that's great and all but I was under the impression most serious terrorists didn't really care if they die or maybe even intent on blowing themselves up anyway.
I think the next few years are going to bring about huge changes in the OS market, it's already apparent that the importance of windows is on the decline (with the two notable exceptions being gaming and the corporate exchange environment). The only question left is what exactly will these changes bring?
This is pretty easy because in Chinese each character has only one pronunciation (per dialect, anyway).
In the case of mandarin, while it is the case most of the time that each character has only one pronunciation there are cases where are character may have a different reading depending on the compound word it is in. The case with simplified Chinese as per the mainland makes this even more burdensome as multiple characters with different tones or different pronunciations altogether were combined to make the language easier to read/write.
Mapping the standard pinyin (romanised) transcription of each character is not the hard part. The hard part is performing analysis on the sentence structure allowing one to type with a minimal amount of tone marks and saving time in the process. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it is this analytical data that google has been accused of stealing and as such, there is no justification for this being in the public domain.
I never heard of these IMEs from google or souhu before but as I work with Chinese on a daily basis it is scary to think that these 3rd part applications can actually record everything you type and send it to the google or the Chinese government, whatever. The idea of having an IME that can easily carry from one system to the next all your custom words is a good idea, and the internet would be fine if it linked only to a machine of my choosing. Personally I think being able to store custom IME data on a USB drive would be even better, and whoever implements it first probably stands to make a big buck considering how cheap USB drives are and how convienent it would be to go from the library to a net cafe or wherever else you can think of, and have all your custom IME settings loaded instantly.
Well if a political statement is turned into a 'viral' youtube video (a la hillary 1984) then it's very likely more people will hear it than a street protest. Of course this just means that in a (mostly?) free country like the US you can have a street protest AND a viral video on the net, why choose just one?
PSP uses the same stupid asinine mentality of the PS3 but now in the palm of your hand "BIGGER, BETTER, BADDER!" with games that look pretty and chuck gameplay in as an afterthought half the time, sony tried to make it a portable media hub and it's still expensive as hell to boot. PSP is the same mentality as the PS3 and therefore doesn't stand any real extra chance of succeeding. The DS on the other hand, has already proven that the simpler and more addictive games the better. Hell my friend who isn't into to videogames just told me she wants a DS...
I agree with you because I have friends who don't know/don't care to download anything but go right out and buy these shitty bootlegs that someone burns in there home.
This means nothing. If you click the link.."By anonymizing our server logs after 18-24 months..." That's still far too long and is most likely motivated more by logistical concerns in retaining so much data than out of any act of benevolence. However it definately makes good PR to paint this as 'Taking steps to improve privacy'...
I don't even want to try understand what exactly was going through this persons head to make a statement like that. All I know is that computer science is far from dead, it's just out of the limelight. A few years ago people were throwing money around like crazy and everyone knew someone who was in CS. I almost ended up majoring in CS in my university, but quickly came to my senses as the last thing I want to do is spend more time on the computer than I already do...
if this guy really just cares about the story I have a simple solution to his problem:
Buy a gameshark!
Then you can set yourself to start at whatever stats you want, sure it's cheating but if it makes you enjoy it to blast through the game cheating with a jacked up character, more power to you.
The average person is not going to notice or care about the difference between DVD and HD-DVD/Bluray.
It reminds me of the situation of SACD. Sure maybe there audio/videophiles out there and so there is a niche market, but I don't see it ever entering the mainstream anytime soon (if ever).
CCTV, phone cameras, pocket cameras, instant cameras, sattelite surveillance. We are photographed 1000s of times every day without even being aware of it (ok I pulled this number out of my ass but we are photographed a lot). I think we just have to accept that as a society we are moving to the point where we lose our privacy and it seems like you can either embrace the loss or try to fight it.
What's the difference between this and microsoft passport?

I wonder if this study accounted for VoiP users as well for the sharp drop in regular landline users?

then I have no doubt that "parts of it's catalog" means they may be testing it on a few select artists that may or may not even be popular.
unless you're in China, where it's unlimited until you say something bad about the government...

My queen begs to differ

Is this a joke or is microsoft really that desperate???

This is just like when the SNES was ahead of PS3 on amazon right? I really don't think these numbers mean anything
