Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles requires a GBA for each player unless you are in 1 player mode (which I've heard sucks).

The reason that FF:CC requires a GBA for each player is that due to the four-person cooperative play, each player needs his or her own screen to view the map, use items, equip armor, etc. without disrupting the entire game. If it were all done without GBAs, then in the middle of an intense battle when one person needs to change weaponry, the whole team would have to wait as that person flips through menus on the TV screen. That's why it's necessary to have a GBA for each player.

Of course, Nintendo will benefit from this as there may be some people who buy a GBA to play FF:CC with friends. However, I don't think that's why they set up connectivity this way. Game Boy Advances have been selling in record numbers since their release date. Nintendo is not worried about pushing more GBAs.

  7. 8. Video games are art. Video games are not art. on Most Dubious Videogame Claims Explored · · Score: 1
These claims go together because both confuse artistic expression with the medium. Are movies art? The question is, "Is the Godfather art?" or "Is Ace Ventura: Pet Detective art?" It's like asking whether painting is art. If you are painting the Mona Lisa sure, it's art. If you are painting your house, maybe not.

There are some good reasons to blur the line between media and art. It helps raise the credibility of the entire medium. But in more precise terms, media covey expression and emotion, ideas and information. What is commuinicated may, or may not, be artistic.
This is an interesting statement, and I think it makes sense. However, it brings up the question of whether video games (or movies) can be considered art and protected as such. I think if all 'art', be it the Sistine Chapel or The Last Supper painted with human feces, is protected under that broad category, then the same should apply to movies and video games. Just my two cents.

Well first of all, I should probably mention to everyone that I've never done debate before. I'm in high school and still learning the ropes. But SURTASS has a range of 300 miles. The Navy claims that at one kilometer away, the impact of SURTASS on marine life is negligible. However this is assuming that they'll see any whales/dolphins/etc. from 1km away and be cautious with their sonar.

  14. Re:Possibly... on Deep Sea Monster Baffles Scientists · · Score: 4, Informative

The U.S. Navy is testing a new high-powered sonar system. Perhaps it is killing ocean animals whose existence we are (previously) unaware of?

Do invertebrates have ears? I don't know the answer, but I do know quite a good deal about the U.S. Navy's sonar program (called SURTASS or sometimes SURTASS LFA) as I just spent the past week researching it for a debate tournament.

SURTASS LFA (Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System, Low Frequency Active) sends out sonar pings to search for mines, submarines, and the like at around 180 dB, though it can get louder or quieter than that. It does indeed cause severe damage to marine life, particularly whales and dolphins, who communicate with sonar and therefore are susceptible to this type of sonar. It causes severe acoustic trauma and sometimes bleeding around the ears and even death. It is also known to cause strandings of whales...

The reason I bring this up is that if any sea creature doesn't have ears/can't hear sound/whatever, they are immune to this type of sonar. However, if they do have ears, they can be quite vulnerable to it. Do any invertebrates have ears? Do squid? This could be related.

According to this, Mother 3 is planned to be released on the Game Boy Advance. I think that would indicate that it would be a direct sequel to Earthbound, rather than an entirely new Mother game, due to the graphics of GBA.

Mother 3, when it was being developed for N64, was to be a 3D title. You can see screenshots of it here. It was to be a new entry in the Mother series, quite different from Earthbound (Mother 2).

However, due to the fact that GBA can't do true 3D (yet) but rather tends to imitate the graphical style of SNES-era games, I think Mother 3 might be a more direct sequel to Earthbound, as was hinted in Earthbound itself.

...Yeah, kind of off-topic, but I thought I'd supply some information.

The registration does not submit any kind of demographics and cannot track you. You submit the unique ID that is printed on your GP32 and they send you GP32 software (the program is called FreeLoader) that allows you to run homebrew software. There is plenty of freeware for the device that doesn't require the FreeLoader; however, most amateur software does need it.

My point is, it's very unobtrusive. Just fire off an email to Gamepark containing the ID, and they send you the software back. You put the software on your GP32, not your PC, so there's no monitoring or anything.
