I thought Cameron spent years working on this movie as well, but he actually came up with the story in a very short period of time (which is probably what causes the problems with the shallowness of some of the sci-fi). It's just that he felt the CGI technology wasn't up to scratch at the time (1997, I believe). So he waited until computers and animation tech evolved enough to be able to create his masterpiece.

Oh and Star Wars was not particularly profound either. I was a big Star Wars fan in my highschool years, but if you look at the big picture, it's just another popcorn flick too.

I would've thought porn and prostitution is more important than ever now that there is a massive gender imbalance brewing in China. Way too many girls being aborted in the past, so there is an excess of young men.

As for porn not being allowed because it demeans women, isn't that the basic premise that applies all over the world, universally? Yet porn exists anyway, and is consumed by many who (hypocritically) claim to be protecting women. OK, now that's opening a whole new other can of worms.

Aliens was just another entertaining sci-fi action movie, but it was a fantastically well done one at that. Avatar is an action movie in the same vein. It might not be the deep philosophical kind of movie that makes you ponder difficult questions for days afterwards, but then James Cameron doesn't make those kinds of movies.

I went to see Avatar thinking it was just another mind numbing dumb flick, but it pleasantly surprised me. Definitely 2009 movie of the year.
