this is slashdot, neither do I. On a different note, if volatile memory is discoverable, is that not akin to volatile human information being discoverable? By that I mean should every phone call be logged and recorded going into a place of business? Every conversation even? Hell, perhaps things will be recorded that are not pertinent, similar to other data stored on the RAM, but for the greater good of a court order... And the technology exists, so again like making the RAM available for discovery, it is possible.

...one can see you are well versed on the case. Anyways, if the judge knew that the logging IP addresses was a trivial matter, then why didn't she order them to do so? Instead she delved into a technological arena where the consequences of her action or what the implications might be where poorly understood at best.

if the Tab to ask would discount the predictability factor, perhaps something along the line of a vxworks based os where it can "predict" what you wanted by abbreviation or first few letters (a common thread in most of their patents I would imagine, you have to start somewhere). A Nortel Passport ex.:

    sho lo fi ta
    = show log file tail

Although the auto-complete occurs after execution, it's not tooo much of a stretch to look at it as "predicting" what was intended.

How does living entirely in a prefabbed environment make anyone self-reliant? Is she saying... "ohhh I can work out my problems now with meditation instead of crying over drinks with the ladies!"

I would think this experience would lend itself more towards group initiative and synergy to get by than "self-reliant". I mean come on, they are probably told when to eat, sleep and fart by a NASA computer.

By linking the Netgear on two ports to the Cisco (regardless of whether a cross-over is used) you introduce a Loop into the network... a big No No without proper VLANing or routing inbetween as the MAC forwarding table of the cisco will pick up both ports. Using Spanning Tree Protocol is one line of defense for this, but not an end all cure. Depending on the router or type of trunking that the cisco was uplinked too, the whole segment might be automatically taken offline and disabled to prevent further damage, so usually the whole switch stack drops from the network.
