    This underscores the concept that any communication medium is only as safe/dangerous as the people using it. I am sure there have been cases of "FAX Rage" too, but that is not sexy enough to make the news.

    Perhaps reading about the law of war might enlighten you; prisoners of war are not given "due process", and are not "criminals". Why do you want to treat enemy combatants as if they had all the rights of a U.S. citizen?

    Perhaps you should look up the definition of "Symbol". The fact that Americans can disagree and complain about the Patriot Act in an open forum and not be hunted down and tortured is one of the "values" that we stand for.

    One could argue that the only thing that prevented the Black Plague from decimating the human race was the separation between the various populations during the middle ages. In a world where a vector could travel the globe in 24 hours, serious depopulation by virus is a much more likely scenario. It is true that nuclear war would likely not destroy all human life. However, nuclear winter eventually could by choking off the algae . Since algae produces the majority of the earths oxygen, it would be a serious problem for us. No matter how good we are at surviving, if you take away a significant portion of our O2 we, and all mamalian life, will be toast.
