Very true. The business model of monetizing via (often poorly) targeted advertising is a net negative for society.

It is almost the worst system you can design. You often get poorly targeted advertisements or exceptionally targeted content that stokes outrage. Then, on top of that, the advertising system provides a mechanism for malicious content to execute on your browser.

  4. One can make that argument about any entertainment activity. Some people enjoy watching eSports, which seems absolutely boring to me. Other people enjoy opera. I don't see a problem having a diversity of entertainment options.

The issue for me is using tax dollars or issuing municipal bonds to subsidize profit-making sports teams. They should go to the corporate bond market if they need money.

  5. It will be interesting to see how they end up funding the change given the other large obligations that the city and county have. In particular they are facing a steep pension funding shortfall. Raising taxes will probably increase the rate of high earners leaving the area. They could try to reduce pension benefits, but I'm not sure how much traction that will get. I guess there is always the bond market...

I hope you are not a financial analyst. You made two errors in your profit analysis. First the 25 billion is the development cost and does not include production costs. A large part of the revenue from a sale goes to covering the cost of production. Second, it is unlikely that the A380 ever sold at list price. Over the life the program, Airbus took a loss on production--they got to having "digestible losses" and were forecasting being revenue positive on production costs. They did not achieve any positive return on their investment

Some fees go to fund specific activities (via permanent accounts) or to mandatory expenditures. That is usually due to the fact that there is an SLA and therefore they are providing connectivity at a guaranteed level. The marginal higher cost associated with a SLA is usually negligible compared to the revenue being generated.
