    But what is the side effect of getting the pop up showed into your face ? I agree, X10 is well known even by me and I recall their advertising. But *due* to that advertising I would never buy a camera from them even if they were the only one to sell one. And if somebody ask me my thougth about the camera I would give them an extremly negative opinion.

    Compare that with a "normal" advertising which is only merely annoying...

    If you click on a link it does not display what you request immediatly. In reality they display their advertising on the main window where you clicked the link. And the link you just requested is displayed on a pop up ! The result being, if you blobk pop up you never get what you requested, only the advertising. This is really more than annoying I only saw that once and never came back on the page...

    Bombing civilian facility whatever the reson is wrong, and "ending the war quicker" is a terribly wrong one. Soldier are paid/engaged to kill each other in their nation's name. Killing civilian are wrong on so many side. Imagine a bit like a cops killing criminal's family to make thenm surrender quicker (although the comparison is quite not right as cop are paid to enforce law, not to be killed or kill others but you get the drift here). Gas Chamber were a terrible Crime. But so was firing V1 & V2 and so was atomic bombardement or conventionnal city bomb-razing. The only difference in those crime is that the victorious side deicided it was justified to kill so many civilian to force a surrender (and by the way this proved false as with or without Dresden bombardement , war ended only with berlin being invaded by both army and Hitler suiciding. One can argue that Dresden bombardement was a gratuitious crime here).

    First YOu HELPED defeat an army (German one) but you did nto defeat comunism. It felt apart 50+ years after WW2 due to economical reason and mostly inter reason. nothing to do with the US.

    THEN AGAIN let us see how the US did against NON-conventional warfare. That is guerilla like. Like Vietnam. Or should I remind you how a superior warfare army like Russia did against the Afghan and their guerilla warfare ? Or german army against Partisan in various country ?

    Frankly I am wondering about moderation here. Because your post is modded Insightful +5 whereas it should be -5 overrated or -5 uninformational.

    Go into the street. Talk to the younger people for one. Ask them : do you want WMA, AAC, or Mp3. Chance are they know what MP3 is, buit not the 2 other. Oh, they might have heard of Itune, but hey, it is too expensive for anybody with income like student (25 and lower year old).

    So yes maybe WMA+AAC have a 100% legal market of (made up number) 20 million people world wide, but MP3 has the illegal market in 95% of the country of the world and a market share of 50 times more people.

    What people wants is cheap music which they want to copy and use wherever they want. So to take your anology (which is correct, betamax mostly lost due to not matching customer wishes) then who will win ? WMA ? AAC ? Or simply MP3 because the difference of quality and usability in comparison to the two other is enorm ??

    In PERFECT condition, with 4 speaker, with a calm environnement, AAC and WMA are equal to each other and superior to MP3. But with a walkman, a medium/cheap headphone (like msot people have) and normal city sound environement the quality is so that all format are equal in real condition (noise!). So frankly, I'll let you all go to AAC and WMA, and like someboday said (www.penny-arcade.com) I will keep a wad of cash and a nice mp3 player, and let you use Itune or whatever WMA/AAC player with a far lighter on the money side...

    If you and other purport it having a meaning then you should come forward with it. Unless you have compelling evidence, thern what you are presenting is no more no less than wishfull thinking or belief.

    Indeed right now it isn't prooved at all that this manuscript has any meaning (encrypted or not) and a researcher prooved that you can reproduce most of the feature of the manuscript by using an encryption technic born a few year earlier. Furthermore the person selling it to the first known possessor was a forger. Yes not all feature are repdroduced. But this is a step forward.

    The burden of proof is with you and "Then again, there's no real way of knowing." isn't an answer. At least none a scientific and a person interresed into knowing moer hold for enough. And, yes "Voynich manuscript.     You might have included a lot of link making people see your post as informative, but frankly it isn't especially your dubious use of Occam's Razor (The explanation needing the LESS number of new entity is the most probable). Sorry but to purport that the manuscript hold meaning is having one unknown new entity (from where that language come ?) more than purporting that using the clever trick aforementionned (available at that time) which hold no unknown new entity.

    My final point is, Occam's razor only say you what is the most likely explanation. NOT WHAT IS THE CORRECT ONE.

    The post it answer to marked as "informative" or "insightful" isn't informative or insightful and completly misudnerstood science or scientific theory (aka : where lie the burden of proof). Whereas the parent hit it the nail over the head and to boot it up add also information on popular belief which turn out wrong (earth's form being well known).

    But I think between commercial and normal program there is a single frame of color (a blue frame IIRC) and some other visual info which we do not see but a chip can detect. Now this was some year ago so this might not be either the case today , or even the caser in US.

    Can you really stop people thinking ??? Do you really take the rest of the world that retarded that no other physicist than the US could come up with the "recept" ? If you read the article you might see that *FOUR* nation came up *INDEPENDANTLY* onto the recept.

    Frankly once you know this *IS* feasible, as a physicist then you can come up with a solution. that then the engineereer can work upon and come up with an effective device.

    Secrety is worthless in nuclear weapon run. Only experience and engineering is somethign worth.

    As the article author I wish US , France , Russia and China would have worked together on stoping nuclear proliferation thru treaty , because as we may now observe every country which have money to spend on engineering can get the bomb (Pakistan, India, N-K maybe and whoever else).

    So the French army fighted only a few months (mainly Spring 1940) but had 2/3 of the whole casualties of the US for the whole war (Pacific included).

    The myth of French blind surrendering was a legend born from at end of the disaster, when fron lines collapsed, Germans were everywhere and everything was lost, and from the following pro-Germans government of Petain, who said that the causes of the disaster were lazyness and a lack of will.

    The causes of the defeat (the worst in our history) are more in the way the Germans organized their army than everything else.

    One can argue that the US did put Saddam Hussein in place anyway, so let us only see at the source of all our problem and who put dictator in place in the last 20 years in soith america, Africa and east. Frankly I do not think you wouldlike the blame game that much.The reason is simple the US as having more power militaristcaly simply had its hands in more dirty things. It is simply a Question of financial. I do not think the other country are more innocent and they would probably have done the same with the same money at disposition. Just do not start the blame game now because you aren't in position for that.

    As far as I can tell the 3 top conncurent (lufthansa, Air France and British Airways) are running without any subsidide. In the case of LH since about 12+ years or so. In the case of Air france the company is in the govt hand *BUT* it is run as a beneficit making company (aka: without subside). As far as I can tell due to the air liberalisation and EU law anyway, you can't subside a company anymore. That is why LH, AF, and BA were so angry at the $$$ the US gave in mass to US airlines, it looked very much like subside (and still does from this side of Atlantic).

    Remmember Hitler & germany in 1937-1940 ? they had plenty of Strength. I am pretty sure nobody repected them really. but feared yes. Remmember Staline and the purge ? He had plenty of strength too. Are you respecting him ? Do you think the russian people at large are/were respecting him ?


    Ther word you search for strength is NOT repsect. Respect comes from admiting the weak point and strong point of the other and admiting for a certain admiration of those point.

    US is not respected. US 15 years ago might be. But thanks to a certain ... External politic and some pinch of bullying now the US is not respected. It is FEARED for its strength. See the two example above.

    Fear and respect are quite not the same things, even if both lead you where you want to go. But remmember this : nothing is eternal. You recolt what you seed. If you think what is seeding right now the US is good, well good to you. I personally fear my kids will have to live "interresting years".

    I do not have the web page here but somebody can certainly search in slashdot and find it. How to detect it ? The guys which made the thesis/program show that even if the lowest bits seems random, in reality if you take only red / blue or green component you see "forms" appears. And thus on steganographied image you see those form disappear, whereas on non stenographied they appear. Note that you can avoid that. So people using some of those program think they are safe, but instead a third party can show that they are exchanging secre. And knowing you are sending something hidden in some case can put you in a bad position. Even in the US.

    As it was said time over and over here,
    The Problem is that if somebody menace at pinpoint you can give a password or a pin and they will go on statisfied. You loose money but after you can change the in or apssword and that's it.

    With biometric you CANNOT change those data. Meaning once you are compromised this is over. For ever.

    Furthermore criminal aren't exactly known to be Sissy which would repugn or be afraid of , let us say, chopping a handor an arm. Or getting an eye out of that socket. Even worst it was proved that for many system with caoutchouc , rubber or high res photo scan , you can foolsome of those system. And I bet that you could hack you way thru if you have physical access like any password system.

    The only way to go would be a DOUBLE system. password *and* biometric. Biometric cannot replace the password system with more security. On the contrary it has too many disadvantage.

    So what is my point ? Seeing biometric as more than an extension of the password system will bring a lot of problem as well as a false sense of security. And a false sense of security is far worst than anything weak security.

    But only governement do have the power to destroye satellite, with all the tech that it supposes (balistic missiles). One call that space warfare. As far as I can tell when the satellitte is in splitter or going down burning toward the ground i would call that pretty much a strong ban/control. Furthermore as far as I know most governement ban citizen to send their own satellite. You have to ask permission to governement agency (NASA, EU etc...).

    Most of the problem France (and accessory germany with castor Transport) have is because of the not-in-my-backyard problem : exactly the same problem as open-air trash discharge. People do not want those in their region because it 1) lower tourism 2) lower property value 3) make some firm think twice before coming.     ... That America will never be a dictature because people would oppose any attempt to hijack the governement for evil purpose. People would revolt and do barricade. Thus there will be pax America forever.

    To which I responded, look at the german example. Look at how Hitler organised its own turf and slowly took over the Wehrmach republic. I think any democracy is weak to such type of hijack. Especially if it is done carefully and slowly over the time of years. And call me paranoid but i think this is what is happening with a very carefull way here :
    * First terrorist loose all right
    * then police is given incredible right over citizen
    * then law/politic is made so that nearly everybody can be accused of a crime.
    * somebody , preferably an external group to which nobody in the country identify glady (in our case taliban and Hussein) is made as the arch-enemy
    * it begins to be seen as a big crime to be anti patriotic especially when it touch the above subject
    * Add the above together and see another step toward erosion of individual right by AGAIN giving more power to police.
    * People start to disappear or be imprisonned without right. At first criminal. Then normal citizen.
    * By that point it begins to be too late. Either people react or are imprisonned in the "Patriotic" discourse and can't think straigth anymore.
