it happend which sort of leads me to why I think I remember it.

This is really a step in the right direction towards undoing the damage that Micro$oft's previous actions have caused. This also helps all consumers in the future by giving us a choice in what platform we want to run our apps on, the average consumer will not go out and install the latest version of Java. If M$ can bundle the latest .NET that is technically far superior to the M$ Java VM from windows 95, of course people are going to say that Java sucks because the average person will not understand that they are using a 8 year old version of Java... a poorly implemented version at that. If M$ was allowed their way they would be destroying the customer choice through their OS monopoly. This decision ensures that there is future compitition in the web development market. good job to Judge Motz for helping to keep the free market free.

Look at it like this: If M$ can delay the release of Project Entropa a month then they have reached their goal of the Christmas profits. A BSA audit can shut a company down for months if the company is found to be "out of compliance" while the lawyers on both sides reach a settlement. During this time guess who's game is released just in time for christmas and guess who gets released in the "weak" first quarter...
