  1. The Good ole days... on Heart of the Net · · Score: 1

Was back in the 90s. This was a time when I played Quake1 with friends over 56k, chatted, got into trouble, and owner of my ISP was my friend. This was the day when you could hack Quake, and find the IP of the luser running the bot, and everyone would DOS him off the server. :)

This was the time when IRC was 'the' shit, and everyone sat in the channel for a week without leaving, or being disconnected. This was the time before DSL/Cable, and being able to have T1 bandwidth was a DREAM, and gave you a sense of power on the net.

Now. AOL/TW/Carter/Rogers ALL provider's backbones are bought from the Bells right? Would it not be the Bells' fought for charging such high rates to the companys that use them? Plus Cable/DSL companys have to make money on the side!!!

Im not defending the Cable/DSL companys, and I highly disagree with what they are doing since I know they can afford it, and just want more money from us.

I fear my ISP will do this since I transfer maybe a gig in 4 days from my server (Telocity). I think $50 is enough. I wouln't pay anymore since I have more DSL choices that provide a static IP.
Not only that but my contract doesn't say anything about bandwidth usage, and for them to try to stick that on me would be a breach of contract and they would be subject to appear in court for a settlement.

This all needs to come to an end. The Bells need to wise up, and so do the Cable/DSL companys.

He is a man that has the ability to 'think' his shots. This guy can be dead accurate every time, just by thinking of where to shoot, instead of having to rely on hand-eye response times.

Since this happened with Nvidia vs. 3Dfx, this put Nvidia in a sort of 'monopoly position'. Which means that they now have most of the 3D market in terms of which gamers are concerned. This would give M$ even more leverage with these patents, and would ultimatly FORCE gamers that use their OS to run DirecX, or whatever they call it.

On a personal note (Moderators: This last paragraph is my 2 cents, and should be ignored when moderating, just my little rant.) I use 3Dfx becuase I CHOOSE to. I run Web/Ftp/SMTP/DNS, all from my server there that uses NAT, with a static ip, and it has my domain pointed to it.

I can't complain at the moment, and I don't think they would cap the bandwidth because I know there would be a LOT of noise made about it. I can't go with an ISP that doesn't provide me with 2 things. Those 2 things are 1. A static ip, and 2. No less than 256k up/1500k down.

I get this for $50 a month under no contract. If they changed, then I would call them, shout, bitch, and complain, and then find their top competitor, and sign up with them (if they fit my requirements).

The only problem ive had with Telocity was the quality of service. Used to the connection would drop 1-3 times a day, and it would be every day, and sometimes I would get a weird packet loss for no reason from around 6:00-11:00pm. But now, I don't get that, and have had a strait 6 day uptime on my connection (Not counting a power outage in which the router isn't connected to my server's UPS). Will you help prevent Microsoft from doing this kinds of things? For example: Prevent Microsoft from forcing it's users to sign up for their .NET project, or restrain Microsoft from making products that sends private information back to them, in a case that would violate the privacy of it's user?

Would you also help decide wether or not Microsoft should patent method X for doing this or that, or prevent them from buying a company, or new technology if they like it?

One thing I would like to see happen is that Microsoft be prevented from entering new markets. One example was their release of the X-Box, to attempt compete with PS2 & the GameCube, for the soul purpose of gaining market share, and monopolizing the game market. Another is their attempt in the DVD market. This article was posted yesterday, here on Slashdot. I am not familiar with the details.
