Does Mars have an ionosphere protecting it from solar radiation? I was taught in school that that is one of the reasons Earth can sustain life, because most of the radiation from the sun is stopped from hitting the surface by the magnetic field of the Earth. If Mars does not have a sufficient ionosphere, is there any hope? can buildings keep their occupants safe from the radiation?
I think it would be possible (well, possible compared to the things this thread is talking about:) ) to have a source of crap matter that the transporter could use to re-assemble the image of whatever object you are trying to download. This would make it possible to have copies of any object available for download.
The only problem with that is, what happens if most of the people in the school work hard and do well? A system like you had mentioned would punish schools that had a majority of the people working hard. (Yes i know it sounds sappy, but think of this seriously)
My thoughts were that music organizations remember what happened when Napster was shut down: Like a hydra, cutting off Napster's head spawned dozens of other file-swapping programs, making their attempts at stopping music swappers even harder than beore. Also, all the money spent on suing Napster really diddnt get them anywhere, as new file swap programs spawn up as quickly as old ones die.
Ethically, the diffrerence is that when you twiddle with your directTV box to get extra channels you steal a service that you haven't paid for. With printers, (or the Xbox code trying to run Linux) you are not stealing anything.
I think the difference between cracking xbox to run Linux and using descramblers to get premium channels on TV illegally is that with the latter, you are stealing a service.
The problem is the same as with the geodisic dome, that though it may be the most space-efficient, the kind of area you would put it in (a desk, most likely) is rectangular and therefore the space in the corners around the sphere is mostly wasted anyway.
Actually, I would argue that payola and indimidation rackets cost the RIAA more money than piracy, but they probably write them off as business expenses anyway.
No, you mean that payola and intimidation MAKE the riaa more money.
Not to be a zealot, this is an honest question: Why dont they open-source their linux drivers? They are giving them away for free anyway, and i would think it could only increase the attraction to their products for some ppl. I can't think of any reason why not to.
Yes, i have used the last 3 or 4 versions of the linux nvidia drivers without any crashes on my geforce3ti500 athlon1900 system. I dont know where this bad reputation comes from.
Wasn't there just a slashdot article saying that Microsoft lost money in every department except for Windows and Office?

this mentions it too
so I dont think that MS buying them will make them profitable.
The problem with lossy compression for these communities is that if I take a concert on CD and rip and encode it in Ogg, or Mp3, it gets *slightly* worse quality. If someone then downloads this from me, burns it, then trades it, the quality gets worse and worse for every generation it is encoded in. (I dont know how bad this can be for high bitrates but it is *terrible* at 128 after 2-3 generations.

Perhaps they dont stand behind anything because they are at least pretending to be a somewhat objective NEWS site and not a fanboy site?
i heard that things like this just tell you to contact a company pretending to be a reviewer or company thinking about buying large quantities or something like that, and convince them to send you free stuff.
Yes we all know microsoft bashing is bad, but this really is news, its something people should know, and there are plenty of open-source security alerts published on/.

I thought Microsoft already hired all the goons?
Several bands allow, even encourage copying and trading of live concerts, most notably the Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews, and Phish.
How often do the creators of viruses and worms get caught? The only one i ever heard of was David Smith (VicodinES) who wrote the Melissa virus.

Everyone knows you cant hack Linux! :P

We need a distributed processing network like seti@home! call it xbox@home?

I doubt you have the source NVIDIA drivers as they are closed source, and this is the reason they are not included with RH8
What reason do we have to go back to the moon? Please dont say to poplulate it yet.
