You're assuming this scheme to help UK consumers. It's just another method for Sony to screw themselves. The people who do the pre-order are going to be one of the last people to get their systems.
The Sony board must have some sort Brewster's Millions bet going on. If they successfully trash Sony as a company, they'll get a better one.
I prefer internet also but can't due to job factors.
I work in land development and I'm on construction sites quite a bit. As SOP, the contractor automatically gets temporary power, water and a land line. Internet access just isn't available for construction sites and EVDO access is also hard to get. I'd also have doubts that job supervisors could handle a laptop and internet acces.
So the only way to communicate with these sites are with a land line. Getting faxes from them are the only reason I keep a land line.
You see this libertarian ethos everywhere, but nowhere more clearly than in the technology sector, where the number of union jobs can be counted on one hand.
Low: I think the lack of final price and exact launch date was a bad idea.
Nintendo's probably rethinking their pricing now that Sony has high price of $499 & $599. Some Nintendo analyst is problably figuring out if they add another $50 to the cost of the system.
My gut feeling was that it was going to be $249 but now Nintendo might try for $299.
I would assume that to get credit, Apple would have to know what you're uploading. And you'd probably get credit only for Apple-approved files, not everything you seed, and only to people who legitimately bought the files.
For example, if in a year or so, you're seeding Xmen 3 from iTunes Movie, you'd only upload to people who bought the movie. In terms of RIAA/MPAA/CIA, it should (I know, I'm dreaming) be legal for you to do. Anything else you seed would be worthless in terms of credit.
And if Apple does the stupid move of monitoring all your uploads, then I'm sure some enterprising hacker will find a way around it. Also, I don't think there is any way to stop you from using some other p2p program.
What are the profits in advertising vs the profits from DVD sales?
This might be a usable idea but there might be a point where they decide not to run TV shows at all and make everything straight for DVD. Or worse, the first few episodes in a season will be broadcast, but then to see the end of the season, you'll be force to buy the DVD.
My idea for an ad is a 4 second clip of someone paying with a Visa card, slowed down 8x. That way people fast-forwarding on their TiVo get to see it in real time.
I'm writing your name down...if I end up seeing this on my Tivo, I'll know who to blame.
From TFA: Vista is due to feature hardware-based encryption, called BitLocker Drive Encryption...
The hardware part worries me. Is it just that the hardware is used to speed up the encrypt/decrypt stage? Or is it that disc encryption is actually tied to a specific unique chip on the system?
What happens if my motherboard dies one day and I need to copy files from the dead computer onto a new computer? Will there be a failsafe software-based decoder that will let me copy my files?
And how are backups going to work? It'd be pretty poor security to have an encrypted HD but a decrypted backup.

Also, it'll increase attention and viewership on the women's swimming and conversely decrease viewship on the men's swimming. A good thing, IMO.

Ok, confession time. Who's already masturbating to this article?
Who?
I think it's because Toshiba's only making players.
Sony, on the other hand, seems to be betting the entire company. Sony needs to succeed in selling players, selling PS3s, and selling films.
But knowing Microsoft, it will be 3-4 years before Gates is out the door. And sadly, probably missing some 'features'.
Damn, I've been going to the wrong flea markets....all I ever see a vinyl records, and rusted tools.
While Best Buy is still in the wrong, I think someone did some dumpster diving.
Oh, and gaming consoles. I could save money buying just buying one console but games from everyone.
Ok, I went overboard, but it's fun to imagine.

I'm paying for a land line at home only to send/receives faxes. Being able to use Skype with a fax would be a significant drop in costs for me.
No...it ran NetBSPee.
Wasn't it called the Ferris Bueller Ferrari Effect?
Course, that all depends on where you're located.
Count in binary and you'll get a larger number.

Sheesh. This is slashdot.
Since this is Slashdot, it should be GPS guided missle with a ninja payload.
Why?
Because you can.
