  1. 2003 = year of drunk management on State Of Open Source In 2003 Reviewed · · Score: 0

Ok, redhat linux became fecesdora. Every other unix became SCO property. It's a shitty year for OSS in 2003.

RIght when I decided to run redhat 9 permanently, the best damn linux version ever, everything else goes down the drain. Whoopie dooo.... can't wait till 2004. When SCO partners up with M$ to destroy sun and ibm remains the same. And 8 million startups create linux distributions, and united linux goes no where because SCO is a part of it.

Ok, I bought a Sapphire atlantis ATI Radeon 9800 Pro just alittle before Christmas and it took a massive amount of effort to get everything working. These cards IMHO are excellent assuming you know what you are doing, but definitely not ready for the masses. Simple games like RTCW enemy territory, call of duty, delta force bhd, battlefield1942 all took an insane amount of tweaking and research to get working perfect.

Things to do to reach Nirvana

1.) catalyst 3.10 driver was the best there is, and I had to completely reinstall windows xp to get it working flawlessly.

2.) The key components I had to update was RAM (from generic to Kingston) and powersupply (from 300W to 600W). I know it sounds irrelevant but I cannot tell you how many mod_errors I got in games until these were updated.

3.) I now run completely open cased on BOTH SIDES! They mind as well call it ATI OVEN 9800 PRO. I still get the occasional overheat and get spotty dots on the screen if I leave my computer on 4-5 days in a roll.

4.) I disabled fast write and also the VPU feature in the catalyst software.

5.) I also reshuffled the PCI cards next to the agp slot so that the smallest cards were next to the graphic card to give it more air space.

It's a conspiracy I swear, they want you to buy DVD+R, DVD+-, DVD+-x%, DVD-XXX. They are going to change formats every two years so you have to buy new drives again and again.

The ads in U.S actually pertain to the content of the shows even if they suck. For example, I watch an NBA game, I expect commercials about sneakers and Yao Ming selling laptops etc etc.

If you have been to some other countries, their TV broadcasts are just completely off subject. Showing a rerun of Cartoons, then viagra commercial. Maybe some music karoke hour show, followed by insurance commercial about death and terrorism. It's that bad. Sport broadcasting always have lingerie and some fat chocolate commercials. It's unbelievable.

The karoke craze has been around for decades in most asian countries. Especially Hong Kong and Japan.

If they had made a sing-along game it would be a hit in asian anytime. But until it is a hot seller also in the U.S, it's not considered a real million dollar success.

I have seen many asian folks who buy on a regular basis sing-along karoke VCDs from music of their own culture. It's something going on for a long time down there. For years Americans are considered lame and gay singing karoke style. Things have changed.

  13. Sun is going down on The End of Sun's Cobalt Servers · · Score: 3, Interesting

I am finding it difficult to see Sun's position in the market more and more each year. The best thing to have happened to this company was free downloads of solaris 9 x86. It is virtually impossible to convince my manager to buy Sun anything nowadays.

For high end stuff we have AIX. It comes with LVM and other critical stuff. It has ridiculously stable support for fibre channels and just the most outstanding support.

For middle to low end we have PCs with windows and linux.

I can't seem to see where Sun (with or without their cobalt server) fits in today's market anymore.

I worry about the potential of any new software company nowadays. Personally I know 2 people who attempted to start their own business. One started a software consulting company, the other a restaurant.

The software consulting company charges thousands of dollars for any gig and the business comes WAY too slow. I am talking once a month on the best case scenario. The other person started a restaurant and makes couple thousand daily. Just on take outs alone, $30 + $30 + $50... you get the idea, it adds up fast in volume. People can't get away with not eating. They can get away with no software upgrading.

Basically if I had the money, I would start a gym, a club, a bar, a restaurant, a stripe club... anything but a software company in today's market. It's a shame to see globalization and everything IT related go so downhill.
