Tickets for Waits' summer shows were limited to two per person but, in an effort to beat ticket touts, a valid I.D. (passport or driving licence) matching the name on the ticket was required to gain entry. Any concert-goer who did not have a valid I.D. or was found to be in possession of a ticket that had been resold – electronic scanners were employed – was not allowed in and did not get a refund.

If you RTFA (I know...), you'll note:

The perpetrators took orders from ticket brokers, who were required to provide credit card numbers and account holder names in advance of a purchase so they could be programmed into the bot.

All they would have to do to defeat the ID requirement is add that to the list of items they need to purchase the tickets. And people would still pay extra to them because 1) they wouldn't have to try very hard to get a ticket, and 2) they would have a much higher chance of getting a ticket.

TIE Fighter was such a great game. I think I wasted a year of my life beating it on Hard with all Secondary and Bonus goals.

And then the Windows ME installer overwrote the extended partition with the pilot file... I hate ME.

The other gotcha was the whole system startup area. FreeBSD has you enable the script (chmod 755, rename) *AND* put a variable in /etc/rc.conf. That sometimes messes me up. There are no runlevels in FreeBSD.
I think you're confusing the old and new. Ports are rapidly switching over to rcNG, which only requires setting example_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf to enable. Prior to this, you usually had to copy example.sh.sample to example.sh in /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ and make sure it was executable (chmod 755) to enable.

You try teaching a class with everyone net sending each other...

Leaving the messenger service enabled is like placing loaded water guns on top of each computer and telling the kids not to mess with them. You make some good points and this is clearly a case where the student is being punished for the failings of the school's network administrator. However, I don't think you understand classroom dynamics or fully appreciate the challenge of teaching just the "approved curriculum", much less having an open learning environment where students can explore and learn independently. Turning off the messenger service is one of the many compromises made to keep the teacher sane and the students focused.

As for the trailers on the DVD, it might not be color corrected for the DVD format so it might slightly be different from what you see in the DVD feature it they are the same scene.
They optimized the color for another media. The director of photography of the film was in on it. That's how they wanted it to look.

Considering pH = -log(H+ concentration), a change of 2 ppm (2e-6) is *very* significant. This works out to a change in pH of over 1.3 to ~5.67 (assuming a start at 7), definitely enough to kill amphibians and most fish. However, the pond is most likely buffered by organic processes that would lessen the impact.

I typically can't stand gamers, but I do understand their desire for framerate. The typical PC game has no mechanism for holding a sustained framerate, nor are things like texture preloading handled with any sort of elegance. Most PC games use weak code and brute force to produce any acceptable output. As such, the machine with the highest average framerate is the machine that's the least likely to get into a situation where the framerate will drop below, say, 30 FPS... perhaps in a complex scene or hitting a spot of particularly bad code.

That said, the nitpicking "this 3D accelerator is better because it's 10.2% faster" blurbs are mostly BS.

That "nitpicking" has a nugget of truth to it, however. As you have said average framerate depends on lowest framerate you hit. The highest a card will hit can be limited by the system itself. Therefore, if a card is 10% faster it may mean its lowest framerate is 20% higher. This lowest framerate is noticeable as it is definitely under the refresh rate of your monitor. Also, some people have monitors that can run relatively high refresh rates at high resolution (my old CTX VL710 ran at 110 Hz at 1024x768). Framerates are only really noticeable when they are slow, and a faster graphics card makes a huge impact there.
