  1. NOT NetBIOS, but RPC on Preventing the NT Messenger From Use as a Spam Portal? · · Score: 2, Informative

The Messenger service sends and recieves messages not using the NetBIOS protocol, but RPC. Therefore, you need to block port 135 to stop the messenger.

As many others have said, you could also just turn the service off. I haven't seen anyone mention Black Viper as a resource for explaining what could be shut off and how to do it.

I think it has more to do with the fact that people who are renting a lot are obviously watching more movies.

That's one theory. Another theory would be that these people are "pirates" who rent the movies from Netflix, rip them to MPEG, save them on their hard drives, and share them P2P. Then, they just return the disks and get new ones.

Maybe Netflix is taking some heat from the MPAA and is trying to limit those who go through the media too quickly.

Part of the problem is that /. didn't post this important story to the front page and instead decided other stories were more important. Honestly it blows.

Oh sure, when a story shows up on /. about it, 500 people post to say how outraged they are. But, when there's a forum for actual discussion about how to fix the problem, no one bothers to comment?

Perhaps it's because we've all decided to say "screw it" and just download our music using our favorite P2P software and not bother with streaming webcasts?

  11. Ok, quick free market lesson on Run Your Car on Grease · · Score: 1

People seem to be complaining that vegetable oil costs more than regular diesel fuel. That's probably because there isn't enough supply of, for example, soybeans to process into soybean oil.

Why the "shortage" (at least as it pertains to use as a fuel)? Because soybean prices are terrible, so farmers lean toward producing something they can make more money at (corn, livestock, etc.)

Provided this starts to take off, there could be a higher demand for soy-based oils for fuel sources, thus encouraging more farmers to produce more soybeans, and with more supply to match the demand, pricing would stabilize, if not come down (depending on the amount of increased soybean production).

Note: all of the above could also be applied to corn and the production of Methanol as a fuel additive insted of synthetic chemical additives.

    Emphasis mine:

As far as MySQL goes, I have nothing against it. I grew up on Sybase and Oracle systems, so picking up PostgreSQL was easy as pie. I still haven't had enough motivation or time to pick up MySQL idiosyncracies. And I just don't see a future with MySQL or any other database like I see with PostgreSQL.

This, I think, is the key point. For those who have database experience, PostgreSQL is a fine database product. For those with no previous database experience, the power and terse nature of PostgreSQL is a hinderance.

I think that MySQL has done a better job of making an easy "starter" RDBMS. Is it the best thing on the planet? Probably not. If you start using MySQL and decide you're beating your head against the wall to do some particular thing, should you consider switching to PostgreSQL? Absolutely. Could the PostgreSQL people make it easier to start with? Sure.

About S1M0NE...I just watched this movie last weekend. The problem with completely CG "actors", is that, at some point and time, the computer guy is going to do something stupid that tips people off that they're actually watching a CG "actor", not a human.

In the movie, at the awards show, S1M0NE won an award, and being CG, couldn't be live at the show. So, she appeared via satellite from some 3rd world country where she was doing "Charity work". In the background, there's a "huge" wind storm, and her behavior and hair is perfect (not blowing around, no wind noise in the mic, etc.) The sad thing was that no one in the audience picked up on this.

I think that if Hollywood were to go completely CG, and not tell people, they would screw something up like that and people would catch on. Besides, who wants to mess with an actor's union anyway?

The real benefit is that (at least the way I use it), you start a somewhat long running job in a window in the background (file download, build on a remote system, etc). Bring something you want to work on to the foreground, and set about a 10% transparency to the window. Now, when you want to, you can quickly focus your attention to the background task, without switching windows, then return your attention to what you're working on.

If you have Win2K, or WinXP, vitrite for Windows is a great utility to provide this transparency. And you can select which window and how transparent each window is. Very cool.
