that's odd
i tend to spend the weekend trying to think of excuses to avoid doing any work on monday morning, somehow i figured other people did the same thing
p.s. our website hasn't gone down in 2 years, go figure
speaking of journalistic integrity, did you see the article title?
reading it, i couldn't help but imagine the discovery of this news at/. went something like this:
h: 'oh man,.org is down'
t: 'no way'
h: 'way'
t: 'no way'
h: 'way'
t: 'duuuuude. like, slashdot is totally a.org site. bogus!'
h: 'like for real brah. and i was completely about to make some righteous nachos before this happened!'
t: 'oh wait it's back! tubular!'
h: 'schweet. check me out while i post this totally rad story on our site!'
so you can quit trying to hold in your gut, programmers!
why is this such a stereotype with programmers?
it's just because of this i've been trying to _get_ a gut for years, beer, cheetos the works - but nothing doing yet
and to top it all off, i have to have/. in the morning reminding me how much of a lesser coder i am with comments like these!
please stop this horrible stereotype, so us skinny geeks can finally stand up proud!!
ok, when exactly are they claiming to have invented this?
i don't know the first thing about proving prior art, but i happen to know i came up with the idea of saving multiple shopping carts w/ names roughly around 1998
proving it is going to require showing some spaghetti that i'm really not that proud of though;)
neat idea, but i think much more likely than per instance jobs you will see a rash of shops selling pre-made software modules that you can plug in as you desire

actually now that i think about it i might end up forming a new start up after work today;)
While open source community believes that this process produces better software than the traditional closed model, proponents of proprietary software argue that this model can't work in the commercial world.
it doesn't matter as long as it works in the real world
this is one place where i think capitalism really shines
people won't stand for something ineffecient just because so and so would like to keep it that way so they can get rich, and the market will kill off companies that can't adapt as needed
'but i HAVE to post pictures on the web!'
'well ok, but at least make them ridiculously large and serve them off of a 486 in the closet, that way no one can actually _see_ them'
'yes dear' ;)
the TCO may in some cases be cheaper for Windows now, but only because the market is saturated w/ windows admins.
what about in 10 years when the tables turn (it's entirely possible) and the market is saturated w/ *nix admins?
all of a sudden those constant license upgrades are a major financial burden
honestly, every time i see one of these reports trying to convince me that paying is cheaper than free i flip through looking for the page that proves water isn't wet and politicians are honest.
consoles are increasingly competing w/ PC's on all of the PC's traditional selling points (online play etc.)
but there is one reason PC gaming will never die - user mods and content
Unreal 2003 comes with the full featured level editor they used to design the actual game!
that right there was enough to get me to buy it without even trying the demo (and yes, the editor is &%$!#@ amazing)
until consoles can give me something like this, i'm going to have to stick w/ owning both - consoles for fast arcade style action, PC's for letting me screw around with the guts of games I buy (arguably more fun than playing them)
i am so sick of this response on the issue and so sick of seeing it modded up every time
most of the worlds largest companies use 'spam' to market
companies with big budgets to pay people a lot a smarter than you and me to make sure that it is quantifiably profitable
spam is profitable for all parties. end of discussion
articles like these make me think that MS own crusade against Linux has ironically done more for the Linux/OSS fight against MS than any other factor
they tried to squash linux before it started, so instead of empire building until they could no longer ignore linux they focused on it before they had to and only succeded in thrusting it into the limelight
IMO, when trying to convert windows users to linux - this is going about things exactly backwards.
the first step is to break the Office reliance, and get people to use OO.org, SO etc. on windows
people don't care what OS they use as long as it does what they want
instead of chasing a wild emulation goose that will never be perfect - leaving the faults of the software to be blamed on the OS, show them a perfect alternative on something their used to and then an OS switch will barely even be noticable
I don't mean to be a troll, but you seem to assume through all of this that China will be staying true to the GPL...
what's to stop them from taking the code and running so to speak? RMS invades?
much more likely, you will never see the first line of any serious linux based code written by the chinese government
can you imagine lots of kiddies downloading the linux based kernel that drives chinese missile batteries? i think not
I've yet to see how Linux is the only 'available/possible' OS to compare to windows
linux is the only viable alternative on x86 hardware, the other relative monopoly in the desktop world.
more importantly though, Sun, Apple etc. all represent little tiny monopolies in their own realm - i.e. Apple has an OS monopoly over people who use Apple hardware, same for Sun
If MS can successfully implement their Palladium goals then they will become a hardware+software monopoly as well, only for x86 desktops (and thusly the world - not a good thing)
not to sound too apocalyptic but Linux desktop may be the only chance to avoid this
can you browse your files w/ tabs or just web pages?
i would love tabbed based directory browsing, especially if they could do the photoshop combining tabs into windows thing (of course then Adobe sues them)
ah if only my C was better (or any good at all) i'd give it a shot myself...

'why does it say i don't have permission to install kazaa on this machine?'
'delicate windows sytem message. very high level. just ignore it.'
first off, why are you looking to redhat for moral role models?
second, let me let you in on a secret about open source software...
if company X packages/distributes OSS in a way you don't like, you are FREE to do it differently yourself.
face it, redhat doesn't owe you anything, nor do they lead/represent/speak for 'the movement' and yes the majority of people use free software because of the free part and not the road to world peace part

now if we could just put some listening protection on all the backstreet boys cd's, the world would be a much happier place...
