Apple's OpenDirectory system is a joy to use and easy to setup. However their lack of a groupware system is truly a shame.
Having said this, I would have a look at CommuniGate Pro from Stalker.com It integrates with OpenDiretory and you can use Outlook as the client front-end and get pretty close to an Exchange system for less money and the hardware requirements are much less hoary.
During the Reagan years this was known as SDI or Strategic Defense Initiative or SDI, AKA "Star Wars".
They spent BILLIONS and never deployed anything (that we know of). They got some cool laser technology out of it though.
Reagan on many occasions in speeches alluded to "outside forces" and perhaps this was something to combat it. Here is an excerpt from a UN speech:
"I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world. And yet, I ask: is not an alien force ALREADY among us?"
I'm not a fan of MS products, much less Windows but the fact of the matter is that viruses are a pain in the rear and anti-virus software should be a RIGHT, not a PRIVILEGE.
Microsoft, should make it free to everyone but that does not absolve them from fixing the problems with Windows. They need to do both.
Sorry but reality is that Photoshop is not available on Linux (yet) so trying to use GIMP to do this is not the best route to take.
Your best bet is to get a Mac and Photoshop and have most of the benefits of LInux (UNIX underpinnings) and the ability to run popular commercial software.
P.S. Some Macs are not that expensive. I downgraded to a 20" iMac G5 from a dual CPU G5 and I don't miss the extra speed, saved a bunch as well.

A lot our clients are saddled with Exchange server 5.5 and 2000 networks with MAPI ONLY. This precludes moving to Entourage since that requires SMTP, IMAP and OWA enabled.

I agree that they should provide a PAM option for vairous things including the Login window. However Apple has done a magnificent job integrating keberos in both Panther and Panther server. Totally transparent and painless.
