    That was my thoughts exactly, Thats why I think *BSD's and Linux are so stable, not just the foundation but there is no stock holders screaming for a release date "its ready, when its ready" is great!

    If they (MS) take thier time this Longhorn release could possibly compete with linux. I'm only half joking about that cause free software seems to grow much more quickly.

    Hmm, I'm not sure I like the idea of distributing
    linux alongside things like AOL, MSN and 50,000
    other types of cd's people immediatly dismiss as
    junk.

    besides what happens when someone pop's in the cd
    and fdisks the hard drive? Not what I'd call
    a good first impression

    Note to slashdot, you said wanted to get in on the media frenzy so please show us you're more responsible than them by asking the real questions we need answered, no Funnys, no 'do you use gnome' I'm from California and we're on hanging by a thread here, this is very serious business to some of us and not just something to get modpoints with.

    Sigh, whatever Distro can upgrade the entire OS (in place!) with a single command: emerge -u world.

    redhat: apt-get dist-upgrade
    debian: apt-get dist-upgrade
    yum: yum update

    I upgraded from Redhat9 to the new beta this way.

    Has anyone tried Earthstation5?

    supports SSL, Proxys, tunneling of UDP though port 80 and some other goodies to hide from ISP's, RIAA, etc?

    I've downloaded and tried it and was quite happy with it. You take a speed hit for your privacy but when the RIAA is screaming bloody murder it might be the only alternitive. Now all we have to do is e-mail them like made to get it ported to other OS's!

    This is not a Mac specific problem, Yahoo doesn't support real java, they use MS virtual machine. Alot of people have been annoyed at this for a long time. I find it suprising no good coders have taken a crack at it.

    Note: don't tell me to code it myself unless you want it in perl or bash ;)

    Wouldn't it be nice if there was a P2P application that had support for SSL, Proxy's and sets tunneling to prevent ISP's from blocking it?
    well thats what the link is. It is still in beta and only available for windows so lets E-mail them about porting it. Or maybe one of you sharp coders is looking for a project. I only know perl so I'm out hehe

    It's alittle too late to get modded up but maybe one or two people will see this

    a few days ago I found a new p2p it uses SSL, proxys and tunnels though port 80. lots of other ways to trick the RIAA/ISP's from finding out what we'...ahem YOU are sharing.

    Unfortuanatly right now it only works on windows so i was hoping for some slashdot press so we could bug them to death with e-mails :D

    Well, I'm just now reading about Gentoo and thinking about installing it, but my PC is too slow.(233) Id sure love a 3GHz to compile all that stuff. BTW if X is so bloated how come my 233, 64MB ram only uses next to noting on cpu cycles and about 15 megs of RAM, granted i use fluxbox but contrary to popular dis-information X is a damn well built peice of software.

    Thanks, I just came back to reply to my own post incase someone else was having the same problem, as for the audio same thing here, but it works in xine.
    The kicker is its working on my 233 with 64 mb ram, on windows I can't even play files at a fraction of this quality. Damn those mplayer hackers are good.

    What player did you use, I have all (pretty sure) of the win32 codecs for mplayer but

    Opening video decoder: [qtvideo] Quicktime Video decoder
    Win32 LoadLibrary failed to load: qtmlClient.dll,
    /usr/lib/win32/qtmlClient.dll,
    /usr/local/lib/win32/qtmlClient.dll
    invalid qt DLL!
    VDecoder init failed :(

    Anyone know what im missing?

    Let me get this straight, you don't think people should know where they're money is going? No, help who you want. But know who you're helping. Just like the anti-war demonstratins on feb 15th, Tons of people went there for the right reason to protest war and give peace a chance but they didn't know it was funded by communist orginazations who are using the good in people to push their political and socialist agenda. I doubt people knew the first speaker there would be calling for the the release of revolutionairys from jail, the fall of the stock market and a revolution. It was actually a pro-war demonstration to alot of people there, a war against america.

    You can help line the pockets of whoever you want. But I assumed they weren't aware of it. Now if my favorite site is purposly helping an orginization I don't agree with don't I have a right to know where the money is going? Or should we just let them keep thinking its going to something we beleive in?

    The other day when loading up slashdot (like I've done everyday for years)
    I noticed an add on /. for place to purchace PeacePinsso I
    went out of curiosity and saw "We help fund anti-war organizations
    like EndTheWar.org" EndTheWar.org This site is truely disturbing,Using the
    Al Jazeera photos of young kids with their heads blown off for propaganda.
    After doing some more digging on just who these people are I found links
    all over the place for WPK (workers party korea) led by General Secretary
    Kim Jong il and International A.N.S.W.E.R. headed by Brian Becker who just
    with a simple google searchshows up ties to WPK. Other more disturbing things that
    I do not want to say because this was a few days ago and I cannot provide
    links until I get access back the machine I was using at the time.Feel free to
    look it up yourselvs you may find something I didn't.

    I hope slashdot will pay closer attention to who's adds they are promoting

    Yes, in early Feb I listened to C-span as a EIA rep anwsered questions for an hour on oil issues. Canada, Mexico and Venezuela (spelling?) are our largest importers. Saudi is up there too, but don't forget we have the 12th largest reserves and live next to canada and mexico who both have oil.

    All country's control the price setting, thats why Russia started selling us oil because the price was going high and they found it valueable, dropping the price again.

    Maybe you're right I wasn't clear on this: The GPS technology they sold was to prevent OUR gps guided bombs/missles from hitting Iraq government sites. Now, the missles China gave them are currently being flung at American, UK, Aus, Spain troops as we speak. According to the first news reports.

    like France who is funding Iraq dispite the laws _they_ put in place against such a thing?

    How this got modded +5 is nothing less than insanity to me. And shows how uninformed people are.
    Instead of their knee jerk reaction to bash America you should attempt to inform yourselvs on your
    views instead of hearing it on BBC, CNN, FOX, ETC. accepting their bias view as your own.

    If America puts in a fake government (they wont)is that so much worse than the puppet government already inplace?

    I am only saying all this because It's obvious to me why there is anti-american rhetoric comming from all these countries (who fundsthose anyway?) THEY WANT TO GET RICH off a tyrant who gasses his people, starves them, A man who wants to take over the middle easts oil and defend it with the weapons from countries mentioned above. He thought he could do it in '91 with the worlds #6 ranked military.

    What you see in your logs are people scanning blocks looking for holes on random machines, but if someone wants YOU specifically, they will check banners and run code accordingly.
    It's obviously not full proof but anything you can do as an admin to make a crackers job harder the better off you'll be.
