I just built an Intel NUC BOXNUC6CAYH for roughly $330 with the same processor, 8GB of RAM, a 500GB SSD, but most importantly, a full HDMI 2.0 port with 4K @ 60HZ support without needing a dongle (video decoding at 4K is still a bit lacking though). When the new Mintbox comes out this summer, it will be facing some stiff competition as Intel will have released its Gemini Lake platform based NUCs which benchmarks are showing to be much snappier than the current Apollo Lake ones. If you want to support the Linux Mint devs, pick up the new Mintbox, but otherwise you can buy a NUC now or a much faster NUC this summer.
Via an easy Google or even Live search, the article submitter could have found out that Windows Live supports Firefox in addition to Internet Explorer 6 and 7 Beta.
It's going to take a combination of efforts similar to this and advanced heuristics to reduce the threat of rootkits. Solutions like Gamma will need eat a lot of R&D money as they struggle to counter holes that rootkits exploit. It's nice to see DARPA funding a project like this.
GarageBand - FruityLoops Express at $50. iPhoto - Google's Picassa @ $FREE. iDVD and iMovie HD - Nero Ultra Edition @ $70 (bundled for free with a lot of DVD burners and with other components). iWeb - Various free HTML editors.
I own and love my Powerbook. But, one cannot discount software available for the Windows world.
The EULA does not mention laptops or anything similar to laptops (closest would be handtops but even the tiniest PC computers by Sharp and Sony are still called "sub-notebooks").
Argh, notice it is an IIS server. And, notice that they offer free email. Put the two together. Someone registered the username "root" apparently. Tricksy.
Too bad the shadows are hard and look unrealistic. You can especially notice the terrible shadows through fences (which are just textures). I'll wait for Unreal 3 to come out... and a Geforce9000 GT Ultra Pro with 8 GB of DDR5.
Doesn't seem to have normal mapping (bump mapping and its cousins) or portal rendering (and all of its cousins). This doesn't make the engine very modern. It also seems to be lacking in the shaders department.
However, it is open source so stay tuned in the future!
How much is RealNetworks losing money from each song they sell? The article mentions an analyst saying they will be losing money. How much of the $0.99 does Apple pay out to the record industry?
Check out Doom 3's physics engine. It is terrible. I shot a laptop into a corner and it stayed in midair for about 3 seconds before flying out at an immense speed. Make a barrel explode and the objects around it are barely affected.
I am willing to bet in the next generation of game engines, Unreal is going to be the engine all the modders flock to. Have you seen the latest Unreal 3 engine demos with the demonstration of the new Karma physics engine? It is absolutely beautiful. Karma itself may even be better than Havok.
And I won't speak for Half-Life 2 as that is nowhere to be seen in complete form.
I tried Hare and it never seemed to make a difference at all. It did have many interesting options, though.
The only program that ever seemed to speed anything up was O&O Defrag (oo-software.com) who have a background defragger. Leave your computer, and the defrag turns on. When you come back, it is off in anywhere from instantly to a minute. The program also has a nice complete defragger to boot.
Use QuickTime Alternative (google it) through the included Media Player Classic. With Media Player Classic you can do full-screen DirectX 9 accelerated QuickTime video without all the cruft that the QuickTime player brings with it.
Media Player Classic does suck for viewing.ASFs and.WMVs unfortunately.
The funny thing is the article submitter's URL links to a site with porn made for mobile phones. The article mentions how Vodaphone blocks porn websites from being displayed on mobile phones unless the user has the block removed.
No matter what version of Windows Media Player you install, mplayer2.exe will always be there waiting for you to enjoy a cheap, light-weight, DRM-free experience.

The XBox 360 can use any USB HID device as long as the title supports it. Unfortunately...

There have been a few Windows images floating around with trojans and the such preloaded.

They also offer free email. More than likely someone created an account called "root".

Unfortunately, each one of the students had to try AOL and refer 5 of their friends first.
:)
Ok, that was a bad one.
Looks more like Google found forums where people were swapping credit card numbers.
From the article:
Next in the Centrino is its Wi-Fi ability. Currently, Centrino makes use of the 802.11b standard. In Sonoma, that's being upgraded to 802.11g.
The author fails to note that Intel has already released the Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG (802.11g) and that it is a Centrino component.
My laptop has one from the factory and is badged "Centrino."

Are you some kinda robot? I wish I could reverse MD5 hashes back into data in my head! :P
Uh... UDP packets to TCP Port 1? Am I missing something here?
My cell phone (running on 900 MHz) has interferred with my CRT more than any 900 MHz cordless phone.

WMP 6.4.x is still available as a part of Windows. Start --> Run --> mplayer2.exe

Works fine for me using Windows XP Professional.
