What this means is that if there is an X% chance of getting cancer after smoking Y cigarettes, you can take the average cost to treat lung cancer, divide it up and tack that cost onto the price of cigarettes.
THIS! I have always said they need to figure out the annual cost to the healthcare system of cancers caused by cigarettes and then levy that amount of tax against cigarette companies every year to offset the cost. That way smokers pay for smoker deaths, rather than the rest of the population subsidizing it. It would mean lower healthcare costs for people who live cleaner lives and higher for those who don't.
New iPhone is launched: Apple Fanbois: New iPhone is faster than the Samsung! Android Fanbois: It doesn't matter. So many other things are more important the processor speed!!!!
New Android phone is launched: Android Fanbois: New Samsung is faster than the iPhone! Apple Fanbois: It doesn't matter. So many other things are more important the processor speed!!!!
This is stupid, what happens if the face detection does not work? What happens if you get injured or even a new haircut? What if you have a dark complexion or get a tan? This is the smarted form of stupid yet from Apple, a company more and more out of touch with its customers.
This was all addressed in the presentation. It still works if you change your look, because that's not the data points the sensors are looking at.
Those of us in the tech sector need to be seriously talking about building a new layer of internet on top of the old one.
Agreed. I have been thinking about this for some time. There's got to be some kind of Virtual Internet (maybe based on VPNs) that we can build over the top of the current Internet. One where all traffic is encrypted and the sources are untraceable. Similar to TOR, but without all of the hops.
Surely NASA has a backup in case of a disaster like this? What if there was a fire in the building? Can they not move mission control to Florida as a backup?
I would guess making a black box that could survive a crash and still have antennas that can communicate with a satelite despite being underwater or buried in debris would be a bit of a challenge.
It doesn't have to. It just has to transmit them up until splashdown.
Considering that the black box most likely is not in the open air with clear path to a satelite, the chance of its signals reaching the satelite are pretty slim.
Agreed, but if the plane was transmitting GPS coordinates up until the box went under water, we'd know exactly where it was and where to look for it.
I have a telescope and have observed numerous satellite's up to and including the International Space station. It's fun. But I don't see that's relative to the OP.
I find it very surprising that the black boxes in airplanes don't communicate with a satellite in this day and age. The technology has been around for 30 years at this point.
recurring revenue isn't always bad for the consumer because it's a very predictable item in a budget. For metered items sometimes you have to adjust how much you're spending on this
That's true until you have to have 15 subscriptions for competing services to see the content you want to see. HBO for Game of Thrones, Neflix for Victoria, Disney for Star Wars, etc. This isn't what consumers are asking for.

Samsung have never been faster than iPhone, fag.
I'm not gay, and I never said it was. Nice to meet you. (or in your case meat you)
How many professional uses do you use your Android for?

Your doing a good job spouting out what Rush Limbaugh told you that liberals believe. Why don't you actually ask a liberal next time.
Go ahead and sit in that room with your eyes closed. We have plenty of time.
You can open your eyes, just look left right up down and not at the device.
The Police don't have your unlock code. They simply aim it at your face.
Again, addressed in the presentation. If they point it at your face, don't look at the screen and it won't unlock.
This is stupid, what happens if the face detection does not work? What happens if you get injured or even a new haircut? What if you have a dark complexion or get a tan? This is the smarted form of stupid yet from Apple, a company more and more out of touch with its customers.

But a phone that unlocks when it sees your face is one that the police can confiscate and unlock by simply aiming it at your face.
Why wouldn't you want that convenience?
They addressed this in the presentation. You have to look at it with your eyeballs. As long as you look away with your eyes, it won't unlock.
Because this is how you get it.
Any attempt at anonymity is useless "without all the hops". It's the only way to make traffic analysis non-trivial.
I don't think so. With point-to-multipoint tunnels, the routers in the middle would never know where the traffic inside the tunnels was destined.

were against the manned space program. Most scientists are.
Like most statistics, this one is completely made up and hogwash.
That would be better spent on people here. Manned space flight program should be canceled.
I didn't know you were on Slashdot Mr. Trump.

Again, it doesn't have to. It just has to transmit GPS coordinates up until splashdown.
Maybe you're not aware that numerous parts of this plane have been located. It has indeed crashed. We just don't know the location.

Communicating with satellites from the bottom of the sea would take a lot of power.
Agreed, but if the plane was transmitting GPS coordinates up until the box went under water, we'd know exactly where it was and where to look for it.

Recurring revenue is all companies can think about and it is destroying things
Fantastic! The moon will have better coverage than the town where I live! Wait. That sucks.
