By definition, old games are...old. And crappy.

argh!! it's this sort of response that typifies the driving force in game development today.
people care more about the amount of polygons or pixel shaders in a game engine than if it is actually fun to play.
likewise, game companies are spending more and more money on games that produce good screenshots and less and less on games that are actually fun.

i don't care what year it is, a good 2d fighter is still fun as hell. but you can find one? no, instead you get DOA or MK:DA, which look great but have about 1/10th the playability of SF2.

i mean ffs, by your logic hollywood squares must be more fun than baseball because it uses a computer and was invented later.

sorry for venting, but i really think this attitude has been destroying any innovation (besides 3d tech) in gaming for years now.

But let's make this clear: The printout goes in the ballot box and gets left at the polling place... voters should not have the option of taking a receipt home. Voters should not have any way of obtaining proof they voted a certain way, because that'll lead to kickback schemes and bosses requiring their employees proving they voted a certain way.

    oh, the irony

    budget: $5 million
    time: 2+ years
result: joe voter drops a paper slip in a box

Back to the issue. Running Windows securely really only requires you to configure the system properly. Like disabling all unnecassery services (Universal PnP, Remote assistance, remote registry and so on...), and using none-Microsoft products. Like Mozilla or Opera for web-browsing.

why don't people see that this is a MAJOR FLAW with the OS?
the majority of home PC users are not slashdot geeks and simply don't have the time, and shouldn't have to worry about this sort of stuff.
the whole founding principle of a home PC is that joe somebody is empowered to pursue his lifelong dream of starting a small business and can focus on producing/selling/etc. without having to be a mainframe technician on top of it. at what point does the amount of required fixes/patches/workarounds make a device cease being a tool and become a liability instead?

sally middle-school teacher should be able to check her email without 5 service packs.
bill janitor should be able to boot up a computer and check a sports score without being decieved by a major browser flaw into installing 16 trojans and zombie-fying his machine.

the folks at redmond have forgotten so utterly and completely that the original idea of a computer was to help people that it's mind boggling.

one of the most satisfying things in software dev can be watching someones day become markedly easier b/c of something you worked on.
microsoft has become the antithesis of that.

  8. No mention of Unreal engine? on Trying Your Hand at Level Design? · · Score: 1
The UT2003 engine is IMO simply the best looking engine out there today.

buying the game comes with an extremely sophisticated level designer, on which there are LOADS of tutorials, plus many great mods to map for besides just the original game.

i've heard you can pick it up for as little as $10 now, plus it comes with a free (though slightly crippled) version of Maya to give you a taste of making your own models as well (you can import them into the level designer but nowhere else i think).

    just my recommendation.

He also touted the hire as a money saving measure because 'most communications with the Spirit tend to last about 30 seconds, but with Miss Cleo the first five minutes is only $1.95!'
