The filesystem world has got to be one of the most unorganized place. So unorganized I don't know how lawyers even want to deal with it.
For example sgi has xfs. xfs can be sneaked into linux. But xfs can be mounted remotely in a cluster via windows, solaris and irix. Theorectically you can do some of these things with windows filesystems too. There are so many damn loop holes, it's just a nasty place to try to come up with a straight profit if you ask me.
Back in 1990s Microsoft have numerous opportunities to jump deep into the gaming market. Specifically during the transition from 16bit (genesis/SNES) to 32 (PS1). I still have an issue somewhere of game informer with Gates on the cover. There was so much talk about M$ diving into gaming, but no consoles ever panned out accept an occasional release of age of empires.
They should have gone into the market and dominated then. Not now... with a scene packed with competitors especially sony the 8000 ton godzilla.... who was really just an 800 pound gorilla at one time.
They have been getting such a bad wrap one after another. I'll tell you from owning both ATI Radeon and Nvidia Geforce cards, that Nvidia has always been the one with the better drivers.
Owning an ATI Radeon 9800 now with so many graphical features disabled and tweaks in general, I swear I am almost better off owning a Geforce FX5900.
If you read gaming industry magazines on a regular basis, some of the PC games this year got some of the lowest rankings I have seen in a long time. In fact the games people are naming in/. are mediocre games that sucked. The REALLY bad games no one even know exists.
I am talking the review ranks are so low you'll laugh your ass off.
I was 5 inches away from trying united linux. When I saw SCO group as part of the distribution, I shut the web browser, the monitor, the computer... and threw it out the window.
Thanks to SCO, I should sue them for leading me on such a rage.
Every software company has these subscription software developers network.
Every other game is becoming subscription based. I am glad sims online is failing.
Every good radio frequency is subscription based.
Soon public bathrooms will be subscription based. The only thing that needs subscription is magazines.

The Return of S3
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
Ok, I just bought this card and it seriously took over a week to configure to get things stablize. I jumped around from the catalyst 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 3.10 before things would work decently.
I think if S3 can build a card with drivers stable on the first install... they'll have my money. From what I know the latest geforce FX5900 has the same problems. It's just mind boggling having to pay so much and still dealing with such a bad out-of-box-experience.
I am playing some of the most common games (RTCWET, battlefield 1942, call of duty) and they all took a massive amount of driver tweaks and install sequence to work right. The market is flooded with premature products if you ask me.
They have so much marketing power it's scary. Yet the products they push out on the market are no longer getting better every year.
1.) If it was not for ESPN/sega basketball, their live basketball series would still suck today. They develope 1 engine, and build upon it for half a decade.
2.) The sims online is a disaster from every angle.
3.) Battlefield 1942 is filled with technical problems but it's marketed well enough to stay alive.
EA is like big brother microsoft. They can afford to make mistakes and no one can touch them. Now that's dangerous for the video game industry.
Ok, I drive in and out of Boston all the time. Honestly the construction is the biggest government tax scam. There is no difference now, and there won't be any difference 5 years from now.
The congestion is not "getting to the city". Is people circling boston streets endless with no parking. The big dig should have spent their money building 5 or 6 gigantic parking lot. That would have made more sense.
If this city would be willing to get rid of some cow paths, we would have enough room to build anything in no time. But no... we keep everything from the 1900s. No wonder the red sox can't win. The players are all tired by the time they get to fenway.
I recently purchased an ATI radeon 9800 pro. I cannot tell you how aweful the out-of-box experience was. On the other hand I had a friend who purchased a geforce 5900 and he struggled nearly as bad.
Without a doubt, we fiddle around with drivers all the time and consider each other experts if not damn close to nirvana. Probably the only person better is the programmer who wrote the drivers.
I cannot tell you the ridiculous amount of troubleshooting we went through to get some of the most common games to stablilize so they don't crash: battlefield 1942, rtcw enemy territory, call of duty, delta force BHD. I must have bookmarked a thousand forums, and made a hundred tweaks to the driver features in the process.
It would be a miracle if the pc gaming industry exist 10 years from now at the rate consoles are progressing.
I don't know if getting fat is really the general problem with a gaming job. I know people who have permanent wrist damage from playing the game too many hours.
(The damage incorporates strictly video game and first person shooters not petting sea monkeys)
From what I researched it's missing at least 1 mode that was exclusive to the xbox even though it was released ages ago. Typical of M$ to protect their console... soon to be kicked off the market by PS2 anyways.
Mouse, on the other hand, cost a fortune on a console. It's readily available on PC and much needed for any fps.
Heh there are way too many PC games I purchased that took a ton of customization to get working properly. I just bought a ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128MB... but this was last resort sigh.
For the past year, only few games run with my video card 1.) RTCW 2.) The sims
Everything else works half assed 1.) Delta force black hawk down 2.) Battlefield 1942 3.) Americas Army 4.) Serious Sam Second Encounter 5.) RTCW enemy territory
I remember reading an article way back of a DUI event where some drunk ran over and decapitated a kid somehow. The blame was not on the alcohol content, but on Mortal Kombat. Society is crazy, not gamers.
Does /. not have any real video game news. What is all this constant marketing of gamecube and xbox games. It's like a conspiracy going on.
/. pocket /. post article

C++ programming. The ending is absolutely fabulous, it completely catches you by surprise. I don't want to spoil it.
The sequel visual C++ programming features some nasty villains too. Oh the 3rd chapter's the best. I must have read it 20 times.

I know an employee who works for this company. The new Sims, will come with a credit card swiper.
When you get the Sims: virtual casino, you can really gamble with your credit card.
When you get the Sims: mall of america, you can really buy virtual items with your credit card.
Only problem is when you earn virtual money and lottery nothing gets added to your card.

If this picture estimates to 100 GB in one 2D jpeg file, I don't want to imagine 3D porn.
I would have to sell my car to afford enough hard disk space. Ouch.
$35000 a year in tuition. MIT has no excuse to do anything overseas.
At this cost they should ship India folks over here to the U.S. and provide free palak paneer while they work on their open courseware.

nevermind go back to your SCO bashing.

So we can't use master/slave, and force the entire industry to change standard names.
They should shut down IBM since they supported the NAZIs way back.
They should also bring down Microsoft, because Bill Gates (William Gates III) in DOS Ascii code sums up to some satanic number.
They definitely need to bring down Dell, cause it rhymes with Hell.
I lost slashdot for a day. I almost had to commit a suicide to relieve the pain.
