You know, part of taking responsibility is listening to expert opinions before making your decision. Making an arbitrary choice without becoming informed first is not taking responsibility, it's avoiding it.

Note: It does NOT take a village to raise a child. Chrissakes, video games aren't new, most of today's parent's grew up with them at one point or another. If you have to run around to so-called experts every time you make a decision like this, you aren't being a parent at all. You've hopefully got some common sense--use it. In my opinion, you make sure the child is doing well in school, knows how to pick up a book and read it (on their own.) They also need some time out riding bicycles, playing kickball, soccer or other (non-regulated--no uniforms, no coaches, no screaming parents) sport with their friends. They need to get to be a kid to where playing video games isn't the only thing they want to do. Too many parents already use the TV as a babysitter, these games don't need to be another one.

And the parents need to sit down a play a few with them. Remember when families used to sit down together and play a board game? It was a time for fun and conversation. So this isn't the same, but taking out the Lego death star with your kid might give you some time together. Also you'll get to know what all those mysterious ratings on boxes mean if you didn't know before.

(It's no wonder that these airheads in Hollywood fall for this.) All your successes will be credited to how great their program is. Any failures will be your fault and an indication that you're not following the teachings (or more likely, not donating enough.) They will encourage a member to break up their marriage or break off any ties to family and friends who are non-believers. They want to recruit you, but will not tell you what they're about up front. Because of course they would be laughed at if they told you the whole story. Rather they take you through a series of brainwashing exercises and feed you bits and pieces of half-truths. So eventually if A = B and B = C then C will = A. Or, in the words of the late Richard Jenni, "So if God is Love and Love is Blind...Ray Charles must be God."

First off this was hardly one person expressing a dislike. He spearheaded a group of sixty-seven professors and researchers, not including students, to protest his visit until the Pope cancelled. All over some rather vague, out-of-context comment about a quote made 400 years ago. Unfortunately, universities have become bastions for censorship instead of speech. If a person shows up that carries a view some don't approve of they throw things or shout the person down. That IS censorship and that IS force. You make it sound like Cini merely presented a paper or a dissertation on the topic. He was protesting a religious icon speaking at a so-called "secular" setting. The students opposed to the visit kicked off "an anti-clergy week."

Then Cini has the gall to complain that, "It will be a pretext for accusing us of refusing dialogue." WHAT dialogue? They've made it clear they don't want any sort of dialogue that disagrees with their own fervent beliefs. Says Cini, "Today it [the Church] uses the Enlightenment's God of Reason as a Trojan horse to enter the citadel of scientific knowledge."

Now that's not only intolerant it make me wonder what he and the other scientists fear about discourse. If their belief in science is as rock solid as the Pope's faith, then they should welcome the challenge. Instead they compare religion as Trojan horse who will, after entering the gates, overcome their vulnerable "citadel."

  10. I LIKE my DVD Recorder! on Why Americans Don't Buy DVD Recorders · · Score: 1

I don't know that I agree with the statement, "With cable, the same show can appear on a channel several times." With some channels and some shows, i.e. movies, HBO, Showtime, etc. that's true. In years past we always had the summer reruns to catch up on a missed series, but no longer. Now a show goes through a season and never reruns unless it's highly popular and picked up as such a few years down the line. Seasons are broken up and new shows are now being introduced in what used to be mid-season (January) or even over the summer.

I do think the fact that you can run out and buy the entire season a few months after it aired might be a deterrent to getting a DVDR. Also that the standard DVD will only hold 1-2 hours of higher-def video.

However, I love my DVDR. I've got a Philips that plays DiVX on both CD AND DVD, so I can have almost a whole season of episodes on a DVD. When I record something I want to keep it's easy to copy from the disc (I use rewritable DVDs) convert to DiVX and edit out the commercials with Virtual Dub. Then it just a matter of recording them as files to a permanent disc. I never had that ability, in a practical sense, with a VCR. And I believe (or from what I've heard) that you cannot easily do this with a TiVO. That to me is more of a watch and record over. So if you don't want or need a permanent copy of something, that might be for you. And I hear a lot of people ending up with a hard drive full of show that they don't get around to watching.

The only disadvantage, as someone pointed out, was watching something else while recording is impossible. That is going to be a problem with almost any recording device except a TiVO because most people have to go through a cable or satellite box which has to be set to the right channel so it essentially records from that box. If it could go through the TV it would be able to record multiple channels at one time.

And even some banks (Bank of America) have stopped asking for SS#.

SS in of itself is NOT a national ID. Even where it's required, you must also present a photo ID. Passports are not a true National ID as they are not required unless you travel out of the country. But unless you're living under a bridge you HAVE to have some sort of photo ID in the form of a driver's license or recognized photo ID to do pretty much anything.

Once again, the Feds are playing 'let's just do it and say we didn't.' They simply pass on their (unfunded) madates to the states and then wash their hands and say, "What National ID?"

    * They will mandate that all states check SS# when you renew your DL. Thus the possibility of connecting your SS# with your state DL.

    * They will not have chips, but our state and I'm sure others aleady have a magnetic strip that they can just run through a credit card type reader. No telling what information is or will be stored.

    * You will have to have this ID in order to travel by plane in the US.

    * They will take the photograph at the beginning so if someone is rejected, they will have it on file. Does anyone think for a momment this information will *not* eventually end up in federal hands. Reasoning will be, "After all, the *terrorist* could just go to another state and try so we really need to centralize this information." They will also have to centralize the information in order to make sure people aren't getting multilple IDs from several states. So the fed will have their hands on it.

And this won't do anything about illegal immigration even though it's part of the check. Neither party has shown any interest in stopping that flow and are even doing some things that will make it easier for people to illegally sneak into the country.

Neither will it stop experienced criminals or terrorists who always seem to find a way to make or get bogus IDs.

I know there's been a debate every few years over a national ID and each time they say the're not going to do that; now this is essentially the same thing and nothing's said until it's a done deal? Bullshit!

The only quibble that this isn't a national ID is that they're making the states do it instead of the fed. Oh, except that it's MANDATED by the feds, so yes, it's a national ID.

To get those channels you have to have the latest dish and (of course) pay more $$$ per month! Now I could probably get a deal where they replace the dish for free (with, of course, a renewed x-year commitment.) But only one of my TVs is digital. (If you don't have a digital-ready TV, it doesn't make sense to upgrade your satellite or cable.) And the regular DirecTV still looks good even on the hi-def TV. (Keep in mind when you shop for a digital TV that the store picture is digital cable or other Hi-Def format. YMMV once you get the set home.)

What I'm wondering is, right now the satellite companies are adding digital channels, but you have to upgrade to that format. What's going to happen in 2009 if you're still using the previous satellite dish--I'm suspecting there's going to be a HUGE bottleneck trying to replace all those older dishes. I will probably upgrade, but I'm debating about when to do so. I want to get the best deal (and I imagine they'll be floating some of those), but I don't want to be caught up in the flood once everyone else puts 2+2 together. Also I'm not even sure how it's going to work getting local channels even with a high-def TV if the satellite or cable goes down, like in a storm.
