I'm sure many of the people complaining about the price are already buying real, printed on dead trees, game magazines.
And as someone already pointed out if you can't afford $5 a month for a game magazine (either online or print) you're unlikely to be able to buy games.
I also would like to point out that gamespot is providing real content unlike Slashdot which is made by its users.;P
I could find 4 games but instead I'll concentrate on one series of games. Since one example is enough to prove that not all games are devoid of content that should be protected as free speech.
In Ultima IV, Richard Garriot (aka. Lord British) invented a system of beliefs for his imaginary world. I won't go into the details but this elaborate system promotes the following of eight virtues (such as compassion, justice, and so on).
Now Lord British has received mail from people who told him how their life had changed because of that insight, that they had become better persons. This game influenced those people on a moral level, religious even.
How can such a game not be protected by free-speech?
The sun will burn your face with its UV radiation. In this season, you might get pollen poisoining too. And worst of all, you might actually meet real people! (you know, the strange kind that just stares at you when you want to discuss the merits of the preemptive linux kernel).
And if these aren't enough to convinve you. Think about all the things you can do with your computer instead of wasting time "outdoors".
Most of the little online transactions are made through a 3rd party. If I can't use my Mastercard for registering shareware and stuff like that, I need a new card.
The problem is that everytime microsoft bundles some basic software with the OS, like an internet browser for example, everyone starts yelling "Monopoly! Monopoly!".
The authors are complaining they are not receiving money for the sale of used books?
Are they forgeting they have already received that money when those were sold the first time. Are we going to see EULA for books that license the reading right to a specific user (reader) and prohibit the resale of the license??
I don't see any problem for an online world that works on Windows, Linux or Mac. If the game is correctly programmed and use abstraction layers that is easy.
But in the case of the PS2, the platforms are very different and I don't the game is going to be exactly the same. And if the game is different, sharing the same world will be nearly impossible.
What you plan to do in 15 months doesn't concern them. You know an employment contract isn't the same as slavery, right?;) As long as you respect the legal delays, you can quit whenever you want to for whatever reason you want to (the same apply to your employers and they won't feel bad about it, trust me). And for a first job, staying 15 months is a perfectly normal duration.
Gobe Productive was one of my favorites on BeOS. If this one is just as cool, I'm gonna buy it. I hope they have a special upgrade price for their old BeOS customers.
I discussed the idea of a fork with Kurt a while ago and he didn't like the idea at all. No, I wasn't planning to make such a fork, this was just hypothetical.
But forks are part of the open-source life and since he wants control over his baby he probably shouldn't have released it as open-source.
Funny, I didn't know who Sam Waterston was (or Watterson as it was spelled) so I really thought that Taco meant "Note". I thought the guy must be some legal expert. Well, now after an IMDB search I know better;)
Now I wonder if it's worth spending too much time learning it. Yes, I can use the version I've got but learning to master a 3d application is a huge investment in time and without the promise of a future maybe I should rather look at some other apps.
Anyway it would be sad to see blender go, I hope that somehow the development will continue.
Your fear is a result of your ignorance. [...] But having the weapon and the ability to use it is what has kept this planet safe and stable for 50 years.
I may be ignorant as you say, but at least I don't claim to be able to tell what the history of these past 50 years would have been without nuclear weapons. I think we barely escaped a nuclear war during the worst hours of the cold war but that's just speculation.
And none of any of this has anything to do with Bush;
The Bush administration has increased the military budgets in huge proportions, has withdrawn from the ABM treaty and is now threatening the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
I'm worried about the nuclear power in the nations you mentioned. But may I remind you that the USA is the only country that has actually used this weapon?
According to some historians, it seems that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki could have been easily avoided as Japan was ready to surrender. It was not an unconditional surrender though. A detail that cost the lives of over 200'000 civilians.
So anyone near Geneva wants to do a protest at the WIPO offices or will I be alone?;)
Seriously, that's really sad that such texts could be accepted. If you're a coder and have made softwares that could be used as a copy protection circumvention device (even if they have legitimate uses). You're now more than ever in danger due to the articles 11 and 12 of this treaty.
Banner ads are small enough that I can easily tolerate them, but the popups, flash ads that play music, animated shoot the monkey or all this annoying stuff is forcing me to configure some serious anti-ad protection. This is sad cause I clicked on an interesting ad once in a while and I bought some cool softwares and stuff after clicking an ad.
But when you go too far with advertisement you start annoying people, people get angry when they are annoyed and angry people aren't good customers.
Maybe that's what this huge satellite is, as most satellites tend to be ever lighter and cheaper. I'm glad there was no problem with this launch, the data collecting by this one will be quite interesting.

Ok, I'm gonna burn some karma on this one but I'm really angry at the /. editors for letting such a spoiler on the frontpage without even a warning.
:(
Yes, this message is redundant, so moderate me down but I just had to say it.

Slashdot their main FTP before the mirrors are ready. That's a really bright idea!

Anyone wants to train his martial arts, Dragon Ball style? Only 2G though :(

So you post on slashdot and don't consider yourself a geek? In case you didn't notice, it's "news for *nerds*, stuff that matters" :)

With a little help from Moore's Law the canadian copyright office is going to be the richest organization on earth in a few years :)
Who said geeks are no good at sports? ;)
I saw it at an anime convention many years ago. IIRC it kind of sucked. It was a fun thing to watch at a convention though,

Couldn't you get rid of Bush before he starts a thermonuclear war?
Cause I don't know about you, but the rest of the planet is getting a little bit scared.
that I'll be using the same browser that AOLers use. I'll be too ashamed and switch to Konqueror :)
