What I don't understand is why Google is going out of their way to punish BMW for using SEO strategies to up their pagerank instead of chasing all the other junk (porn, pharmaceuticals, etc. websites that do the same with far more malicious intent. In fact, it could almost be said that legitimate companies such as BMW *have* to engage in this type of behavior just to keep themselves above the noise.
I'd really rather that Google spend some time tuning their engine to eliminate all the trash it's accumulated rather than making big headlines punishing organizations that are relatively decent Internet citizens. And on the off chance that Google is trying to 'make an example' by punishing a big company like BMW, someone there needs to be hit with the clue hammer; no disrespectable SEO slinger is going to pay attention to that sort of thing.
Ever heard of a reaction wheel? Basically, it's a spinning gyroscope, with a servo on the end of the axis. By turning against the force axis, a satellite (or the space station, or any other body) can reorient itself. With enough surplus solar power budget for this sort of thing, a satellite could rotate at will without burning a limited resource like propellant.
I'm curious as to what technology underlies the iTunes Music Store. Are they using Apple hardware on the hardware side? WebObjects on the software side? If it's an "all-Apple" solution that's a major success story that they ought to be leveraging to sell their server products.
It's pretty clear from reading TFA that cable TV as we know it is (well, will soon be) OVER. This step by Warner is a watershed event that I predict will completely change television distribution as we know it. Think about it - marrying the market-targeting power of the Internet with inexpensively-produced content such as video is going to prove an unstoppable combination. Although these shows have ads in them now, it's only a matter of time before said ads will be targeted per individual, and having the P2P network provide the distribution is a much sweeter deal than any cable network could ever provide. Best of all, the ad revenue is directed 100% toward Warner, instead of trickling down to them via a cable network.
This is revolutionary. The reason that the MPAA members haven't bought into this yet is that their content costs a lot more to produce, and hence carries a lot more risk. I would guess though, that it won't be long before we start seeing the same movies coming across a service like this as are in the.99 DVD bins at Wal-Mart as studios decide to dip their toes into the pool.
OK, the first thing that pops out at me when I look at this is the fact that a lot of the world is green. Even in places where you expect "urban deforestation", i.e. New York, it's pretty much all green. Looking down at Brazil, etc...green. This isn't necessarily to say that deforestation isn't happening, but Blue Marble ought to be a wake-up call for those that get worked up as a result of all the hype and scary newspeak that makes people think that Earth is practically balding.
You're forgetting "tropospheric ducting", which can be caused by some weather phenomena. This propagation method allows VHF signals to travel much farther than normal.
Ditto for "Sporadic E", which allows some lower-frequency VHF to travel due to high levels of localized ionization caused by meteors passing through the atmoshphere.
Of course, the problem is that they don't work for microwave frequencies and aren't around all the time:) But they do work for "Multi megawatt FM stations"...
Synopsis:
Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante known only as "V." Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself - and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.
Think that they'll be adjusting any of that due to the recent bombings in London?
Has sanity set in you ask? No, the Justice Department saw that they couldn't still battle Microsoft in their courts and at the same time drink the Kool-Aid themselves. So it's not sanity, just an amazing absence of hypocrisy.
This has been all over every OTHER site in the world..why not say, "as seen on Blue's News" or something of the sort instead of trying to make it sound like/. did some serious investigative journalism on this one?!?!
Oh wait. Did I just say "Slashdot", "serious", and "journalism" in the same sentence? Wait, come back...quit laughing...
Could this guy TRY to be more disparaging in his tone? Sure, he tries to give a little back with a comment regarding the quality of Linux code, but for those that haven't RTFA, here's the gist:
1) Linux runs on a 'toy' platform (x86), and why the hell would a programmer want threads when there's not TRUE concurrency?
2) Linux does nothing significant that AT&T wasn't doing 10 years ago.
3) Generally speaking, Linux sucks.
IMHO I expect to see this sort of thing about half-way down in a thread of/. comments, not on an actual computing news site.
From the telcos' perspective, there is a lot of motivation to centralize the authority over VoIP. Why? Because they know the freight train is coming and they would like to send all their lobbyists to one place (Washington) instead of having to spread their efforts out to every state capitol.
If you want to protect VoIP, the best thing we can do is have the individual states regulate it. Security through heterogenity works against attacks on technology as well as for computer networks:)

Every time I think of a 12-unit rank of siege tanks going, "CHOOM! CHOOM!" I start harassing my friends to get on our bnetd server and play some more.

So now that the Windows source code is out in the open and a market price has been set...
:D
It was too much to ask for Windows to become FOSS, but at least now it's $20OSS
Hell, I was dialing in over 300 baud modem to W.O.P.R. back in 1983 playing "Global Thermonucluear War."
Come to think of it...I never did beat that game...
