  18. Re:No competition on EBay Deal Irritates Individual Sellers · · Score: 1

Ya competition is a big issue.

Lots of people complain about Ebay and it's freeze all accounts happy pet PayPal. Yet neither has a viable alternative. For Ebay you can go with either Overstock or Paypal, but while CL may have a huge following their isn't any of the benefits to a business such as sale tracking and record keeping that Ebay has somewhat of a capability to do. Also you have to deal with people or competitors flagging items and a system that automatically removes them after some time that just creates a lot of problems for companies (not so much individuals).

Overstock on the other hand is very similar to Ebay, but there is just nowhere near the consumer traffic - which isn't too surprising considering it was a middle aged blond lady who could be my mom telling me about the website in a dress that I suppose should have been sexy, but...it's like my mom.

As far as PayPal there seems to be no one who's even close to offering anything like it. And the alternatives on the anti-PayPal sites are all bullshit, because I've tried to use some of them and I either have to pay some type of monthly fee, on top of a transaction fee or it's a significant higher cost per transaction.

Oh well, maybe google will come up with a real answer soon.

  19. I'm surprised on Workplace BlackBerry Use May Spur Lawsuits · · Score: 1

that companies would actually give, let alone expect non-exempt employees to be in contact after hours. There are very few nob-exempt positions at the company I work for and they're relatively simple tasks. If you're actually someone who needs to be in contact with others on a regular basis, like myself, who gets calls at 10pm or 2am for "emergencies" then you're an exempt aka salaried position, which also means I get to leave when I want when it's dead...of course I have worked 14 days straight near deadlines.

But ya, if I was hourly and you called me at 10pm or 2am I'd put in for overtime, bill you or expect some type of compensation - if not I can see why this would be grounds for a big shit storm.

  20. I think Ebay is wrong here... on Ebay Fined $61M By French Court For Sales of Fake Goods · · Score: 1

but only because they set the precedent... Ebay is constantly pulling auctions with little or no warning from people based on companies asking them too without really looking into "why". In some cases it's very legitimate, like say Blizzard not wanting people to sell their WoW accounts and so they work with Ebay to pull them down. On the other hand it can be something we see as silly as the case of LVHM not wanting their products sold by 3rd parties.

Name Brand, Designer items are expensive because their is a name and a service associated with them that can only be consistently offered if the company has a limited distribution channel it can accurately monitor. For example: I purchased a Louis Vuitton purse and matching wallet for my wife for a ridiculous amount of money. When I purchased it at the LV store they took my name, her name and a lot of other info. Now we've relocated three times since then (4 years later) and we can still go into any LV store to have the purse cleaned and treated for free just by giving them our names and info. Luxury items are not just expensive for the sake of being expensive, their is a service and expectation that comes with having them, otherwise there would be no difference between JC Penny and Coach.

  21. Not sure if that is actually spam or not... on How To Convince My Boss Not To Spam? · · Score: 1

Working with various Real Estate companies we maintained email/address lists of all the competing brokerage houses within our region. Most email blasts would go out to these lists. The lists were managed and maintained usually by our receptionist.

Now fast forward a bit and when one of our newer offices came aboard, they didn't have an existing list for their region. Typically, the easiest way to generate this list is to have your receptionist call each competing office and ask for the most current roster to be sent over. She then retypes it in excel and continues to add and update it every quarter.

However, this newer office didn't want to assign this task to our receptionist, so they would copy/save all addresses not BCC'd to them and create their own lists. This is not spam as all the email lists are brokers or people who have signed up to hear about commercial real estate in their area or are developers and investors who have already worked with some of our companies brokers in the past or presently.

I know the Real Estate business is a bit different, because you have people who want to represent the buyers, sellers and tenants, so it's common to work with competing company brokers on deals - however I know nothing about travel agencies so this tactic may not apply.
