I just hasn't been the same since they started selling pre-made capacitors. Hell, you can hardly find galena and cat's whiskers anymore! Why, in my day we didn't even have coaxial cable; you licked your fingers and stuck'em in the spark gap to make an antenna, and that's the way we liked it!
Maybe I missed something but how did this rate interesting? That sound more like a good way of getting rf burns. Even the low power used in 27MHz cb can be enough to give a painfull burn.
Though in some cases making your own capacitors and inductors is not as silly as it sounds. When building matching circuits for antennas or in some cases high voltage stuff building your own components can be an easy way of getting suitable component values with a high enough voltage rating. For the capacitors I use 2 double sided circuit board that has not been etched yet or short sections of coax. With the coax just keep in mind it has inductance as well as capacitance. For inductors and transformers a suitable guage wire for the application.
Where I find sms usefull is if my wife is on town and we needed something (example some groceries). She gets back to her car to come home and turns on her phone. Gets the sms and if she it near a suitable shop she buys what is needed.
Beats driving about 3/4 of an hour just to buy a loaf of bread.
That's nice, good luck to the both of you. Could you please give me a few pointers on how to achieve this. My wife care's for me, except for the developer part, she appear to believe it interferes with our social life and keeps me from giving her the attention she deserves. I'm afraid I'll have to start keeping my computer in a locked room lest it'll be the victim of a jealousey murder:)
I found a way out of this problem. It cost a few extra dollars when I built my machine. I bought 2 of every item and put together a machine the same specs as mine. Saved me a lot of arguements espesically when gaming.
I am using version 0.9.4 and there are no.css files in my profile. I don't want a newer version was the last version that worked with my broker and banking.
I am on dial up. The plans I have availible to me are either limited time or limited download. So far I have not had any trouble finding what I want by going to a non flash site. It it was sensible and no ads maybe.
So again you make the "consumers are dumb" argument. If Windows + Office cost $2000, I bet a LOT more companies would be using Linux/OpenOffice.
Last time I looked in local retail store in Toowoomba/Australia it showed windows xp at $460 and a full copy of office xp pro at $1300. So yes in some cases it is already getting close to $2000 for windows + office then easily another $1000 - $2000 for the pc depending on the hardware you want. Remeber Australain prices before you complain the prices are about twice what they should be.
Some business dont' want to change from from windows because that are convinced that by paying for windows they will have a better product than something that can get for free. The free bit even includes all the support they would want being free. Some people think that Linux/Openoffice does not the same monetry value to it so it can not be as good. There is also the fear of documents not being compatible.
The uni that I last worked at had popup messages being sent to people machines when print jobs had completed. I do the same on the network that I currently administer.
With large print jobs it saves having to guess how long they might take. Especially when the printer is in a different room.
As far as using this message service for spam I put it up there with using sms to send spam to my mobile phone.
My wife has just started studying as post grad. She had a 2500 work review to write. For her own documents she was using open office. Did what she wanted when she wanted. Even found some things easier when using open office. She inisited on using word to type the review just in case there was some incompatability when she sent the lecturer the final.doc file. This is after she had found the types of documents she does are the same under either editor.
My mother runs her own business. She would rather pay for the software instead of using the free alternative because she is convinced that the software you pay money for is better.
A lot of things I do beieve you get what you pay for but software can be an exception. People don't realize this.
They feel better handing over money or there is just enough uncertainty that they will go with the commercial product just to be on the safe side.
A person coming from windows might not see any piont in the client/server model. I like the looks on people faces when I try explaining that the underlying windowing system and the desktop are 2 separte entities and don't even have to be on the same machine. They can not understand it.
I know people that use both linux and solaris everyday. They find this very usefull. These people do see a point in this model. To those that use and like it it makes sense now in 2002 not just as in 1984 as you said.
To play unreal using the ut engine is more of making a few changes to the ini file for ut.
It is worth it. Using verison 436 of the engine instead of 226 make unreal a lot smoother. If you also use the ut weapons the monster don't stand a chance.
Mine is on a redhat 6.2 box. Installed the ghostscript that was on the cd, added the printer definition for lpd and it worked first go.
We bought the Samsung to replace a Canon bubblejet. Got sick of having to buy more ink and or a print head everytime the printer stood for any length of time unused.
Our house is a mixture of 240V and 24V DC. The 24V is from the battereries and solar panels. We do have a 24V rail through the house. For the lights and any thing else that runs at that volatge it is quite usefull.
I have no way of knowing what speed your net connection is; for all I know you're connecting to the Internet via packet ham radio, and I might inadvertently swamp your feed by asking if you serve http? My actions would not be malicious, but you'd never know that from the effect you see.
Under normal cirumstance you would not be able to do this anyway. At least in Australia the amateur part of the internet 44/8 is kept separate from the rest of the internet. By doing this you are doing something dodgy or someone needs to check out the firewall configuration to stop the traffic appearing on the 44 network.
When you decided to connect to the internet, you decided to offer a set of services. Why should you expect anyone else to not make use of those services. (Is that even what you want?)
When I connect to the internet I never decided to offer any services and I don't. No-one has any reason to sending unsolicitated packets my way.
Some of the HOWTOs assume a certain level of understanding of the topic. If a person does not have that level of understanding the HOWTO or README will not help them. It will only confuse them even more.
At times people will need their hand held will doing something new with linux. Just telling them to RTFM won't acomplish anything.
Though you will also find the truely lazy that when you give them the pages and paragraph of an example that does exactly what they want, that person will still expect you to do it for them.
I followed the link towards the bottom of the ms/linux comaprison where it says ms makes a better web server platform. The benchmark they are quoting is over 1 1/2 years old and show that the ms based system had faster hardware.
Run your operating system on faster hardware then claim it is faster than the opposition. One way to get benchmarks in your favour.
If you downloaded all of the rpms into a single directory all you need is the command rpm *.rpm
That will install every rpm that is in the current directory after detemining the correct order to install them.
Probably where it says spark gap. That gets me thinking of a spark gap transmittor. Thats not a crystal radio set.

I am with a different ISP in Australia. That is more than what I am paying for my dialup with no quota.

With gcc when using -O2 and up -fexpensive-optimzations is automatically turned on
Try using gcc -v -Q -O2 a.c to see what options are turned on. The file a.c has to exist.

The parent to you post was not talking about IIS. He/she/it was talking about IE. I believe a slightly different product.

Trying checkinstall now and it is looking promising.

no reboot needed

ftp.redhat.com
Also in the mirror site I that I use to get my iso images from. mirror.aarnet.edu.au
2 hours to compile X
2 houre for kdelibs
4 hours for kdebase
another 2 hours for mozilla
and so on. 10 hours just for 4 packages.
Or 1/2 hour to install the latest RedHat. Gentoo is not the answer for eveyone.
Aiken.
